Qantas Delays/Cancellations

B789 VH-ZNB on Monday 6 June was on QF63, the 0935 hours SYD - JNB that took off at 1144, after the aircraft had arrived at 0713 hours (43 late) on QF76 ex also distant YVR. JNB at gate arrival was 1728, 108 minutes late. As a result, the 1735 hours QF64 back to SYD did not become airborne until 1921 last night, so Tuesday 7 arrival is estimated as 1525, two hours late.

At this stage it appears the plane is to form QF7, the 1540 hours SYD - DFW long haul. While this is displaying as a 1630 hours amended pusback, that will be an underestimate as it's most unlikely for this size aircraft to turn around in 65 minutes.

VH-ZNC on QF10 from LHR down to PER should arrive today at 1223 hours, 43 late.

In the opposite direction, VH-ZNH on yesterday's 1850 hours PER - LHR QF9 (the 1850 hours) took off at 1942 so this afternoon Australian time, the aircraft should arrive in LHR at 0538, 33 minutes late.
 
Tuesday's QF2 has been delayed about 11½ hours, and is now due in Sydney at 3:45 pm Thursday. With an A380 operating the QF11/QF12 route 3 times weekly until 17th, freeing up the 789s except on Sundays, there should be no flow on delays.

I had friends on that flight. They were already checked in and through security and waiting in the lounge when they were told by the lounge staff about the delay. They had to go through immigration again, pick up the luggage and were ferried to a hotel with pick up this morning at 0515am. Not the best experience. I wonder what the delay itself was about…

QF2062 BNK-SYD (DH8D VH-QOS) has a delayed arrival at 11 47, 97 min tardy.
QF840 SYD-DRW (A333 VH-QPH) is now scheduled to arrive at 13 55, 95 min late.
QF512 SYD-BNE (B738 VH-VZQ) arrived at 11 26, 51 min behind.
QF922 SYD-CNS (A332 VH-EBG) has a revised arrival at 13 51, 76 min late.
QF1711 CNS-BNE (B712 VH-NXG) has a delayed arrival at 12 15, 60 min behind schedule.
QF773 MEL-PER (A332 VH-EBF) is now scheduled to arrive at 13 14, 94 min tardy.
QF1515 CBR-MEL (B712 VH-NXJ) is running behind and is now arriving at 12 21, 101 min late.
QF11 SYD-LAX has a revised departure at 13 15, 180 min behind.

Tuesday's QF2 eventually arrived in Darwin 11 hrs 40 min (700 min) late. After a further delay, it has just pushed back for it's onwards flight to Sydney, where the revised ETA is 17:10 ( 12 hrs or 720 min late)

QF11 SYD-LAX has a revised departure at 13 15, 180 min behind.

The 'revised departure' for today's QF11 has become 1315 indeed, but tomorrow, Friday 10 June 2022. It is meant to be an A388, as the B789 only seems to be on the route once a week.
 
With SYD experiencing winds and restricted operations, one example late on Thursday 9 June 2022 is QF491, the 1930 hours SYD down to MEL that was airborne at 2152, with arrival for B738 VH-VZV suggested as a likely 122 minutes late at 2307 hours.

The overnight delayed SYD - LAX QF11 has marginally further changed from a proposed 1315 hours departure today (Friday 10 June) to 1300.

UPDATE: On Friday 10, this flight was cancelled.

The Thursday 9 SYD - LAX QF11 was eventually cancelled (see previous post).

VH-OQJ (A388) on Friday's QF11 took off at 1207 hours, arriving at 0911 hours, 131 minutes tardy.

Today, Saturday 11 June, QF11 (the 1015 hours) is deferred until 2125 tonight in pushback, so it should be 670 minutes late if that occurs. Given that QF12 has a 16 hour 55 minutes layover in Los Angeles, tonight's (local LAX time) return flight could in theory punctually depart.

The USA airlines such as DL and UA operating to and from Oz are not always on time, but it's quite rare for them to have two cancellations in the space of three timetabled trips, and an accompanying delay to the third flight.
 
Tonight (Sunday 12 June 2022), QF139 (1925 hours evening MEL - CHC) is delayed until a suggested 2140 in pushback. The SYD - AKL and SYD - WLG flights are also delayed but to a lesser degree.

In the case of the AKL-bound QF149 that took off at 2016 hours, it had been in SYD for some hours, so again, these delays may be due to slow check-in/security screening or insufficient staff available to load baggage (and freight) onto aircraft. Might not help when these three are timetabled to depart almost concurrently.

These evening flights are often delayed at present so if I was a businessman/woman with an 0900 meeting the next morning scheduled in or close to one of these Kiwi cities, I'd travel on an earlier flight if available. This comes at a cost in time but it's better than arriving at one's city centre hotel at 0200 or later and not being fully rested by 0730 when one has to rise.

But VH-ZNK which was supposed to operate QF8 on 14Jun (local date) is now operating QF8D on 15Jun - at least 24hr delay. It’s transponder is now on but remains on the ground

VH-ZNH is also at DFW after operating QF7 arriving afternoon 15Jun (local date). It should be operating the usual QF8 15Jun but does not seem to be live

But I’m calling the Twitter post bull dust because there are numerous hotels around DFW and an Uber to those definitely does not cost $100 - maybe $20-$30

Having seen >$90 Uber Surge pricing before for Sydney CBD to Sydney Airport, I wouldn't put it past Uber if there really was that much demand...

Sounds like the issue is that due to the extensive delay where they thought they could fix the issue, all the contracted ground staff finished their shift and went home. So no one was left to help book hotels, try to call in taxis, etc.

The bigger stuff-up though is that they didn't have anyone ready to help at the time they asked everyone to come back. I would be really angry if I came back after a short night's sleep only for the flight to be further delayed for multiple hours ...

I'm not sure why they would ask passengers to come back the time they did. If my math is correct they can't leave between 4pm and 11pm local time anyway otherwise they'll just hit the Sydney Airport Curfew.

Or maybe it was fixed but things got delayed enough that they ran into the curfew and had to wait until 11pm to depart (although they ended up departing at 1am)

Ive been caught up in several QF delayed/cancelled flights coming back from USA
Ive never waited for the airline to get me a hotel room and a bus ride. Usually situations like this involved queuing for the counter, then queuing for the bus, then queuing at the hotel to be checked in, or in this case waiting for hours...and hours at the airport.

I would book my own, bypassing the airline and getting my own room. Reimbursement from the airline is capped but it sure beats waiting for hours at 1am.

What made the passengers livid was the 9am checkin only to be told airplane is not ready

Qantas completely stuffed up here.

they can't leave between 4pm and 11pm local time anyway otherwise they'll just hit the Sydney Airport Curfew.

Yes they only had a certain window with which to operate the flights. Then add in available departure slots, availability of checkin crew, checkin lanes which are not qantas owned but shared with other airlines)

With ZNK running over 24 hours late, ZNI which has just completed QF10 from LHR & PER, is now about to position MEL to SYD as QF6004 [ETD 19:40 AET] in order to operate a delayed QF75 to Vancouver in place of ZNK.
With Qantas knowing of the delay to ZNK for some hours, why didn't they send ZND to SYD as it has been sitting in Melbourne since late p.m. Tuesday, and thus get QF75 away on time ?
