Qantas Delays/Cancellations

What I find interesting is that neither EK nor QR flights out of SYD seem to be impacted by this chaos. I was on EK413 on Friday night. The check-in process as well as Border Control and Security was a breeze. We were through in less than 20 minutes around 7pm. And EK flew out with a completely sold out A380!
When you look at a two hour period this morning 0900-1100, there were 16 departures.

When you look at the departures between 1900-2100, there are only 7 (8 if you include the EK at 2105).

From the reports, only 6 out of the 17 lines were open due to staff shortages.

Then SYD airport is renovating security at T3 as well, so that isn't helping over there.

As a friend who has more than a million QFF points (not all that unusual these days) said to me 'Qantas flights can often be late'.

In monitoring some (though not every) international flight departing from Sydney in particular but Melbourne to a lesser extent, it's noticeable how poor QFi's punctuality is compared to the likes of SQ, JL, NH, QR and so on.

Yet these other airlines are not based in Oz, so if anything, you'd expect them to be worse, because they may not have the amount of engineering expertise or other staff they'd have at their home base(s).

milehighclub's point about fewer departures in the early evening is valid, provided that aircraft in the morning at the times she mentioned have similar numbers of booked passengers to the early evening flights. However, unfortunately QFi's punctuality problem is not confined to the morning departures, but also evident with flights such as QF103, the 1925 hours SYD - HNL and others. Yesterday, QF139 from SYD to CHC, a B738 due out at 1925 did not take off until 2032, arriving CHC this morning 36 late at 0106 hours.

On Monday 9 May 2022, QF9 (1430 hours MEL - LHR via DRW) took off at 1547 with B789 VH-ZNG, so arrival in DRW should be 71 minutes late at 1921 hours. It may well pick up time en route to LHR as the schedules were given an extra half an hour despite the routing problem being for southeast bound flights ('the 2' and 'the 10') not the northwest bound ones (QF1/QF9).

QF43 today has B738 VH-XZH and is the 1625 hours - note, not a busy time at SYD for departures - from SYD up to DPS that took off at 1732, so expected gate arrival has become 2148 hours, 43 minutes behind.

Tuesday 10 May 2022 finds QF7, the 1540 hours SYD - DFW deferred to depart hopefully at 1700 from SYD in a few minutes' time. Aircraft B789 VH-ZNA had only arrived from JNB this afternoon at 1326 hours (a whole minute late) as QF64, so that together with security screening/bagge handler delays may explain the lateness.

'The 9' from MEL to DRW and then LHR that ought depart at 1430 had also been delayed to 1700 at MEL.

The previous day's QF9 arrived LHR at 0540 hours, 35 minutes late after on Monday 9 having pulled in to its DRW gate at 1915 hours, 65 minutes tardy, showing how with the addition of the extra half hour to schedules, time can be picked up many days on the second sector. Aircraft was B789 VH-ZNG.

This morning's MEL - AKL QF151 (the 0915 hours, B738 VH-VZK) was airborne at 1019 hours, arriving in the North island's major city at 1532 hours, 42 late.

That is a good point. I think that 4 or 5 screening gates were open on Friday night at the Intl Terminal. That is still not a lot given that 8 flights went out and afaik they were all pretty full incl. EK413 which was completely sold out - yet all of these late night departures were pretty much on time on that Friday. So you wonder what happens in the afternoon/early evening when QF is on.

Continuing with Tuesday 10 May, QF9, the 1430 hours MEL - DRW was showing (as noted above) as likely to push back at 1700 hours but didn't become airborne until 1740. Expected arrival in DRW for B789 VH-ZNC is 2108 hours mid evening, 178 minutes late. It may pick up some of that on the way to LHR.

VH-ZNA on 'the 7' (SYD across to DFW) should arrive today 35 late at 0735 hours.

B738 VH-XZF has had a busy day, commencing at 0600 in CHC, then operating to SYD, a return to NAN (arriving back in SYD at 1843 hours, 23 late) and then as QF139 (1925 hours SYD back to CHC) taking off at 2031 with forecast arrival on Wednesday 11 at 0112 hours, 42 minutes late.

QF12 from LAX across to SYD has a fairly good timekeeping record, but its Monday 9 May example of a late night 2255 hours flight with A388 VH-OQK took off at 0025 hours on Tuesday 10. Wednesday 11 at gate arrival looks to be about 0803 hours, 68 minute slate. In turn, QF11 tomorrow morning (1015 hours SYD back to LAX) is showing as an estimated 1050 hours departure.

A388 VH-OQK arrived in SYD as QF12 at 0821 hours on Wednesday 11 May 2022, so departure of the 1015 hours QF11 flight back to LAX was tardy, with takeoff at 1127. Estimated at gate arrival is 33 minutes late at 0733 hours.

'The 19' from SYD to MNL (A333 VH-QPC) is suggested as pushing back 40 minutes late at 1310, in a few minutes.

QF151 (0915 hors morning flight, MEL to CHC, B738 VH-VZX for the second consecutive day) was airborne at 1010 so expected arrival at 1525 will be 35 minutes behind schedule.

QF9 from MEL to DRW/LHR that started on 10 May eventually arrived LHR today (Wednesday 11) at 0716 hours, 131 minutes late.

Tuesday 10's QF12 (2255 hours LAX - SYD) has A388 VH-OQD. It took off at 0056 hours on 11 May so on 12 May should arrive at about 0837 hours, 102 minutes behind the schedule.

On 12 May 2022, QF12 (A388 VH-OQD) on QF11 from SYD to LAX took off at 1146, 91 minutes after timetabled pushback, so likely same day arrival becomes 0735 hours, 35 late. It had arrived in SYD as QF12 at 0824 hours, 89 late.

The 0930 hours SYD - AKL '143' (A333 VH-QPC) was airborne at 1043, arriving in the North island's more northerly harbour city at 1519 hours, 44 behind.

Time-wise, QF69 from MEL to ADL (A332 VH-EBP) had an uneventful run this morning from MEL across to ADL, arriving at 0851 hours, a creditable 14 minutes ahead of schedule. However the second sector due to push back at 1005 saw an extremely lengthy stay, taking off at 1500 with revised DEL arrival at gate suggested as 2241 hours, 281 minutes late. This will delay the 1935 hours DEL - MEL nonstop to at least midnight tonight New Delhi time in pushing back, and so mean MEL likely arrival after 1600 hours on Friday 13 May.

On May 13, 2022 QF1754 (B712 VH-YQX) MEL-MCY arrived at 11 50, 55 min tardy.
QF2363 ROK-BNE (DH8D VH-QOW) left until 11 47 and has a revised arrival at 12 53, 283 min behind.
As @Melburnian1 reported yesterday, QF70 DEL-MEL departed until 00 39 and as such arrival is suggested at 17 03, 273 min late.

Also on Friday 13 May, QF23 (0950 hours SYD up to BKK) has A333 VH-QPE but had an extremely late takeoff at 1224 hours, so suggested arrival has become 1821 hours, 101 minutes late. This is after the normal 1810 hours pushback for QF24 back to SYD. QPE had only been 13 minutes late this morning arriving in SYD as QF24 at 0643, so perhaps the delay was due to staffing (lack thereof).

B789 VH-ZNC tonight is predicted to depart DRW 35 late at 2145 hours mid evening.

QF9 (mid afternoon MEL - DRW - LHR, B789 VH-ZNG, the 1430 hours) took off at 1604 so DRW arrival should be 1932 hours, 104 minutes behind schedule, making an on time arrival in LHR tomorrow at 0505 hours most unlikely.

UPDATE: the aircraft was in DRW from 1925 hours until takeoff at 2158, with Sunday 15 LHR arrival estimated as 0627 hours, 82 minutes late.

On Saturday 14 May, QF69 arrived DEL at 1822 hours, 22 late with A332 VH-EBP.

However the returning QF70 (the 1935 hours) was not airborne until 2126, so Sunday 15 MEL at gate arrival; should be 1344, 74 late.

Also on Saturday 14 May 2022, QF2 (mid evening 2105 hours LHR to DRW) was not airborne until 2247 hours so Sunday 15 estimated at gate arrival becomes 2354, 84 minutes late, meaning arrival in SYD will be at 0600 or later on Monday 16, rather than that horrible 0510 hours that the timetable states. Breakfast at 0300 AEST: no thank you.

A333 VH-QPE is on QF143, perhaps the short haul QFi flight with the worst record for punctuality.

On Monday 16 May, this 0930 hours flight took off at 1041 hours so a 1512 hours arrival (37 minutes tardy) is suggested. QPE had arrived in SYD this morning three minutes early at 0627 as QF24 ex BKK, so perhaps more security screening or baggage delays as NZ102 across the Tasman is also delayed.

A388 VH-OQD on QF11, the 1015 hours SYD - LAX was airborne at 1139 so its at gate arrival should be (same day) at 0741, 41 late.

The SYD - NLK QF179 is a far smaller aircraft in the shape of B738 VH-XZH but this 1030 hours flight was similarly delayed in pushback, so takeoff at 1149 means arrival is set to be at 1459 local time, 49 late.

A333 VH-QPI had most of 10 May, and all of 11 and 12 May, off before a series of freight flights MEL-BNE-CNS-HKG-CNS-MEL. It then had Sunday 15 May off, while this monring it was on passenger duties with QF438, the 0800 hours MEL - SYD that arrived at gate at 0943, 18 late. It then formed QF19 (1230 hours lunchtime SYD - MNL) but did not take off until 1340 so a 52 minute late arrival at 1942 is likely.

This will delay the 2035 hours return redeye QF20 back down to SYD.

In post #12949 above, a severe delay to QF69 was noted on 12 May's second sector (ADL - DEL).

Today (Monday 16), a similar problem has occured, although the A332 (VH-EBO) is not the same one. This morning, it arrived ADL three minutes early at 0902 but the second sector, scheduled as a 1005 hours pushback did not result in takeoff until mid afternoon at 1455. DEL arrival should be at about 2232 hours, 272 minutes late.

Again, the 1935 hours DEL to MEL nonstop QF70 will be badly delayed.

VH-XZG is on QF139 the B738 from SYD to CHC due out at 1925 hours. Tonight it took off at 2039 hours so Tuesday 17 arrival looks to be 0116 hours, 46 late.

Continuing with Monday 16 May, the above QF139 from SYD to CHC (B738 VH-XZG) had to divert to AKL.

The B738 then operated from AKL down to CHC, still as QF139, taking off at the unseemly hour of 0747 hours (although it looks as if it was meant to push back at 0300 hours), and arriving CHC at 0859 hours. It is now operating QF138, the 0600 early morning CHC - SYD that was airborne at 1030. Expected arrival is 1136 hours, 241 minutes late.

A333 VH-QPI on QF20 from MNL arrived SYD at 0717, 47 late, and is forming a delayed QF143 from SYD to AKL.

Monday's QF69 arrived DEL at 2241, 281 minutes late with A332 VH-EBO's QF70 (the 1935 hours) airborne at 0102 hours on Tuesday 17. Anticipated MEL at gate arrival becomes 1718 late this afternoon, 288 minutes behind schedule.

Today's 0815 hours QF69 from MEL to ADL is not expected to depart until 1230 hours, with the second leg from ADL to DEL a likely starter at about 1410 hours SA time. Again, QF70 back to MEL overnight will be badly delayed.

B789 VH-ZNB is on QF63 that has become an 0850 hours SYD - JNB. It took off at 0948 so at gate arrival is suggested this afternoon at 1539 hours, 44 minutes tardy.

B789 VH-VNJ, the 1430 hours MEL - DRW - LHR (QF9) took off at 1524 on Tuesday 17 May so arrival at DRW should be at 1853 hours, 48 late.

Although 'the 69' (MEL - ADL) was meant to depart at 1230 today, it took off at an extremely late 1424 hours with A332 VH-EBP, arriving ADL at 1503 mid afternoon, 358 minute slate. As at 1630, it had not taken off for DEL.

Wednesday 18 May has seen QF63 (0930 hours SYD - JNB, B789 VH-ZNK) take off at 1012 hours. Forecast at gate arrival becomes 1618 hours, 43 minutes late.

VH-ZNJ on QF9 ex MEL/DRW arrived LHR this morning at 0552, 47 minutes behind the timetable.
