Qantas Delays/Cancellations

A friend on QF9 MEL-LHR tonight, 6 March received an SMS saying flight cancelled. No indication on the website flight status page. Any insight?

UPDATE: It seems as if this flight did operate. Maybe my friend misinterpreted the “Your flight has been changed....” text to “Your flight has been cancelled.” They were originating in BNE and have been allocated to tonight’s EK flight out of there.

Anyone got access to the loads on QF9?

FR24 claims it took off from MEL at 1919 hours with B789 VH-ZNI and has just commened to track above South Australian airspace, being estimated to arrive at the DRW gate at 2136 local time, 11 minutes late. The QF website 'flight status' suggests this is correct.

"Your" QF9 is suggested as arriving LHR at 0733, 43 minutes late even though last night it was up up and away from DRW at 2303, about 10-15 minutes early as pushback was scheduled for 2255 hours.

QF1 (operated by ZNJ) arrived LHR at 0542, 37 late.

From today, QF1, previously 1645 ex SYD, has been slowed by half an hour on the first sector, with SYD pushback now 1615 hours.

Given the amount of 787 flying, I imagine it will only cause a disruption to the QF10 on the return. They will be able to pull another aircraft to prevent further disruption that wouldn't normally happen if all aircraft were flying.

On various days starting sometime this week, QF2 and QF10 between LHR and DRW have been given an extra half an hour. Consequently they are timetabled into SYD/MEL 30 minutes later.

This was something I raised in another AFF thread, not that such musings are ever read by QF staff.

On Monday 7 March 2022, QF1 (VH-ZNC) took off from SYD at 1629, arriving DRW 49 minutes early at 1851 hours. However the changed 2040 hours second sector (it used to be 2110) did not see take off until 2338 hours, so LHR arrival on Tuesday 8 became 0810 hours, 185 minutes late.

The aircraft turned around quite quickly and has not long taken off at 1029 hours, only about 10-15 minutes late for the trip back down to DRW and on to SYD.

Sitting in the F lounge at SYD on 2/3 I saw a QF 787 doing domestic flights and pulling in to T3, so I imagine they are not short of these aircraft to fill a gap.

On Wednesday 9 March 2022, QF1, the retimed by half an hour to give extra schedule time 1615 hours SYD to DRW did not take off until 1951 with VH-ZNA, arriving at 2234 hours, 204 minutes late. This aircraft had sat unused in Sydney since arriving on QF76 from YVR at 0614 hours on Sunday 7.

It then took off on the 2040 hours DRW - LHR at 0023 today (Thursday 10) so arrival close to 'The City' should be at 0754, 169 minutes behind the schedule.

UPDATE: QF1 did not arrive LHR until 0838 hours, 213 minutes behind the timetable.

Also on Wednesday 9 March, QF9 (VH-ZNJ) took off from MEL at 1841, 26 minutes after the retimed (slowed) scheduled pushback, with DRW arrival becoming 2156, 61 minutes tardy. The second sector was airborne at 2332, arriving LHR on Thursday 10 at 0744, 54 minutes late, and notably unusually ahead of QF1 (see above).

Given the small size of the DRW lounge, it would have been challenging to have two groups of eligible passengers concurrently present.

QF8 (9 March, the 2020 hours mid evening DFW - SYD) was in the sky at 2147 with B789 VH-ZNK, so SYD arrival on Friday 11 should be at about 0735 hours, 90 minutes tardy.

The SYD - JNB flights have all been punctual or close to that when occasionally monitored, but the 9 March one with VH-ZNI (the 1015 hours) took off at 1207, arriving in the South African major city at 1632, 77 minutes behind its timing. Returning, the 1715 hours scheduled pushback became takeoff at 1822 hours, arriving SYD today (10 March) at 1446 hours, 46 minutes late.

Thursday 10 March 2022 also had QF68, the 1755 hours DEL - SYD taking off at 1843 hours with A332 VH-EBO. On Friday 11, arrival is suggested as 1230 hours, 40 late.

Also on Thursday, QF75 (2010 hours mid evening SYD up to YVR, B789 VH-ZNH) was in the sky at 2232 (much later than its suggested delay until '2100' in pushback) so same day arrival should be at approximately 1704, 124 minutes behind schedule. It is unusual for this flight to be delayed, but this aircraft had come off QF2 that arrived SYD at 1913, eight minutes late, so a 2010 pushback was impossible. Perhaps another B789 had failed so ZNH was substituted.

Since QF1 (re)commenced (albeit via DRW), it's generally been punctual leaving SYD.

Sunday 13 March 2022 is an exception, with the retimed, slowed 1615 hours departure turning into an 1806 hours 'up up and away' for B789 VH-ZND. DRW arrival should be 2040 hours, an hour behind, making it challenging to arrive LHR tomorrow on time.

UPDATE: This flight arrived DRW at 2049 hours, 69 minutes late. The scheduled 2040 hours second sector then took off at 2249, so time on the ground exceeded the timetabled allowance, with the result that on Monday 14, LHR arrival is suggested as 0607, 62 minutes tardy.

Also on Sunday 13 March, QF9 (1815 hours MEL - DRW, B789 VH-ZNB) was in the sky at 1854, arriving at 2204, 69 minutes late.

Something may have gone wrong with the aircraft, or there's been a crewing problem, as instead of departing last night for London, the aircraft and passengers are staying overnight, with the plane due to depart for LHR at 1300 today DRW time (755 minutes late).

LHR suggested arrival has become 2125 on Monday 14 instead of the normal 0650 hours.

This will mean at least a 12 hour delay to QF10 but the QF flight status page is yet to reveal arrangements.

While I don't check every day, it may well be the first time since resumption that QF9 has had an 'intermediate stop' failure requiring passengers (and crew) to be accommodated overnight in Darwin hotels. The latter loves such occurrences (assuming they have spare rooms).

Thank goodness this didn't occur on a night when 'The Ghan' train has arrived earlier that day, as it can mean pressure on Darwin hotels.

Maybe due to curfew at LHR, the overnight delayed QF9 (ex MEL on Sunday 13 March) has been delayed further in DRW.

Instead of departing at 1300 local time today from this RAAF airport, which became '1400', it's been further put back to leave at 2230 late this evening,m with arrival at LHR estimated as 0655 hours on Tuesday 15, 1445 minutes tardy.
