Qantas Delays/Cancellations

In more on a thundery 22 November 2019 evening in SYD, QF571 (A332 VH-EBJ), the 1740 hours SYD across to PER was not airborne until 1912. Consequent delayed arrival is 2048 hours, 73 behind.

QF164, the diverted WLG - SYD (to CBR) upon which Silvia reported above took off from the national capital at 1936 on 22 November for projected SYD arrival at 2032 hours, 172 minutes behind schedule.

QF451 SYD-MEL (B738 VH-VYG) is expected at 19 52, 62 behind.
QF459 SYD-MEL (A332 VH-EBE) has a revised arrval at 20 30, 55 min tardy.
QF474 MEL-SYD (B738 VH-VXE) is suggested to arrive at 20 47, 67 min behind schedule.
QF164 CBR-SYD (B738 VH-XZC) has a late arrival at 20 32, 52 min late.

Following cancellations
QF453 SYD-MEL 17 00 hours
QF2085 MQL-MEL 17 25 hours
QF477 SYD-MEL 18 15 hours
QF463 SYD-MEL 18 30 hours
QF464 MEL-SYD 19 30 hours

Due to earlier delays, SYD remained extremely busy as at 2220 hours late evening on Friday 22 November, with B738 VH-VZS on QF843 from Bne down to SYD, the 1855 hours airborne at 2041 likely to be at its aerobridge at 2251, 81 late.

Meanwhile from the south, QF566 (A332 VH-EBN) should arrive on its lengthy PER across to SYD journey at 2255, 25 late and not normally a delay I would include, but in this case it's sailing close to the 2300 hours curfew.

AFFer jeza is hopefully relaxing on board and not on tenterhooks as his QF583, the 1955 hours SYD across to PER is "expected" to push back at 2240 hours for arrival in the West's capital at a suggested 0040 hours on Saturday 23, 170 minutes behind schedule. The current Federal government seems to have a pretty relaxed attitude to granting dispensations to the curfew, with as one of our aviators said the key being granting of taxiing by 2245 hours. However given jeza was not so long ago suggesting above boarding rather earlier, the additional delay is not a good sign.

QF553 (VH-VYC, the 1835 hours BNE - SYD) was in the sky at 2049 so arrival has become 2306, 116 late and with landing suggested at 2301 hours, a technical breach of the curfew.

The 1730 hours SYD down to MEL, QF455, took off at 2244 so B738 VH-VXL will be 00 minutes late when it arrives at 0005 hours on Saturday 23 in the southern capital.

It would have been far quicker for passengers on QF1525, the 1845 hours SYD - CBR to travel by NSW TrainLink train on 22 November as B717 VH-NXQ was, as at 2250, still taxiing in SYD, making it almost four hours late.

Given the travails of the diverted QF164 from WLG to SYD, it isn't a surprise that QF163, the early evening 1840 hours SYD - WLG is instead to depart at 0845 hours on Saturday 23 November, allowing the crew sufficient mandated rest.

As an update, QF580 got diverted to MEL before making it to SYD. Have boarded QF583 and currently waiting to push back.

A332 VH-EBK departed at 2253 hours.

QF497 (normally the last of the evening at 2205 hours from SYD down to MEL) had not taken off by 2303 hours. Aircraft is B738 VH-VZK.

VH-XXP on QF554, the 2000 hours SYD north to BNE had similarly yet to become aiborne.

QF117, the 2220 hours SYD up to HKG (A332 VH-EBO) departed at 2309 hours, so it presumably has a Ministerial delegate's dispensation, but had not taken off by 2317 hours.

Update: jeza's QF583 was airborne at 2320 hours.

The 2000 hours SYD up to BNE, QF554, pointed skywards at 2328 hours.

QF497 pointed skywards at 2332 hours with VH-VZK.

On Saturday 23 November 2019, QF485, the 0935 hours from MEL to PER is expected to depart 61 late at 1036.

Occasionally one sees this 'to the minute' expected departure time that is an ATC 'controlled departure.' However in practice the airlines are rarely able to adhere to this level of accuracy, which contrasts with the Australian tradition of usually timing arrivals and departures in five minute increments.

Yesterday there were Tasmanian cancellations. This morning, QF2051, the 1005 hours MEL - DPO has also received the 'Prince Andrew boot.'

The A388 operating the long distance QF93 (1040 hours MEL - LAX) should depart at 1200 'high noon.' This will usually mean a missed connection with the 0820 hours same day LAX to JFK B789, with connectees instead being placed on AA flights across the LOTF. QF36 (A388 VH-OQB) arrived in MEL this morning at 0617, 17 late ex SIN while QF94 (VH-OQC) is only an expected 11 minutes late (1001) into MEL at gate, so not sure why the delay.

UPDATE: QF485 (B738 VH-VZD) was off blocks at 1047 hours in MEL, 72 minutes behind schedule with PER arrival at gate likely at 1143, 63 behind. Given yesterday's adverse MEL weather, this B738 must be taking the place of another as it was on QF415, the 0800 hours SYD - MEL that arrived eight early at 0927 hours. It is not normal for a scheduled 0935 hours arrival to form an 0935 hours departure.

FURTHER UPDATE: QF93 departed MEL at 1213 hours, taking off at 1231 with VH-OQB. Arrival should be at 0730 hours same day, 80 minutes late, and probably still causing a smallish delay to QF11 (0820 hours across to JFK) if the latter is held.

Continuing with Saturday 23 November, QF79, the 0920 hours morning MEL - NRT pushed back 54 late, so anticipated at gate arrival is 1831 in the early evening, 51 behind. A333 VH-QPE has the honours and had arrived from NRT as QF80 at 0803 hours, only eight late, so no obvious reason for the delay.

QF4 (1000 hours morning HNL - SYD departing on Friday 22) did so at 1109 so Saturday 23 anticipated SYD arrival has become 1821, 46 minutes tardy. VH-QPG is the A333. Its three previous flights were all more than 75 minutes late arriving (QF3 ex SYD, and before that QF143/QF146 SYD - AKL and return.)

A333 VH-QPJ on QF81, the 1125 hours SYD - SIN was airborne at 1223 so arrival is pushed back to an expected 1733 in the late afternoon local time, 48 minutes late.

Also on 23 November 2019, B744 VH-OEH is operating QF6620, an empty working that given the Antarctica charter tomorrow (24 November) may be heading for ADL. Takeoff was at 1230 hours.

UPDATE: This was either a test flight or scenic charter, as it landed in SYD at 1324 hours.

The B744 then operated QF743, the 1840 hours SYD across to ADL departing at 1909 and airborne at 1925. Arrival should be at 2045 hours, half an hour behind.

It had displayed earlier as 'punctual', but the 23 November QF7 (1440 hours SYD - DFW long flight) did not push back until 1648 so arrival, same day, is estimated as 1454 hours, 119 minutes tardy. The A388 is VH-IQE.

Earlier, QF35 (1210 hours MEL - SIN, VH-OQC) took off at 1253 with suggested at gate arrival 1740, 35 down.

The 1720 hours MEL up to SIN, QF37, departed 23 late with at gate arrival likely at 2245, half an hour behind.

QF3 is expected to depart 70 minutes late at 2030 from SYD to HNL, arriivng - same day - at 0925 hours, also 70 late. This may marginally delay the returning QF4.

While showing earlier as expected to be on time, QF79, the Sunday 24 November 0920 hours MEL - NRT has beaen delayed to a projected 1100 hours pushback, suggesting arrival at 1905 tonight, 85 late. Either QF80 - 1920 hours scheduled evening redeye ex NRT to MEL - or QF62, the 1930 hours to BNE will be tardy as a result.

QF4 (HNL down to SYD) is arriving on Sunday 24 at 1901 hours, 86 minutes behind schedule due to the tardy departure from SYD yesterday of QF3.

The 1110 hours SYD - LAX, QF11 (A388-operated) is often punctual or close to it but Sunday 24's 1205 hours departure means estimated same day arrival at 0645, 45 minutes late.
