Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Could the amazing milehighclub please let us know what went on with 'the 93' (to use the occasional almost personalised, delightful descriptor of one frequent contributor) on Friday 23 February. See serfty and jb747 brief comments above.

The 2115 QF118 HKG-SYD service on 20 Feb did not depart HKG until 0855 today, 21 Feb. Anyone know why this flight was delayed for 11 hours?
Not 100% certain but it could have been crew related. The 744 was subbed in late due to the A380 being delayed back into SYD due to a diversion and delay on the DFW route. QF has no 744 operations into HKG at the moment so crew may not have been available.

Not a major flight and forgot to post on Friday but QF2085 MQL-MEL went tech after we all boarded and then diembarked. After a little bit of chaos we were eventually all put up in a hotel for the night and told we would be placed on of 2 flights the next day. Either QF2077 departing 0700 (assuming QF2086 arrived from MEL late in the evening) or QF2079 dep 1020 (assuming the plan that went tech was cleared by an engineer flying up on 2086, again assuming it made it up).

One thing that disappointed me was that there was no communication from QF at all about which flight I was placed on nor any communication about transport back to the airport despite assurances to the contrary when we left the airport to go to the hotel. I was placed on 2077 and thank goodness I set an alarm to wake early and checked the app. I wasn’t the only one. Given there were 40 of us if shouldn’t have been that difficult to call each of us. All the taxis had already left for the airport and calling one back meant I would have missed check in. Thank goodness another passenger had a hire car and was kind enough to offer a lift.

Things that were done well: they managed to sort a place for all of us relatively quickly (about 40mins). And as I was not supposed to stay that night, given an overnight pack containing pj’s and toiletries. Also included was a $30 meal voucher for the hotel restaurants (but as almost all mains were over $30 we had to cover the difference). At least it was a decent meal.

Anyway some things done well and some done poorly by QF.

I moved forward to QF459: we've developed a mechanical problem and are taxiing back to a gate. Have no idea how long it will take to get a gate or repair the problem.

Would've been better of staying on my 1900 flight.

Continuing with the Sunday 25 February SYD wet weather (it was a drizzle only earlier in the day), long haul QF28 from SCL to SYD (BB744 VH-OEB) is arriving at about 1910, 90 minutes late.

Both the Qantas website and Google claim that HVR's QF459 departed only five minutes late at 1805 hours. Given our man on the spot's above excellent report, this must be erroneous. QF suggests arrival in MEL will only be 18 minutes late.

Wouldn’t suggest people fly with me on Qantas... I do my best to avoid them. Last time was on the QF64 that diverted to Canberra. I’m due on QF24 tonight and it looks to be running many hours late. Qantas in their competence has not bothered to inform us.

My 7:15pm QF493 last night SYD-MEL was going to depart 7:30pm until they decided to use the inbound QF545 from BNE aircraft for the 7pm QF465 service instead. As it turned out the was an ill passenger on the flight from BNE and QF565 did not depart until 8pm, getting in 45 minutes late at 823pm.

My QF493 eventually departed 8:15pm arriving just two minutes after QF465.

My understanding is that the 787 is being used on about half of the 93/94 at the moment to get the crews some experience in the aircraft.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how QF9/10 go from Perth in an operational sense, e.g. payload, fuel etc - this thread should be even more interesting once it starts.

It must be quite the time for the UK-based cabin crew. I imagine they are relatively excited about going somewhere (a) other than DXB and (b) having the chance of actually going to Australia (I assume the London cabin base will be used). Although that does mean back to long haul I guess.

Are London based crew operating to LHR-PER and return?

I have no idea, I just assumed. But you wouldn't need many if you're down to 1 x A380 a day being served by that base. It might make sense given you don't want to run out of crew so far away and they are there anyway? Equally though it does mean that it's a direct flight, and a single trip is not as big an exercise as stopping in an intermediate point for a day each way. e.g. SYD-DXB//DXB-LHR//LHR-DXB//DXB-SYD. It's simply PER-LHR//LHR-PER.

Disruption on the DRW-ASP route today with the early morning southbound QF1937 initially given a 4 hour delay before being cancelled, along with the reciprocal afternoon northbound QF1938. Reason unknown although the allocated 717 appeared to be having an engine run ahead of the scheduled departure time this morning.
