Qantas Delays/Cancellations

QF931 is now supposedly departing at 1340 this afternoon from CNS with estimated SYD arrival being 1635 hours instead of the timetabled 0855.

Which means that we're now leaving AFTER the 1305 QF925 CNS-SYD (only delayed 20 minutes at this stage, ETD 1325).

Departure of QF709 CNS-BNE also delayed from 1005 to 1400. Things unusually busy for a Saturday here in the CNS lounge.

Continuing with Saturday 8 July, QF1544 (1130 hours CBR - BNE, B717 VH-NXR) took off at 1221; arrival should be at 1403, 47 minutes late.

Ramifications of the Friday 7 July mid evening BNE fog remain severe for passengers:

The Saturday 8 July QF97 from BNE to HKG departed 27 late at 1117 hours with tonight's arrival suggested as half an hour late at 1830 hours.

.,,Departure of QF709 CNS-BNE also delayed from 1005 to 1400. Things unusually busy for a Saturday here in the CNS lounge.

QF709 (B738 VH-VZU) took off even later than predicted, at 1508 hours mid afternoon meaning a likely 51 minute late arrival at 1656 hours down in BNE on Saturday 8 July 2017.

B744 VH-OEF on Friday 7 July departed JFK at 1934 hours, 84 minutes late but it was not until 2205 that it took off. The airport had warned about 'weather conditions' and claified this by stating that 'thunderstorms' were causing the delays with an average arrival delay of a significant two hours and 44 minutes. It has been quite warm at times, up to 32 degrees. LAX arrival is estimated as 0015 on Saturday 8 July rather than the scheduled 2100 hours, so it will be 195 minutes late. This is a long time to sit in a plane on the tarmac at JFK.

The A388 operating QF12 was not held: it departed at 2248, 18 late. QF94 to MEL was also allowed to depart without a connection being made: it left 17 late at 2227 hours, but QF96 (see below) was operating.

The LAX - BNE QF16 B744 is estimated to depart at 0225 hours on Saturday 8 (185 late) with Sunday 9 July arrival likely at 0900 hours, 170 late. This probably means QF15 on Sunday (BNE - LAX) will be delayed.

On Sunday 9 July, QF23 (0950 hours SYD - BKK) is again late with A333 VH-QPC becoming airborne at 1104 hours. Arrival is suggested as 1755 hours in the very late afternoon local time, 75 minutes late, meaning that QF24 will be late departing for the redeye trip back down to SYD.

The B744 operating occasional flight QF96 arrived ex LAX in MEL this morning at about 0920, almost two hours late.

Although QF129 only departed SYD a minute late at 0936 hours for its flight to PVG, arrival is estimated to be 35 late at 1905 this evening.

A388 VH-OQC on QF11 (0950 hours SYD - LAX) departed at 1107 and took off at about 1135, meaning likely arrival at 0730, an hour late and probably leading to a delay for the different aircraft (B744) operating the USA transcontinental QF11 across to JFK.

QF15 (B744), the 1020 BNE - LAX departed at 1051 with arrival forecast as 0635, 35 minutes tardy.

The school holiday extra QF95 (B744) from MEL to LAX has been delayed by an expected hour in its departure from 1150 to 1250.

QF7 is often punctual but on Sunday 9 its normal 1230 departure has been delayed until a very late 2100 hours this evening. Arrival is expected to be 2100 as well, same day in DFW. Although not yet showing on the QF website, QF8, the Sunday 9 July 2215 hours DFW - SYD will be delayed until at least 2245 in its departure, and will be more badly affected timewise of QF7 is more greatly delayed than QF claims.

Capping off a bad day during the busy school holidays for QFi, QF73 from SYD to SFO is expected to depart at 1655 this afternoon rather than 1300 hours, meaning arrival at 1300 hours same day, 210 minutes late. It is being formed by the scheduled 1455 hours arrival from JNB, QF64 which is running about 10 minutes early into SYD.

Continuing with Sunday 9 July, QF144 (unusually B744 VH-OJT, the 1315 hours AKL - SYD that did not become airborne until 1440 hours) is arriving at 1550, an hour behind the timetable. The flight prior was QF141 (SYD - AKL) this morning with arrival early at about 1100. It was not even used yesterday (Saturday 8.)

QF108, the Saturday 8 July 2345 hours late night redeye from PEK down to SYD has been delayed in its departure overnight to a predicted 1635 hours (1835 AEST) today. Instead of arriving at 1320 hours on Sunday 9 July, it should arrive at 0610 hours on Monday 10 July. A332 VH-EBL is the aircraft.

As always it's a bit more complicated than that. In this instance, the 94 lost passengers that were on the flight from JFK. So, all passengers that had arrived early and could be moved were moved from the 96 to the 94, thus opening up space on the 96 for the displaced JFK people. Overall, the passenger loading increased on the 94 by about 10%.

Even with a slightly late departure, and a REDUCTION in the cruise speed, the 94 arrived in Melbourne pretty much on time. In fact a final couple of minutes were lost because Virgin had left cargo loaders from an adjacent 330 within the cleared areas for the 380's bay.

B744 VH-OEG on QF73, the delayed 1300 hours SYD - SFO departed at 1718 on Sunday 9 July, meaning likely arrival at about 1325, 235 minutes late.

A388 VH-OQE on QF1, the 1550 hours SYD up to LHR via DXB took off at 1733 hours, so DXB arrival is predicted as 0130 hours, 65 minutes tardy.

Interesting, and a trifle surprising, because being school holidays, I'd have thought that on this very popular route (albeit one on which competition has recently increased with VA, for one, running nonstop flights MEL - LAX - MEL), both flights (QF94 A388 and QF96 B744) would have been booked out (save, in practice, for the 'no shows' that are an inevitable component of international flights.)

Don’t read too much into it. The initial loading that I saw most likely excluded the 12’s passengers. It is very rare for the 94 to have any spare weight available.

The typically thrice weekly QF37 from MEL to SIN (due to depart at 1540 hours) has been delayed until an expected 2030 hours. Arrival is predicted at 0235 (Monday 10 July) instead of Sunday 9 at 2150. QF38 is forecast to depart from SIN at the unattractive time for passengers and staff of 0350 hours with MEL arrival suggested tomorrow at 1320 rather than 0930.

Apologies for not picking this up earlier, but Friday 7 July's QF8 was delayed overnight in DFW and did not depart until 0804 hours on Saturday 8, resulting in arrival this afternoon (Sunday 9 July) at 1533 hours in SYD, 568 minutes late. Aircraft was A388 VH-OQB that one assumes is operating the delayed QF7 tonight that has been rescheduled to a 2100 hours departure.

UPDATE: QF37 (A332 VH-EBB, which had arrived in MEL at about 1832 - more or less on time - on QF778 ex PER) was airborne at 2114 hours and so should arrive in SIN at around 0305 hours on Monday 10 July, delaying the poor folk waiting in SIN for QF38 even longer. What a shocking time of the night to have to wait around, lounge access or not.

Amusingly, FR24 shows VH-EBB as rostered to operate QF408, the 0700 hours early morning MEL to SYD on Monday 10 July, a flight that we can fairly safely suggest will be operated by another aircraft if it still runs.

QF3 (1930 hours evening SYD up to HNL, A332 VH-QPA departed at 2128 and took off at 2147 hours; arrival is predicted at about 1045, 85 minutes late. As QF4 same day ex HNL is timetabled to depart at 1100, it will be at least an hour and a bit late departing.

The delayed QF7 departed from SYD at 2122 with A388 VH-OQB. It has been further amended with a 2120 hours estimated arrival, so the projected delay to Sunday 10 July's QF8 departure from DFW will increase a little more.

The delayed QF37 landed at SIN at 0251 on Monday 10 July so arrival at the gate will be a few minutes later. QF38 is showing as departing at 0410 - minimum turnaround for an A332 - with suggested arrival in MEL at 1335, 245 minutes late.

A332 VH-EBO on QF42, the CGK - SYD redeye should arrive at roughly 0644 hours, 39 minutes behind schedule.

Sunday 9 July's QF11 departed LAX 67 minutes late at 0927 hours, arriving JFK 66 minutes behind schedule at 1746. While QF12 is showing as delayed an hour from JFK (until 1910 hours), a few minutes after that it had yet to depart.

In further on Monday 10 July, QF129 (0935 hours morning flight from SYD up to PVG) departed at 1000 with arrival delayed until an expected 1930 tonight, an even hour behind schedule.

QF127 (which over the school holidays continues to be an A388, in this case VH-OQJ) departed 25 minutes late at 1025 and took off at 1055 hours but arrival will be a predicted 40 minutes behind at 1800.

QF81 from SYD to SIN (A332 VH-EBO) departed only 13 minutes late at 1038, but did not take off until 1118. It is not predicted to be in the Lion City until 1800 hours, 70 minutes late.

Sunday 9 July's QF1 that departed from SYD 83 minutes late at 1713 hours stopped in DXB from 0120 hours to 0259 with expected LHR 10 July arrival at 0730, 35 minutes late.

Why the reduction in cruise speed? Is that due to the increased load?

Why the reduction in cruise speed? Is that due to the increased load?

An increased load would actually increase the target speed very slightly.

A couple of reasons:
1. About half of the extra load appeared after completion of refuelling. Extra people means extra weight, and that leads to greater fuel burn. I had already loaded an additional couple of tonnes of fuel, which was basically absorbed by the transferred passengers. If I wanted to go back to my original arrival fuel figure, then I'd have had to recall the refueller. That would have taken about 15 minutes. But, as the total loading was now within about a tonne below max take off weight, I couldn't get back to the original anyway. The load I had was adequate, so I decided to go with it, and save the time.
2. Even with a slight delay off blocks, the eta was ahead of schedule. But, by slowing (only very slightly), I was able to recover some fuel. Ultimately that disappeared again, when the final winds were more adverse than planned, but by trying to save it early on, I had it to lose when the winds appeared.

Continuing with Monday 10 July, QF5 departed SYD 23 late at 1613, becoming airborne quite promptly at 1626. SIN arrival is estimated as 2245, half an hour tardy. Aircraft is A332 VH-EBG.

The delayed Sunday 9 QF8 did not commence pushback in DFW until 2350 hours, 95 minutes behind the timetable. Tuesday 11 arrival in SYD is suggested as 0730 hours, 85 minutes late.

I am travelling QF7 tomorrow Tuesday and am hopeful we get away on time as I only have 90 minutes to clear immigration and deposit bags to catch flight to Minneapolis.

While there are no certainties, holrs514 and you could be unlucky (such as repairs on an A388 being suddenly required, delaying departure), the good news is that the delay to QF8 that arrives tomorrow morning (Tuesday 11 July) should not of itself affect any QF A388 departures.

The bad news is that if something goes wrong, from looking at timetables after the departure from DFW at a scheduled 1435 hours for AA1348, the remaining two AA flights from DFW to MSP are timetabled to depart at 1835 and 2030 hours, so they are not evenly spaced and you would potentially face a lengthy wait.

Be assured that QF7 typically has a better timekeeping record than the Oz - LAX A388 or B744 QF flights, although if anything the worst performers tend to be the westbounds back to Oz, in no small part due to the connecting JFK - LAX QF12 that to put it nicely has a variable timekeeping record. QF8 is unaffected by all that, so again it is quite unusual for it to arrive significantly late. Frequent QF users may be aware of this with the other factor being a desire of some to avoid LAX (although my most recent experience last year was very pleasant: I found it efficient and even the immigration officer could not have been more courteous.)

QF448, the 1645 hours Monday 10 July MEL - SYD has been cancelled.
