Qantas Delays/Cancellations

QF98, the 1905 hours HKG - BNE redeye on Friday 22 February will instead depart at 0700 on Saturday 23 for arrival at a predicted 1745 in the arvo rather than 0555 in the morning, so 590 minutes late.

QF10 PER-MEL departed at 3.45pm 90 minutes late on Friday 22nd. There where two reasons for this the first being that the seats from row 46 back had been blocked due to the evacuation slides being inoperable so no passengers allowed. Second was due to having 2 dogs on board, that had come from London, in the cargo hold, they were having trouble maintaining temperature in the forward cargo hold so needed to transfer the dogs to a second cargo area however this then gave them an issue due to Quarantine that took some time to resolve.

The Captain did a great job of keeping us informed as to status and situation whilst the crew kept the Champagne flowing :)

Ansett, great report. This was B789 VH-ZNE, that had arrived from LHR 52 minutes late at 1337, so effectively you only lost another 38 minutes on the ground.

You then arrived MEL at 2209, 69 late. The aircraft then formed QF95, the 2220 hour late evening MEL - LAX that pushed back at 0028, 128 minutes late - so again, further excess time at its gate - and took off at 0042 on Saturday 23 February, with LAX arrival suggested as 1925 hours, 105 minutes late.

...the NRT - MEL QF80 departed 76 late at 2036 hours on Friday 22 February with Saturday 23 arrival estimated at 0919 hours, 79 late.

This has led to a delay for QF79 on Saturday 23, with departure showing as 1020 hours, an hour late but it's already 1030. Tonight, either QF62 to BNE (ex NRT) or QF80 will be affected.

UPDATE: QF79 pushed back at 1048, 88 late with NRT arrival changed to a predicted 1905 hours, 85 late.

Friday 22 February's QF64 departed JNB 48 late at 1938 hours in the early evening, so Saturday afternoon SYD arrival is predicted as 1647, 72 late for this B744.

QF107, the 1335 hours SYD - PEK on Saturday is suggested as departing 95 minutes behind the timetable, at 1510 hours. This will mean a delayed QF107 ex PEK to early on Sunday morning mainland Chinese time.

Wonder if the escape slides got fixed - big loss for QF to have to block all those seats.

In more on Saturday 23 February, QF129, the 1055 hours SYD - PVG is expected to depart half an hour late.

UPDATE: It departed at 1129, with PVG arrival suggested as 1911 hours, 41 late.

QF93 from MEL to LAX was off blocks at 1125 hours, half an hour behind schedule. Arrival should be at 0707 hours, 42 minutes behind time. This may slightly delay the connecting QF11 B789 to JFK.

The 1225 hours SYD - MNL, QF19 should depart 35 minutes tardy.

The B744 from SYD to SFO, QF73, is estimated to push back tonight 65 late at 1900 hours, as it is to be formed by QF64 from JNB that is coming to gate 9 at 1650, more than an hour late.

UPDATE: QF19 was off its blocks in SYD at 1325, an hour late with MNL arrival claimed as 1822, 52 late. This will put back the 1900 hours QF20 to about 1935 at the earliest.

QF107 is further delayed to a predicted 1525 hours departure, and estimated arrival in PEK at midnight. QF108 will be unable to depart until 0115 on Sunday 24.

By my quick count that's 127 seats unable to be used in a 166 seat economy cabin. Ansett, was the problem fixed so passengers booked there could board?

Passengers were either upgraded or moved to alternative flights. I was in Y+ and ended up in J. Dont know if it was fixed in Melbourne but presume it would have been.

QF459 1800 SYD-MEL has just been up-gauged to a 330-200

So announcement 1 in the lounge:

“Delayed 20m to new boarding time 1800 due to late inbound crew”

Then Announcement 2 only 5m later: “Delayed with 1800 boarding due to waiting for 40pax from international flight”

QF73 departed SYD at 1913 hours with arrival changed to an estimated 1320 hours same day, 55 late.

QF1, the 1700 hours SYD - SIN - LHR had been predicted as punctual but pushed back 66 minutes late, with SIN arrival suggested as 2254 hours, 49 late.

Due to the delayed QF79 from MEL, QF62, the 1930 hours NRT down to BNE redeye is estimated to push back 50 minutes behind its schedule.

Friday 22 February's QF12 B789 departed JFK 41 minutes late at 1841 hours, arriving LAX at 2133, 38 late. This led to the connecting QF12 departing the latter at 2319, 49 minutes behind the timetable. Estimated SYD Sunday 24 morning arrival is 0916 hours, 41 minutes late.

Long haul A388 QF8 is often early or on time, but on Friday it left DFW 63 late at 2058 with predicted Sunday SYD at gate time 0700 hours, 55 minutes past the mandated.

Is there any one reason for such delays at JFK? Or does it just fall into the category of old and congested?

On that occasion, there was no nasty weather at the airfield, or anywhere near. The reason was ATC though. Because they have so many airports, with so much traffic, in close proximity, they won't let us find our own way through any weather. They simply close, or reroute, affected tracks. On that night the weather was well to the east of JFK, and we were going west, but there's no way to pass on most taxiways.

QF459 (A332 VH-EBD) took off at 12836, arriving MEL 10 minutes late at 1945, so 'on time' according to the 15 minute allowance. However on Thursday night it had been cancelled, on Wednesday it was 27 late arriving at the gate in Melbourne, and on Friday night, 34 late. Count yourself fortunate. These three others were all B738s.

How did you work that out?

From memory, it’s a one day, or one flight MEL.

From what Ansett posted about seats from row 46 back being blocked and hence unable to be used.

I don't have a copy of the MELs any more, but I didn't think the effect was that bad. It's one door out of eight, and yet that blockage is half of the seats. I'll see if I can find the actual MEL.

Great, but from what AFFer Ansett posted, he implied that a fairly large number of passengers had to be rebooked or (including in his case) moved forward, so he ended up in J not W class.
