Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Continuing with Saturday 9 February, QF33, the 0930 hours SYD - KIX departed only five minutes late at 0935 but expected arrival has become 1803, 33 late. That A333 VH-QPA did not take off until 1001 hours may be part of the reason.

QF2021 (Q300 VH-TQZ, the 1000 ARM down to SYD airborne at 1121) arrived at 1230 hours, 70 minutes tardy.

Not delay, but quick FYI that QF435 is a B747 (VH-OEG), QF clearly trying to clear the backlog of delays from yesterday.

Also not a delay as such, but QF6146 (B738 VH-VYL) is operating from SYD down to MEL. This must be an empty ('ferry') flight. I'd have thought that with more flights cancelled last night southbound than northbound, it'd be needed to carry MEL-bound passengers but I must be incorrect. It should arrive at about 1405, having taken off at 1254.

QF3 (B744 VH-OEB) was late yesterday due to the Sydney afternoon/ evening storms, arriving HNL on Friday 8 February at 0954, 114 minutes behind schedule. It then took off as QF4 at 1239 on Friday, With Saturday 9 arrival in SYD suggested as 1857 hours tonight.

Another flight southbound, QF4D (B744 VH-OJS) is later. It was the Wednesday 6 northbound QF3 that spent two days in Honolulu. Quickstatus posted commentary on this in the JQ delays/cancellations thread. VH-OJS departed HNL at 1506 hours on Friday 8 February, 306 minutes behind schedule with Saturday 9 arrival estimated as 2156 hours, 286 late. VH-OJS is in its last couple of weeks' service with QF before presumably a 'ferry' (empty) flight to a suitable graveyard in the USA.

On Saturday 9 February, QF3 continued to be tardy, departing SYD at 2100 hours, 95 late. Same day HNL arrival should be 0856, 56 late, delaying the returning QF4.

Friday 8's QF12 departed JFK a minute early at 1759 but arrival at LAX became 2137, 42 late. The onwards QF12 (different aircraft: A388 not B789) departed an hour late at 2330 with Sunday 10 arrival suggested as 0935, also an hour late.

QF94 (LAX down to MEL) was 20 late pushing back at 2315 hours. Sunday arrival should be 1021, 31 late.

The LAX - BNE pushed back half an hour late on Friday night at 2350, so Sunday arrival should be 0816, 61 late. However this should not delay QF15, the 1120 hours BNE back over to LAX.

Friday 8 February's QF2 departed LHR 58 late at 2143 hours, arriving SIN on Saturday 9 at 1830, 45 late. Departure was expected at 2000 but is later than that for the redeye down to SYD.

Sunday 10 February sees QF79 (0920 hours morning MEL - NRT) departing 52 late with arrival estimated as 1848, 68 late.

Q27 from SYD to SCL, always operated by a B744 is often late. Today is no exception with expected departure delayed until 1430, 100 minutes late for arrival at 1240, 90 minutes tardy. At least passengers on Sunday 10's QF28 know they'll be untimely departing about 15 hours before it's scheduled.

UPDATE: QF27 departed SYD at 1440 hours, becoming airborne at 1504. Arrival should be at 1242, 92 late. VH-OJS, soon to be scrapped, is the B744, having been in Sydney since 2155 last night upon arriving very late as QF4D.

Qantas is still showing Sunday 10's QF28 as pushing back in SCL at 1335 hours (on time), but that is a nonsense, with 1420 onwards a realistic time.

QF29, the 0945 hours MEL - HKG has been affected by the alleged VA catering truck collision with B789 VH-ZNG, the latter still being under repair.

QF29 is (at this stage) to be a B744 for six of the next seven days (excluding Wednesday 13 February - A332) and then supposedly on Sunday 17 February resume operation as a B789.

One wonders in these circumstances does VA or its contractor admit 100 per cent liability or is there an exchange of legal letters and emails?

An expensive little collision!

QF97/98 will be a 744 on Wednesday 13.

The resumption of 789 flights on 17 Feb falls on the same day as retirement of OJS. It may be a case of cancellations if ZNG isn’t repaired by then.

QF58 diverted to CNS and had an evacuation due to engine overheating.

Thanks milehighclub (for the 200th time). Looks to have been B738 VH-VZW that was the 1310 hours PM - BNE in the air at 1321. It arrived CNS at 1502 AEST, and not surprisingly appears to be still in CNS with passengers possibly transferred to domestic flights (although how many spare seats would these have on a Sunday arvo?)

'The Cairns Post' has just published an article online but it's paywalled.

On Monday 11 February 2019, QF35, the all too often delayed MEL - SIN departed at 1303, 43 late with SIN arrival estimated as 1749, 44 late. Aircraft is A388 VH-OQG.

Although QF93 pushed back in MEL 62 late at 1207 hours, LAX arrival should be only 25 late at 0650. Winds must be very favourable.

In more on Monday 11 February, QF9 creditably departed MEL four early at 1701 hours with B789 VH-ZNF, but had not taken off by 1755, an unusually long period from pushback.

UPDATE: It was airborne at 1756 on runway 27. PER arrival is expected 36 late at 1846 so the onward leg to LHR will be similarly delayed.

I wish I knew of the flight, would've booked a day trip to Melbourne!

Maybe in future a way to 'cheat' is to look at the days of operation of this Captain's Choice/ Phil Asker Antarctic tour, given that normally no QF B744s are based in Melbourne. Website is (naturally) Antarctic Flights. BNE and ADL departures are respectively 10 and 24 November 2019.

Each to his or her own but to me these day tours are a complete waste of money. If memory serves me well, there are fewer run today than a decade ago. Either go there by ship or not at all. Fare is $1200 (no view, Y) to $8000 (presumably the old F seats).

Wouldn't go on those Antarctica sightseeing flights - can't afford the good seats! :p Was referring to just making a SYD-MEL overnight trip to take advantage of the B744 positioning flight. Spending the weekend in Melbourne isn't half-bad (and still cheaper than a sightseeing flight!).

On Tuesday 12 February 2019, QF6160 is being operated by A333 VH-QPH and may be a test or training run as it is undertaking repeated circuits above or adjacent to AVV. It took off from MEL at 0728 hours. Last night, the aircraft arrived from AKL 20 minutes early at 2105 on QF158.

There will be a reason but it often surprises me (at face value) that QF 'wastes' an A333 sometimes on a TransTasman short flight when longer trips to southeast Asia are crying out for an A333 instead of an A332. The former have some features that the latter lack.

At 0920 hours, MEL appears to be down to single runway operations so some delays are the case for departures with a large number queued. For instance, QF418 had departed its gate at 0857, three minutes early as the 0900 hours MEL - SYD but by 0926 had yet to become airborne.

In fuirther on Tuesday 12 February 2019, QF417 (B738 VH-VXB, the 0830 hours SYD down to MEL airborne at 0932) should arrive at its gate at 1056 hours, 51 late. MEL is back to dual runway ops.

QF1583 (B717 VH-NXR, the 0955 hours SYD - HBA) took off at 1044 hours so arrival has become a suggested 1228 hours, 38 late.
