Qantas Delays/Cancellations

In further on Tuesday 19 June 2018, QF2164, the nicely timed 0830 hours SYD - PQQ that was airborne at 0929 with Q300 VH-TQH should arrive at 1025 hours, 45 late.

Not far behind, though on a diverging track is QF2106 (Q400 VH-LQF, the 0835 hours SYD up to CFS that took off about the same amount late at 0934.) Its arrival is predicted as 1033, 43 minutes tardy.

QF417 (B738 VH-VZZ, the 0830 hours SYD down to MEL that did not get into the sky until 0931) should pull in to its arrival gate at 1046 hours, 41 late.

Much later on 19 June 2018, QF458 (VH-VYK, a B738), the 1800 hours MEL up to SYD that was in the sky at 1845 is likely to arrive at 2018, 53 minutes tardy.

The ADL - STD QF766 is the next one in with arrival at about 2020, 35 late for VH-VXE.

QF1520 is next but its plane, B717 VH-YQV with this timetabled 1715 hours ex CBR not having taken off until 1927, so arrival is estimated at 2021 hours, 131 late.

Also on Tuesday 19 June 2018, the evening (1830 hours) CBR - SYD QF1522 (B717 VH-NXI) that took off at a delayed 2008 hours was already in a hold over nearby Gunning by 2024, such is the congestion in Sydney. Arrival is estimated at about 2100 tonight, 95 late.

QF478, the 1845 hours MEL - SYD that took off at 1923 is ahead of 'the 1522' and is in a hold above Goulburn as at 2026, so it won't arrive until at least 32 late at 2042. Aircraft is B738 VH-VZW.

Tuesday 19 June's QF23 departed SYD at 1022, 32 late but did not arrive at its BKK gate until 1737, 57 late. The 1810 hours QF24 redeye ex the Thai capital is expected to commence pushing back at 1900, meaning a Wednesday 20 arrival at 0720 hours, 55 late.

QF81 from SYD to SIN pushed back only 11 minutes late at 1026 but did not arrive SIN until 1835 tonight, 45 minutes tardy.

The 1035 hours SYD - HKG (B744 VH-OEF) was far worse with departure at 1301 meaning a 1933 (93 late) arrival in the Asian financial centre. The 2000 hours scheduled redeye back to SYD, QF128 should be about 65 minutes late away.

The B744 on QF63 (1055 hours late morning SYD - JNB) departed 59 late but arrival is not predicted until 1815, 75 late, resulting in a delayed pushing back for redeye QF64.

QF7 (1234 hours SYD - DFW) unusually did not depart until 1412, meaning same day arrival at an estimated 1450, 110 late.

Monday 18's QF12 departed LAX 59 late at 2329 hours, so Wednesday 20 June arrival in SYD is forecast as 0720 hours, 50 late. The B744 on QF16 departed 45 late at 0005 hours super early today with Wednesday arrival likely at 0635, half an hour behind, so QF15 tomorrow out of BNE should be on time.

Wednesday 20 June 2018 finds QF416, the 0830 hours MEL - SYD that took off at 0916 with A332 VH-EBV likely to arrive at 1026, 31 late.

Southbound QF461 (B738 VH-VZB), the 0845 hours SYD - MEL was in the sky at 0931, meaning likely arrival at 1052, 32 late.

QF79 (0910 hours MEL up to NRT) departed 69 minutes behind the timetable with arrival suggested at 1923 hours tonight, 48 late.

The almost perenially late QF23, the scheduled 0950 hours from SYD to BKK is expected to depart at 1130, meaning arrival in the Thai capital is delayed until at least 1735, 55 minutes tardy. QF24, the redeye back to SYD will be unable to punctually depart.

The 1015 SYD - KIX, QF33 did not get away untilo 1049 so arrival is forecast for 1950, 40 late, meaning in turn some delay to QF34 back overnight down to SYD.

QF129 (0930 hours SYD - PVG, quite a long flight) does not have quite as bad a timekeeping record despite the problems from mainland Chinese military occupying airspace, but its departure today is estimated to occur at 1045 with PVG arrival likely at 2006 hours, 101 late.Inevitably QF130 will be late into SYD tomorrow morning.

The 1035 hours SYD - HKG QF127 is predicted to depart shortly, at 1100.

QF107, the 1210 hours lunchtime SYD - PEK should depart at 1300 with arrival late tonight local time at 2310, 55 late. QF108 will therefore be delayed in coming off blocks.

Although the Tuesday 19 June 2018 QF11 from LAX to JFK only arrived three minutes late in JFK, the returning QF12 B744 is expected to depart at 2110 hours, three hours late. From what I can see thunderstorms are playing havoc with air traffic in the area, which as one of our aviators mentioned some time ago can be a significant problem for flights bound for or departing from JFK.

LAX arrival is estimated at 2340 hours, 160 minutes late. This will probably delay the A388 on QF12 from LAX to SYD that arrives the latter on Thursday 21 June, and most certainly delay the BNE-bound QF16 that is normally formed by the aircraft of the transcon USA QF12.

QF94 and QF96 are both operating to MEL ex LAX on Tuesday night so that may assist in accommodating the delayed passengers, and perhaps allowing 'the 94' to get away on time, although 'the 96' as a B789 is not a high capacity aircraft.

So at this stage anyone booked on QF15 tomorrow (Thursday) from BNE to LAX might expect to be delayed, unless QF works a spare B744 up to BNE, not something that it has done lately although a couple of years ago it occurred a few times from memory.

QF23 (see the second last posting above) on Wenesday 20 June departed later than forecast, at 1150, taking off at about 1208 with A333 VH-QPC. Arrival should be at roughly 1821, 101 minutes late, meaning tonight's QF24 (the 1810 hours) may depart at around the 1935 hours mark.

The expected delay to Tuesday 19 June's QF12 departing from JFK has ballooned to 2130 for LAX arrival at 0017 today (Wednesday), 197 late. QF12 from LAX to SYD is forecast to depart at 0110 hours for SYD Thursday 21 arrival at 0915 hours, 165 minutes behind schedule.

QF16 should depart at 0215 hours on Wednesday 20 for Thursday 21 BNE arrival suggested as 0905, three hours late. QF94 to MEL looks to be unaffected so presumably any JFK connectees will transfer to QF96 that has been altered to depart 75 late at 0110 hours on Wednesday.

QF1 on Wednesday 20 June had been showing as delayed by an expected hour to 1655 in its SYD departure but this has become 1900 hours. SIN arrival is predicted as 0125 hours, 190 minutes late with an 0315 hours departure (rather unsavoury time wise!) meaning forecast LHR arrival on Thursday at 1020 hours, 205 late.

Sort of like the bad old days via DXB!

UPDATE: As at 2001 hours, QF was still showing '1900' as the QF1 departure time.

In the past, this has been a bad sign: it suggested that whatever problem there is has not been fixed.

At least SYD - SIN is not a very long sector, so crew have plenty of hours up their sleeve.

QF29 MEL-HKG has diverted to Manila.
Qantas (QF) #29 ✈ FlightAware

Thanks Blackbird.

The aircraft is A333 VH-QPB that took off from MEL more or less on time at 0956 hours, landing at MNL at 1723 (an hour ago as I write.)

This seems very slow for MEL - MNL as it's flying time of nine hours 27 minutes, although the aircraft had travelled some distance northwest of MNL before it turned back, and then by the looks of things had to queue for arrival.

Was this a medical diversion or some aircraft failure?

UPDATE: It has just departed MNL at 1823 hours so that suggests to me the diversion was 'medical.' Information would be appreciated. HKG arrival is displaying as a projected 2025 hours, 185 minutes late.

QF98 from HKG down overnight to BNE, the 2015 hours, is expected to depart at 2120 as it must be formed by the delayed QF29. As at 2053 AEST, QF29 was still taxiing in MNL so I suspect the delay to QF62 may be longer than the QF software is indicating.

QF19 from SYD to MNL (A332 VH-EBR, the 1210 hours that was airborne at 1256) should arrive at about 1910, 40 minutes late. This will slightly delay tonight's QF20, the redeye back down to SYD.

Oh dear.

This afternoon's QF1, the 1555 hours from SYD to SIN and LHR has been altered to depart at 1455 hours on Thursday 21 June with the SIN stop to be from 2115 to 2315 tomorrow night and the LHR arrival projected as 0615 hours on Friday 22 June.

A consequence will be the Thursday 21 June 2115 hours QF2 from LHR delayed until some time on Friday, but the exact schedule has yet to publicly appear.

One difficulty is that as far as I know, the flight crew on these A388 flights are ex Australia so require minimum rest. It may therefore be impossible for this flight to turn around and say depart LHR on Friday morning at 0830 or something like that to minimise the delay. Please correct me, but the cabin crew (unlike QF9/10 via PER) are also ex Oz are they not for 'the 1' and 'the 2?'

QF19 coming into MNL is about to pass a stationary QF29 that is second in the queue for departure. Unusual location for this.

The diverted QF29 took off from MNL on 20 June at 1934 (71 minutes after pushback) so arrival at HKG is unlikely much before 2130, meaning QF98 from HKG to BNE will be unlikely to depart before 2245 tonight. This means BNE arrival tomorrow morning (Thursday 21) at around 0930 hours.

The expected delay to Tuesday 19 June's QF12 departing from JFK has ballooned to 2130 for LAX arrival at 0017 today (Wednesday), 197 late.... QF94 to MEL looks to be unaffected so presumably any JFK connectees will transfer to QF96 that has been altered to depart 75 late at 0110 hours on Wednesday.

This turned out to be an understatement of the delay to QF96.

B789 VH-ZNA should arrive in MEL at 1016 on Thursday 21 June, 111 minutes late.

Northbound QF418, the 0900 hours MEL up to SYD that was in the sky at 0953 (B738 VH-VZY) looks to be arriving at 1107 hours, 42 late.

Although QF36 was 10 minutes realy into MEL this morning at 0525 and QF94 from LAX just a minute late at 0731, departure of the A388 on QF93 is delayed by 90 minutes to 1030 hours.

The frequently delayed QF23 from SYD to BKK is living up to its recent 'reputation' with a 70 minute late pushback at 1100 anticipated, meaning QF24 tonight will be inevitably late ex the Thai capital for the redeye run back down to SYD.

Due to QF107 being late yesterday, the overnight PEK - SYD QF108 should arrive this afternoon at 1435, 75 late.

In comparison, QF7, a long flight, is often punctual but today its departure is forecast as 160 late at 1515 hours mid afternoon for arrival same day at 1545 instead of 1300 hours.

As noted a few paragraphs above, yesterday's QF1 A388 from SYD to SIN and on to LHR should depart 23 hours late at 1455 today.

The same fault has befallen today's QF1, so it is retimed to depart at 1455 on Friday.

I assume that apart from defective planes, one problem is a limited number of QF flight (and cabin) crew enroute who need a minimum rest period before operating the next flight. This may be acute in London as QF9/10 are now B789s, so the pilots and FOs are not interchangable as was the case previously when all four flights were A388s and all ran via DXB.

The Thursday 21 June QF2 from LHR, the 2115 hours has been altered to depart at 0810 hours on Friday 22, with its predicted SIN stop 0405 to 0535 on Saturday 23 and SYD arrival anticipated at 1505 instead of 0510. At least being an 0810 from LHR it means anyone booked in a QF-supplied hotelo can rise at say 0430 - not ideal, but better than having to awake from one's enforced slumber at 0230 for an 0600 departure.

Not great to have the LHR A388 schedules in chaos.

Passenger reports as to how you are treated (hotels - where and how efficient were any transfers, meals, rebookings) would be welcome.

The expected delay noted above to QF23 on Thursday 21 June has risen to 100 minutes (1130), but as at 1140, the flight did not appear to have pushed back in SYD for BKK.

QF93 departed MEL at 1055 hours, 115 minutes tardy. Arrival same day in LAX for A388 VH-OQL should be at 0750 hours, 85 late. It will be interesting to see if QF11 is held for the journey across to JFK.

The two consecutive days of QF1/QF2 delays (commecing with Wednesday 20 June's QF1 from SYD to SIN and LHR being delayed 23 hours to an expected 1455 hours ex SYD this arvo, and the same tomorrow for today's QF1) reflects the A388 fleet situation for QF.

VH-OQA is in SYD, having arrived on QF8 this morning (21 June.) QF12's arrival into SYD this morning was VH-OQB while VH-OQC arrived on QF2 ex SIN. All well and good.

However, yesterday's QF1 and today's QF11 (already departed with VH-OQF) and QF7, plus today's QF1 all need A388s, so 'the 1' today is delayed to tomorrow.

VH-OQG is in DXB maintenance, having arrived on 16 June 2018 late at night.

VH-OQH arrived in SYD on the morning of 19 June ex QF2 but oes not appear to have carried passengers since that Tuesday on blocks.

VH-OQI is in SYD, having been there since arriving on QF8 on the morning of 2 June 2018.

QF must have banked on two A388s being inoperable but it looks to have three out of service, meaning the London flights suffer.

QFlyer, please correct any of the above that is incorrect!

Continuing with Thursday 21 June, QF23 from SYD to BKK eventually departed at 1151, 121 late, so arrival is predicted for 1840, two hours exactly late. QF24 is still publicly displaying as departing at 1810 on time but that is impossible. A likely departure is at 1955 if all goes well.

QF107 departed SYD 42 late at 1252 with arrival forecast for 2259 tonight, 44 late.

The overnight HKG - BNE QF98 arrived this morning at 0849 hours, 104 late. This meant QF97 was only 15 minutes late in its off blocks.
