I took advantage of the info about QC re the offer to join with joining fee waived in a recent posting and took up 2 year membership so now I belong to QP.
All it took was after getting such a good tip I wrote to QFF Centre told them about my planned travel over next two years and would be interested in taking up the offer sent to selected QFF as per email posted recently.
24 hours later I was called and advised I could join by quoting the "offer" and was in.

And also received a follow up call to say Thank you from Qantas FFC.

The Tips re Australian and Bangkok relate to some news briefs from a couple of Magazines from Australia from their news brief columns.

Qantas looking to position Australian or Jetstar to compete with other airlines on MEL/Syd to LAX via HNL and soak up holiday traffic and keep premium dollars with Qantas business class and full economy.

Also article refers to greater cost efficiencies flying to Bangkok from Australia and return due to operating at cruising altitude longer each way and Bangkok offer cheaper costs and more capacity on the ground.

The offer mentioned at the start of this thread was 18 months ago. I am not aware of any current offers for Qantas Club membership with the joining fee being waived.

However, one option you may like to consider is that if flying MEL-PER-MEL 2 to 3 times per month may be ample to warrant taking the AA Platinum Challenge. Note that there is rumour that the challenge rules will change for people starting the challenge next year, so best to start this year if you can.

And the time to complete the challenge will depend on the fare you purchase. If using Y or B fares, you will complete the AA challenge in 2 return trips, and then you will have OneWorld Sapphire status until the end of Feb 2008. OneWorld Sapphire status gets you access to Qantas Club lounges when flying with any OneWorld airline which obviously includes Qantas domestic flights.

If the fare purchased is one that earns 1 EQP per mile flowm, then it will take 3 return trips to complete the challenge.

See the sticky thread in the AAdvantage forum for details on how the challenge works and the full benefits.

If using the Qantas FF program, and assuming fares are K, H, B or Y, you will earn 40 status credits for each one-way MEL-PER segment, so will require 9 return flights to make Qantas Gold status, or 17 return flights to make platinum status) and Qantas Club access is granted with Gold and Platinum status. So with 3 return trips a month, you will have complementary lounge access at the end of the third month.

A bit of trivia I have come across on Thai websites. Suvarnabhumi Airport is pronounced Suan-na-phuum in Thai or Su-wana-poom which may be easier for westerners to pronounce.

The challenge is an unpublished benefit. The details of it are in the thread in the AA forum on this board. To register, phone the AAdvantage desk in the USA and ask to be signed up for it. Technically, the Australian office should be able to do it, but I wouldn;t trust them to do it

As an aside, The AA office in N Sydney is open for one more week. The office is then moving to Mascot , so there will still be an Australian location for issuing OWE tickets et al

Phone AAdvantage Customer Service in the US on +1 817 799 2500 ( from Australia , replace the + with 0011 )

Sign up for an AAdvantage account on-line. Then call the USA number to register for the challenge.

If that is the roman ruins I am thinking of then a tip would be to pick up the return ticket from there (but then you already know this).
