Hi folks
I'd appreciate input.

I need to renew my paid-for Qantas club renewal by end of January, and am currently only Silver but will reach Gold at the end of March. I'm unlikely to travel solo prior to March and MrP is WP anyway so access if I travel with him. (He'll be LTG within 6 months I'd say so he will never need to renew again)

My membership is as a companion to his - a long time ago - paid for membership.

I know if I renew and then reach Gold then my paid for membership extends those additional months.

What are the disadvantages if I don't renew but wait for status membership ?

Tx for all input.

If you don't renew then theoretically if you ever drop down below Gold, you may need to pay the joining fee again if you were ever to rejoin the QP. Other than that, if you don't need membership for lounge access in the next few months I can't think of any other disadvantages.

Thanks Opusman. I must check membership offers through AFF. I'm not sure if this SG is a once off for me. On the other hand I have a rampant travel bug. And am SKIing as I've no grandchildren in sight. :p. And a taste of J and even F isn't helping reduce the bug. But it's all self funded.

I was wondering about the 'join' fee if you slip from Gold... might be worth checking out with QFFF. You theoretically get complimentary membership as gold, so it might be that you are already a member and exempt from joining fees.

You get three months and no join fee.

I remember reading on AFF of people who dropped from Gold and were given three month complimentary QP memberships, which then allowed them to renew QP without a joining fee. But that was a while ago and only anecdotal; I wouldn't rely on it.

Miss FM dropped from Gold to silver at the end of August 2014, there was no additional 3 months but she did get 2 months to take out a paid membership during which time the joining fee would be waived.

That sounds like it might be best to call and check I won't need to pay a join fee if I slipped. In reality I was gold a few years ago but paid membership continued on and I paid next year as normal.

When I was previously SG I didn't really know what that meant. I remember queuing up in Hong Kong with my mum and the crew were walking along waiting passengers checking all their details. We were at the end of the queue. The guy looked at SG and escorted me to the front of the line, almost admonishing me for queuing. I know waaaay more now. Mostly.

I'm not sure what the requirements are for the 'three months free'.

I got it the first time I dropped from gold - but I'd held status for many years before that.

Going to gold briefly (one year) and then back I got nothing (except for the 'grace period' to rejoin without the fee).

So it's potentially a 'one-off' 3-months, or maybe how many years you held status before dropping.

Not sure - master FM held gold for a number of years and then slipped and was offered the 3 months but that was some years ago. Miss FM was platinum for one year and then slipped to Gold then silver and didn't get offered any 3 months. It could be that they no longer offer 3 months, or could be a function of how many years you had gold - need more data points :)

Maybe spend the money you would have spent on renewal and give yourself a treat flying on the refurbished A330 and get you to gold that little bit quicker.

You get three months and no join fee.

This was my experience as well. Dropped from SG to QP PS with expiry in 3 months. Was then given the option to 'renew' QP membership without join fee.

An update. I will achieve gold part way across the Ditch. I then have two flights the next day. I realised I wont have received the status points in time for me to use the lounge in BNE and MEL and after flying F on Emirates the night before, the thought of no club after so many years of being a member might do me in. So I will have to pay!

Can you source 2 QP passes in time for BNE and MEL?

Woohoo! PS is good for something! :D

The timing worked out well. PS to SG in two months. Two more luggage tags. Two more in a few weeks time. Mr P will get two more when reaching WP again. Think we are up to 16 now! Coasters?
