Does anyone know what would happen if a life member of the QF Club joins their spouse as a partner lift member when married, and they subsequently divorce. Altough this did happen to myself I am on very good terms with my ex and would not want her to lose that membership. I was just wondering if anyone knew what, if anything, would occur if was divorce was really ugly (not that I've known of a good divorce) Is the life member supposed to notify the QC of the change in the union etc.

Hey maca44, that's a damn fine question. I've been through a divorce, but at that time, numer 1 wife was a QF staffer so I had no need for buying her anything - we were usually on ID90 (staff) tickets and were dissuaded from going into the Flight Deck/QC (even on my FD/QC membership at the time).

Whilst I am a now QC Life member (joined @ $3,000 just before I got free membership through Gold and then Plat membership  ), I've never purchased QC Lifetime for my second spouse. My current spouse has AA Plat status and very rarely has been flying without me (thus I get us both in on my Plat membership).

But turning back to your conundrum, I haven't heard of anybody I know in that situation. If you are still in contact with your ex and on good terms, I presume that your address details in both your profiles still shows your current address (but she would probably be getting her statements by email).

To answer your last point, looking at the Qantas Club T&C's, I think they clearly define your position :

2. Definitions
2.1 In these Terms and Conditions, unless the context otherwise requires:

'Partner' means the spouse, or domestic partner, who resides at the same address as the Primary Member;
and

3. Types of membership

3.3 Partner memberships are available under the following conditions:

(a) Partner membership is only available whilst the Primary Member is a current Qantas Club Member and whose account is not in default.

(b) Partner membership will have the same expiry date as that of the Primary Member.

(c) The Partner must reside at the same address as the Primary Member.

(d) Only one Partner membership is permitted per Primary Member.

(e) A Partner Member who ceases to reside at the same address as the Primary Member, must return their Card and either relinquish their membership or, with the agreement of the Primary Member, pay the pro rata difference between Partner and Primary membership rates to upgrade to a full membership.

(f) A new Partner can only be registered once the existing Partner has returned their Card and either relinquished their Partner membership or upgraded to a full membership.

It's a shame you can't sell your QC life membership. :(

In situations where you attain complimentary membership through Gold or Platinum status then you should be able to on sell your QC life membership or at least sub-lease it to someone until you need it again. After all you have paid for QC life membership and you are not getting any benefit from it.

But then they would be losing money so they wouldn't allow anyone to do any of these deals. It is a shame.

But there will be a time when I will need it again (when I drop from Plat, through Gold and back to Silver or Bronze  ). However, I am trying vainly to put off the inevitable for as long as possible. at the moment, I envisage Plat until 28 Feb 07, Gold until 28 Feb 08. Therefore, on 1 March 2008, as a mere Silver member, I'll get to use my Life membership again.

At least I didn't lose it in my divorce :)

Well, we definitely don't reside in the same address so I guess QF don't check the addresses because I receive mail at my place, and she at hers.

Lindsay, I joined as a life member by chance in 1988. I was a life member of the Ansett Golden Wings and had just arrived at Sydney on an Ansett flight which, at that time, I thought offered a much better product than QF. I had about an hour to kill to be picked up and went to the QC simply to pick up a brochure from the front desk receptionist. After being handed the brochure and walking away she noticed my Golden Wings luggage tag and asked what status was I at the Golden Wings. When I told her she asked for me to wait and contacted her supervisor. The Supv came to the front desk, and after I told him that I was simply inquiring about membership to the QC he asked to see my Golden Wings Card, which I showed him. He explained that if I was a life member of the Golden Wings Club, that Qantas wanted my business and he crossed out the amount on the QC brochure (can't remember what it was now) wrote down $750 and signed it. It was some sort of membership drive at the time. Cut a long story short, paid the next day and in September 2001 when I was in USA using a F class ticket on 200,000 Ansett points with United, Ansett went bust. At least I am in a much better position to have used them as I know of many who lost heaps.

Could not envisage that someone of your importance would be a mere PS in 30 months time.

I think you will be WP or SG for a little while longer even if QFF keep comping you to keep levels up.

I'm not sure about life memberships (or "lift" for that matter), but a collegue of mine had a partner membership. She and her partner separated. Her membership stayed as it was until the end of her "year' and Qantas then offered her renewal at the normal "single" year price with no joining fee.

Serfty, I can only assume the reason QF ascertained your friend had separated is that a partnership renewal was sent out and his sense of humour did not extend to paying the QC renewal for her, but after I paid the $2500 (or whatever it was in 1997) for partnership life membership we don't receive any renewal etc, and as we receive on line statements we never hear from QF. Even though I am aware they lurk on this forum I won't bring it to their attention, but I assume that if QF did become aware they would most likely offer single Life membership and take into account the $2500 already paid for life partner. This is just one of those curly questions I have not seen on this forum or any other forum for that matter, and it must be a good question if it has Lindsay stumped.

Hmm, I wonder what the pro-rata value of a partly used life membership might be?

Well according to the Tax Office, a life membership is deemed to have cost one-tenth of the purchase price per year for the first ten years, then nothing for the rest of your life.

So I guess for resale its value diminishes by 10% of its purchase price each year, and after 10 years it has no resale value - you might as well just give it away. :)

Well, if you know when you purchased it and you know when you are going to die, then we can work it out :)

And if one has a Lifetime Qantas Club membership, and then attains Lifetime Gold FF status, so long as the Gold membership benefits remain the same you should be good for lifetime lounge access for two lifetimes, so reincarnation becomes a more attractive belief :D .

Now to convince the lounge agent that I am actually a reincarnated CL member who also had a paid lifetime club membership and had attained lifetime Gold FF status :p .

NM, if you manage to strike the latest QF trainee with an IQ of 2, you might be in with a chance. (I think they put these people in the FF call centre).

Ah, JohnK, I'm not that important to QF...and neither will status be important to me by that stage. I'm looking forward to family becoming the most important part of my life.

There was a time in my life when I throught status was omnipotent. Now I realise there is more to life (but it took cancer to make me work it all out)...

Sad to hear that Lindsay. :(

After having a heart attack at 39 years of age most of the things in my life I considered important seem so insignificant now. For me if I go to sleep and wake up the next day is a blessing, everything else in between is a bonus.

Just remember that family and travel do not need to be mutually exclusive. Mini NM#4 is about to take her second trans-continental flight (in J  what have I created). The hard part is getting the mix right 8) - after 3 months at home, Mrs NM is about ready to drive me to the airport again :p .

Partner Senior Life

I'd love to be able to buy senior partner life (and save $800 or $900) membership ... but I can't find any life member prepared to take me on. I do have a dowry of 250,000 Mileage Plus miles

JohnK, I was lucky that I found it when I did and it was only a mild form (Clarke Level 3 malignant melanoma, where the levels are the depth in millimetres of invasion into the skin). Surgery 4 days later and regular check-ups.

JohnK, then I'll return the "sad to hear that"...you then understand as well. I'm 39 next year.

We'll share a beer over this at the BNE Intl QP
