Qantas Classic Reward & Upgrade Devaluation on 5 August 2025

A colleague is curious whether they could book a one-way prior to the enhancement to the program for departure in February 2026, then later call in to tack on the return sector as availability appears for the flight and take advantage of the current pricing for the return award?

If they add a return sector after the devaluation, I believe that the points should be recalculated for the entire itinerary according to the new prices.

It works that way for taxes & fees, so I’d assume it would work that way for points too.

What if they had a return flight booked (in economy) but later find a business class award available. Could they switch to that flight and just pay what the point difference would be under the pre-August 2025 award chart?

I doubt it, as it's still processed as a recalculation.

Happy to be corrected here - I'm not 100% certain.

The taxes and fees recalc is a different process, as this specifically refers to the change in award chart pricing. So if you make a booking prior to 5 August, you'll pay the old award rates on that PNR. Taxes and fees would be recalculated regardless if you add a flight on, but they're not changing in value for the same thing i.e. SYD-SIN in Y costs more points, but the taxes are consistent.

I think I'll just make a speculative booking AU - SE Asia R/T in J for next March and then try and find a good fare to Europe in J from there. Worst comes to the worst, I'll just cancel for a refund, minus the 6,000 pts, which by then will have been significantly devalued. Yes, I know that optons are limited...
