Qantas Business Class meals & menus

Another throwback as I'm still catching up on my backups.

12 May 2023 - QF127 - SYD to HKG (A380 - VH-OQL)
I was lucky to snag an F seat on this unrefurbished A380. Service is a little more personal and professional as the cabin seats much less than the set up in J. The atittude I feel were more towards asian airlines mannerisms on this flight than what I have experienced in QF J more recently.

PDB offered - got the champagne. I had an early connecting flight prior to this thus had asked whether I could choose to have my meal service delayed however this was denied. I managed to sneak in a little 45 minute nap prior to the food service starting.

No apertivo - arancini offered. Not sure why.

Started off with the Potato and leak soup. I have now learnt my lesson with QF soups - just don't go there. This wasn't quite canned level quality but not that much better. Thin and somewhat flavourless. Best part is the accompanying sourdough and legendary butter combo.

Despite the varying opinions on having a steak onboard, I almost always choose this option as the main on flights as I find the other choices quite uninspired or too alike the food I will experience at my destination. This occasion was no different.

Steak was mostly rare - medium rare which is perfect to my tastes. Roast carrots and spinach were firm and didn't add much to the overall experience aside from presentation. Sky Spritz was a nice refresher.

A QF classic - ice cream sandwich. Would like these more often particularly coming up to summer.

The service prior to arrival started around 90 minutes prior to arrival in HKG. I am a big fan of snapper and the other meal option appeared less interesting. When this came out I was very surprised. Rather than a roll it was very burger like and the snapper patty was massive. The chocolate walnut cake was excellent as well. Easily the best QF meal I've had to date. Champagne was also enjoyed.

Snapper option deserved two pictures.

Fruit platter and champagne to finish.

Overall a very comfortable flight with a food and beverage service which I thoroughly enjoyed. One of the best QF J experiences I've had. I admit I may have gotten very lucky with my seat choice which influenced the overall experience and thus YMMV particularly on flights featuring the older A380s.

*I have this test of how easy it is to get water refills for the supplied water bottle during the flight. This time the water bottle was refilled willingly and remained full more often than not. Excellent.

A couple of recent domestic leisure flights and service and food were chalk and cheese.

Priority boarding not enforced at all and a free for all, no PDB (not even bottle water) Service and crew were great though. I chose the Kung Pao chicken and it was tasty and enjoyed it. Cake was rock hard and disgusting but still a good meal. Spirits proactively topped up frequently and very friendly staff. Use of J loo was heavily enforced. All in all decent flight

Morning flight, Priority boarding enforced and well worked, bottle of water and PDB offered but that’s about where the service stopped. Breakfast was a black rice salad and was absolutely disgusting and actually tasted off. Going by others in J who barely ate any I figured the same. Other options were scrambled eggs or Bircher muesli. Service was inattentive and seemed quite disjointed. Had a vodka for breakfast but glass sat empty forever and no sign of staff. Constant stream of passengers using the forward loo and on disembarking there was no effort to prevent the herd storming the front so had to take matters into my own hands.
Really poor flight

Oh and a big fail to the SYD QF Dom J lounge.
Absolute pigsty and a disgrace to their network
Same re disembarking.
I’ll stand up (only 5’10” but a solid 112kegs) and allow all J/class to leave first.
Had one or two try and push past, I just put on my “please don’t” face.

First time I've see the "specialty" counter actually operating at BNE Dom J Lounge.

Was also NP leaves which I happily avoided.

Still think they'd be better to make pizza like they do at PER Dom J.
Mhm, looks quite yummy though I agree with the pizza- they should just offer that in all the Domestic lounges!

I think the Mexican theme was abandoned pre covid.
Yep, it used to be and I quite liked it, shame it's gone now. My recent ones had been pasta dishes similar to the above, once (very strangely) chicken wings and last time they had a loaded jacked potato which was tasty but a bit too carby for my liking:

Any pics of the new menu?

Sorry no pics of the food. Had the kids with me and it was all happening at meal times.

I had the chicken skewers, the pork and then the mango mousse.

The chicken skewers were fantastic, definitely recommend, the pork was ok, not bad, but nothing special, and the mango mousse to finish was really enjoyable. My son had the ice cream sandwich which was nice but sickly sweet - no way I could have eaten the whole thing, but he loved it.

I dunno maybe it’s just me but I’m finding the QF domestic options are better / more edible than than the international. Even in F my recent experiences have been dismal / inedible / luke warm to cold whereas domestic at least the meal is hot.

Really? You must have had bad luck. I’ve found my recent experiences on QF International (proper long haul, not NZ which these days is almost identical to Domestic) to be rather excellent.

Domestic? The usual so so that we had for years now (plus the soup option being back). Sometimes meh, sometimes quite good, sometimes awful.
