Seriously- toastie or soup, THAT's all which you get offered on that long red eye across the entire country? Some of Qantas' choices really boggle my mind, even though that pea soup is quite tasty. As a starter, that is!

I also expected a cafe service (e.g. muffin and coffee) prior to landing but Nada. They have really cut back on the red eye service.

Hi Berlin. I was on a red eye MEL-AKL (QF155) back in April'23 and was offered similar choices on that flight as well. The three choices on offer that night were Chicken creamed corn soup, Cheese toastie and cheese platter. I have to say that I was feeling rather disappointed with the choices on offer that night. Glad that I had a heavy meal at MEL QF First lounge before I boarded my flight.

At least you came FROM Australia and hence could enjoy the Flounge. Still- not good enough in my eyes, wether they call it "supper" or whatever. At least offer a choice that includes one or two substantial options.

Recent YVR and only posting as I very briefly saw the menu and went with usual options expecting the humpty doo with rice and boi Choi etc to receive a different fish dish.

It looks quite small but after a big feed in F and a relatively late departure you don’t want much more. Quite enjoyed the fresh veggies rather than a big stodgy meal. As someone that doesn’t get many home cooked meals I quite like this sort of catering.

The rest of the meal was your usual suspects under starters and mains.

I know what I’m having next week if that’s still on the menu!

What meal could I expect MEL SYD QF474 leaving at 5.30pm? Usually eat early anyway and wonder whether the offering would suffice for an evening meal, or should I fill up in the lounge prior?
Thanks, in advance

5.30pm is classified as dinner, so I believe should be at least two hot options and a salad? Possibly one of the hot options will be soup.

I flew QF470 on the weekend (leaving at 5pm), and they had chicken and corn soup, veal ravioli, or the ubiquitous chicken waldorf salad.

You can expect a dinner service as above, but for me it's a pretty easy strategy - eat things you like in the lounge (perhaps spice bar goodness) and that way if the offering onboard is not desireable then you're already had food. If there's something you might like, then you can eat (some/all) of that, or perhaps choose a lighter option - like the soup.

I don't see this as an either/or situation. If you have time prior though I'd definitely eat in the J lounge only as a known quantity - and more options - and you're not relying on a meal or option that may not be available or not something you desire when on board.

PER to MEL lunch. Options were kung po chicken, massaman beef curry or some salad thing I paid no attention to. I went the curry and all round was a very decent meal. Beef was a good sized slow cooked piece which was nice and tender. Good flavours. Salad was excellent too. No PDB other than a bottle of water on the seat.

DFW - MEL QF22 9pm departure.

Here is the menu:

Started with the Niçoise salad - it was actually really good, so was the bread.

It was also nice to see an 'upgraded' antipasto side salad instead of Neil's leaves.

Then I went with the beef fillet which was horrible.

And finally, the blueberry crumble which was burnt to a crisp by the galley operator and completely inedible.

Forgot to take pictures of the breakfast but it was pretty standard. I had scrambled eggs and everything was stone cold. I sent it back and the crew member apologised and replaced it with another equally cold dish.

All in all, a pretty average meal on a 17.5 hour flight (except for the Nicoise which was great).

It is quite shocking to see that you were served the burnt blueberry crumbles which should not be served in the first place. I personally think that what they should have at least done is to offer you a non-burnt blueberry crumbles or if all the blueberry crumbles are burnt, they should just offer you an alternative dessert.

I love burnt food from time to time but even that looks beyond what I’d happily eat. Sounds like you just got got a bad flight unfortunately.
Haven’t flown QFi recently but I must say in the last few months I’ve found that QFd food has improved a bit and is mostly ok

I think it could also be ex US catering.
