We are flying to Bali in August. A trip to F Lounge in Melbourne for a sweet four hours transit from Adelaide. Husband has been warned to eat up in the lounge and expect to be disinterested in the food offering onboard. (He learnt this the hard way, but twice. Last time on the trip to Bali he didn't eat in F Lounge Sydney and they only served toasted Sanger in J to Bali, then more recently, not Qantas but MH, I ate in the lounge so went straight to sleep - but on a 7 hour flight the only meal offered, two Hours before arrival, was breakfast. He was hangry. 🫢)
Thanks for sharing, Pushka. From my past experience on MH red-eye flights from SYD/MEL-KUL, satay service with items on the 'Dine Anytime' menu were offered after take off and a full breakfast service 1.5-2 hours before landing into KUL. Did you and your husband not receive that on your flight the other day?

We didn’t receive any dinner service from KL to Adelaide but they could offer satays. No Dine Anytime at all. Just a breakfast served over two hours before arrival but they refused to serve hot drinks as the seat belt sign was on. It was on most of the flight. It wasn’t bumpy. Just convenience. Not a good crew at all.
 
QF 12 LAX-SYD on the A380:

Once again, truly lovely Qantas flight though service maybe not quite as warm and attentive as on the 787 two weeks earlier. Maybe this has to do with the bigger cabin that seemed to make the crew work harder but interact less with passengers? I'm not sure- generally, I still prefer the big bird and also greatly appreciate the fact that the crew can't lock down the window for the entire flight as they've done on the SYD-DFW route, very much to my chagrin.

Menu was fairly standard and I actually didn't mind the reduced supper service as the food in the LAX First lounge was so good. Pre-ordered the haloumi sandwich for breakfast and then selected the steak followed by the cheese platter. While there wasn't any drinks proactively offered right after take off, I asked for a Bloody Mary and my wish was happily granted. Likewise, I scribbled "Champagne please" onto the breakfast order card and it was served with no issues.

The steak was, as ever so often, a bit too well done but the amount of sauce made up for it. Also, the potato gratin thing on the side was creamy and cheesy so the meal overall wasn't too dry. I also like how Qantas plates those meals in the galley which makes for such a much nicer presentation and avoids the dreaded vegetable juice all over the plate (like on Domestic flights or airlines such as AA which just heat the whole thing on one plate, even in Business Class).

The cheese plate was a bit of a downer- while the cheeses seemed nice in quality, the crew must have left the plates standing outside in the dry airplane air for too long so all three pieces were dried in on the sides which wasn't very pleasant. A real shame, actually.

In the middle of the flight, I was hoping for one of those great Chicken Schnitzel sandwiches but alas, they were already all gone which surprised me as most of the cabin seemed to be fast asleep. Only snack left was the "savoury french toast" which was more of a quiche and nothing to write home about:

Finally, the breakfast which I really enjoyed. The haloumi sandwich was a bit different from the usual bacon and eggs and nicely done with the herbed Tahini dressing, very yummy. And Haloumi is one of the few meat replacement that this extreme carnivore happily accepts. So why not start the day with a veggie dish? 😛

All in all a nice flight and good to be back on QF International. One thing I have to mention as I absolutely hate it: Why the heck is Qantas thinking that hot towels don't matter? They used to have them and now even on a 14 hour flights, nothing in sight. They're cheap, easy to do, and one of those special delights on an airplane. If AA can do them (and Finnair bothers on every single short haul flight inner Europe), then surely you can at least once bring out those lovely towels!

As I've mentioned elsewhere, given the service and seat quality, I'd happily pay a premium to fly Qantas over some of the competitors but that's capped at around 1000 to 1500 bucks on a J class ticket and unfortunately, often the difference is even bigger which is then just too much to ask in my eyes. So if I get the chance (like here on this AA ticket), then I'll happily grab it!

Yeah, I would tell anyone flying to DPS to load up in the lounge too :) Both due to the length of flight and likely offerings. That'll learn him for sure :D you'd always want a freshly cooked meal on the ground anyway imo - specially with the Flounge (J not so much, but still probably better than a toastie!)

It's definitely clear QF treat a route like DPS as full leisure so don't bother a heck of a lot in J (as opposed to say SIN).

OT a bit, but was MH post covid? I last flew them in 2019, but took the redeye out of MEL to KUL, and had a meal service post take off. Not huge, but definitely a service, certainly more am emphasis on the brekky prior to arrival of course (great Nasi Lemak). Perhaps they've slimmed down the offering?

Yep. MH was in June - 8 weeks ago. Flight out of Oz was good. Flight back 👎🏻
 
Lunch on QF119 BNE-AKL last week. It was some chicken dish - I give it a B. Not sure what the side was.

But I give the Maggie Beer ice cream an A+. Wasn't that soft but not that hard you have to wait to be able to eat it.

It is actually really yummy and as you say, a bit different for a change. Maybe a little bit too carb-y with the bread on both sides so I'd definitely not have a toast or croissant WITH it!

I enjoyed the muesli with a mimosa (interestingly they only had full size bottles of sparkling wine and not the minis so FA was reluctant to open a bottle for one glass but the Lord took one for the team and also had a mimosa and we promised to have a second one also 🤣)
The lord had the omelette option
We both enjoyed, but neither of us were overly hungry so only had the main part of the meal

I have a breakfast flight soon and will absolutely be on the mimosas! The FA shouldn’t bat an eyelid if someone asks for one, let alone be hesitant to pop a bottle.

I assume there's a typo there in the flight number?

The presentation looks like something I'd do at home (no recommendation). Have had far better on non-USA route competitors.
 
I have a breakfast flight soon and will absolutely be on the mimosas! The FA shouldn’t bat an eyelid if someone asks for one, let alone be hesitant to pop a bottle.

I noticed the small bottles disappeared a little while ago so I feel a pang of guilt now asking for a sparkling. Haven't had any FAs be hesitant about opening one though, even on a MEL/SYD-CBR.
 
Doing CBR-MEL Wednesday next week 0600 departure. Any idea what to expect for brekkie? As I'm a vego (can't even have eggs) contemplating if I need to pre-order? Although it's only a 40 minute flight ...

QF1953 - DRW-ADL
SDT: 1815 - FT: 03:45

We left on time and had made up quite a lot of time in the air but were delayed into ADL waiting for a medical emergency on another aircraft. Still landed on time. No PDB but the pre dinner drink was offered quickly after take off.

3 options - Ginger and sesame chicken with hokkien noodles, mushroom pasta or dukkah crusted pumpkin salad. J was 5/9. I was in 2A and the couple in row 1 were served first. They both chose the chicken and when the CSM got to me she skipped over the 1st option and just offered the two vego dishes. My heart sank a little before she added we also have the chicken but it just needs to heat up so it will be about 20 minutes. I was happy to wait. As were the other two in row 3 so we all had the chicken. It was pretty tasty actually and the sauce went down a great on the bread. It came with a Japanese salad with a prawn, bread, butter, a very sweet chocolate, cheese and crackers. Ice cream came about an hour before landing.

The CSM was lovely if a little robotic at times. We had a few chats and turns out she was the crew manager for alliance in ADL which I suppose explains why the service felt so by the book. She did however, very strictly, enforce the J bathroom at all times. Sent back around 10 over the flight. Very impressed.
