Qantas Business Class customers bumped to economy in Tokyo

I am going against the consensus here as there is not enough detail in OP. There is no indication that the original fare was on QF J, all QF/JQ flights from Japan are overnight and there is no indication that it was a J fare on QF80. Most have just assumed this. In 30+ years of traveling with QF I have never been downgraded past the original booking class. I have been complimentary downgraded from complimentary upgrades or been downgraded from points upgraded but the points have been returned.

The OP stated they would not fly QF J and to my first point there it little detail if they were travelling on a J,D,I or U in the first place. What some consider to be not be cheap may have a very different meaning to others.

Reports of Qantas downgrading pax are not rare.

The OP states 'Qantas' is behaving like jetstar - not JAL behaving like jetstar.

I think it's a fair assumption that the pax were booked in J and donwgraded to Y. Possibly they were on one of the $3500 'specials' to Japan.

You seem to be off topic or did not understand my post correctly.

Your first sentence - I did not question or state down grading was not a rare occurrence, rather in 30+ years of travelling with QF I have not experienced this on a paid flight.

Your second sentence - I did not mention JAL, my post only mentions QF/JQ not JL

Your third sentence - I have travelled on AU-JP discount J fares in the $3500-3800 price bracket and to my point I am yet to be downgraded.

Have a few views on this (hears collective "sigh" :) )

Yes, on AFF we often suffer "one=post wonders" inevitably a whinge....

But at the same time I understand that if someone actually DID get bumped J to Y then that is really and truly a poke in the eye that would have any of us seething - and for a non-contributor type probably would push them over the edge to actually POST :) Perhaps a single post without followup could actually speak heaps about just how upset they are.

On another level I love the banter such a post induces - given no real facts or specifics it allows each of us to indulge in unchecked personal crusades - either in pro or con of the given airline :)

I suspect that the OP is genuine in this case, but the lack of detail of what the overt circumstances are, or what QF actually offerred in the case, are completely unknown.

Am with Matt in that I have never sufferred a downgrade that I recall with QF. Have had one or two with other carriers in about 1000 flights - so this is a rare beasty, despite the hype (understandably) that the rare cases incite.

Qantas is now behaving like Jetstar. We were just bumped down to economy for overnite flight from Tokyo to Melbourne. Ticket paid and booked 7 months earlier, discounted but still not cheap!
As only Bronze status we got bumped.
Will definitely never fly Qantas business again!

Janet, we hear your pain, and we also understand that it feels a teensy bit better to have vented after such a hideous experience.

But if you want more than just commiserations, then give a bit more detail on what actually happenned. AFF members are very eager to help with advice and experience! I suspect you know that as your use of terminology suggests that you are either a frequent flyer or an adept reader of this forum. :)

We were downgraded from paid F on Qantas to J (two of us) in 2015. After a hour on the phone (from Italy to Sydney) I got our flights shifted from SFO-lax-Syd, to SFO-dfw-Syd so we retained F. We also had 3 weeks warning of the downgrade and we were Platinum so time and status allowed us to sort it out. We had to offer the solution though - Qantas were just saying no F available that day and only looking at flights out of Lax.

I was thinking that as far as a flight to be downgraded ....Tokyo to Melbourne not so bad
However I am fat and I am, and the person sitting next to me , comfortable in business or PE.
Economy would stress the living daylights out of me , that would be a very uncomfortable flight for me
I have had a comfort seat cancelled on my return home flight lax to Syd (long stupid story and yes basically Qantas fault ) and I was very very upset.
So I can understand being peeved at being downgraded even from my point of view
Though OP I do have to say it didn't put me off Qantas . I still currently fly with them

OP must still be recovering. Waiting for her to re-enter the building.

How are they behaving like Jetstar? Plenty of reports of Qantas doing this, and has been goi8ng on for years. The challenge is really in getting adequate compensation.

Oddly, I don't think I have read of a case of Jetstar doing this....

Out of interest while we wait for potential further information, if the OP bought a J ticket a long time ago and the aircraft has stayed the same as scheduled, and the cabin become full (or possibly slightly oversold), wouldn't QF stop selling J to that flight? So, what factors would lead to them downgrading a confirmed ticket (passenger)?

There are 2 different configurations for the A330 in J, 27J or 28J. The other issue that may be at hand is a seat (or seats) that becomes inoperable which results in the cabin becoming oversold.

Peeved. Hell, I would be in ugly, angry, sobbing tears and yes, would delay to another flight. Im not performing surgery so as long as I have wifi, I can work anywhere.

Perhaps the fact that both Matt and yourself are P1 would explain your collective lack of downgrades from QF. Presumably it's many years since either of you were bronze

Fair comment. Just to clarify I have been down graded on 1-2 domestic connections from delayed international arrivals and 1-2 times when I had been upgraded to F then sent back due J due to delays and cancellations, I assume that QF were re-routing paid F class and I can understand this. I stand by my comments that I have not been down graded past the original fare class booked.

Yes it has been many years since I was bronze and there will come a time when I am no longer a P1 and when I fall back back down the greasy pole I am sure I will get annoyed at how QF treat me.

Coming up to 48 hours and nothing more from OP.

I note OP didn't join recently just to post a singular complaint.

However this is the way many forums are designed, you need to sign up just to get a decent look and then you decide if you stay or not. Some forums do not let you cancel your account. When I signed up to AFF I did not think I would actually start posting stuff. Prior to AFF I signed up to AusBT, flyertalk but rarely contribute and still have active accounts.
