Qantas applying for capacity to fly to Fiji

Having lived, studied and worked in Fiji, I find this to be great news!

However; I don’t think the Fiji Government would be too pleased with this (With regards to Qantas oneworld connect partner Fiji Airways).

As someone who knows next to nothing about the Fijian government/economy, would you mind explaining why you think this?

It's only 4 departures per week vs the existing 18 on FJ, 8 VA, and 4 JQ.

Keep in mind...
  • QF own 46% of FJ.
  • FJ have maxed out their capacity into Australia.

Interesting to note that the application says the capacity may be utilised by Qantas or another Qantas Group airline. Does this mean the extra capacity might just be used by Jetstar?

QF adds that condition with all their filings so they don't have to refile if they transfer seats between JQ and themselves. In regards to this particular application, it explicitly says "Qantas plans to commence services between Australia and Fiji route using B737 aircraft."

Who cares what Fiji thinks...

Passenger rights are negotiated between the governments of Australia and Fiji. This is done at the national level and does not directly involve the airlines. The seats available for each country were recently increased by 20%, up from 6500/w (so I guess that’s 7800/w).

The Australian government is then responsible for allocating the seats to the Australian airlines, and that is what Qantas are asking for here. The government of Fiji don’t get a say on whether Qantas can fly the route, as long as the seats used by all Australian airlines remain under the limit agreed.

Just sighted QF selling flights from early Apr SYD-NAN x 4 per week on Tue/Fri/Sat/Sun. Ops as 738 aircraft . Sale fares avail in both cabins.
$269 ow in ecy and $1042 in J.
good smattering of U avail also which is nice in a holiday period

Does this mean the FJ lounge might finally open its doors again to QF Club member

I'll be on the inaugural QF101 SYD-NAN on Sun 31st March 2019! :)

Goodness, I'd forgotten that there were other cities in Australia than the teddibly self-important Sydney.

And forgotten that corporations are free to structure their services to serve the free market. I'm sure if the demand is greater from other cities other airlines will step in.

Exactly, it’s usually QF’s approach to dipstick Sydney first, build a business up, check connecting flow of traffic and then launch secondary cities. They’ve been burned by thoughtless expansion of QFi before and are now more considered (albeit slow for us punters). They did the same with Bali flights etc, return of QFd to OOL, list goes on...
