SYDNEY, 12 March 2008: Qantas announced today it would commence its first ever non-stop services to South America, with flights from Sydney to Buenos Aires* commencing on 24 November, 2008.

Qantas Executive General Manager, Mr John Borghetti, said the airline would operate three return services per week on the route.

"Qantas previously offered one-stop services to Buenos Aires, via Auckland, between 1998 and 2002.

"We have maintained services to South America via our successful codeshare with LAN since then, and this relationship will continue. LAN Argentina is also planning to codeshare on Qantas' new Buenos Aires flights," Mr Borghetti said.

"Qantas' new services will also offer passengers connections to other destinations in South America, including Brazil.

"These network developments will enable us to grow business and leisure travel to and from Argentina and strengthen tourism and trade links between Australia and South America."

Qantas will operate its new services with B747-400 aircraft on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Hopefully a big enough D inventory to use on a OWE or Circle Pacific itinerary. At least giving me more choices.

As this is a direct quote from a media release, I am moving it to the "Travel Articles" forum. Please follow the story there.

I take it that this implies some confidence that the Big Bird flying around France in camoflauge paint job will be delivered on schedule

I believe that is the current expectation.

As a 747-400 service I assume it will include F class
Not all QF 747-400s are 3-class configs. Howver, as this service seems to be times to commence after the introduction of the A380, I would assume the 747-400 that is freed up by the A380 service entry will be a 3-class config and hence this new EZE service will be 3-class. But that is just an assumption and may not be the case.

Schedule:

SYD-EZE QF17 MON/WED/SAT 1035/1035
EZE-SYD QF18 MON/WED/SAT 1405/1745+1

Plenty of A/D availability. For now anyway.

Great news! Now I need to find a reason to visit Buenos Aires:) A work related conference would be perfect;) Ever since I visited Rio 3 yeras back, I have been very keen to revisit Sth America!

¡Que buenas noticias! ¡Me encanta la idea de vuelos directos de Sydney a Buenos Aires!

I love the idea of a non-stop Sydney - BsAs flight. Having done the Sydney - Auckland - Santiago - Buenos Aires hop (20 hours) a few times, the thought of getting on in Sydney, and getting off in Buenos Aires, only 13 hours later, is a dream.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I can't work out the points required for an award on this flight.

If I look via the calculator, it forces me to go SYD-Buenos Aires-Santiago-Sydney.

Why thru Santiago?

I guess it due the Award calculator being behind the times - not recognizing the SYD-EZE flights, instead putting you onto the SCL codeshare.

Try the online award engine - doing a dummy booking.

I just did this - the calculator send to to SCL on the QF codeshare and to EZE on a LAN flight - the two trip (Change in carrier) one way cost is 56,000 + 14,000

making 70,000

.

Doing a dummy booking gives PER-SYD-(QF17)-EZE for a cost of 56,000

Hopefully I will get to use this service  I start a new job over in Brazil, I will be flying out a few days before December 8th. I get to decide what day and time I fly over there, I'm assuming this is the best option to get to Rio? Perfect timing.. I am flying out of Melbourne. I will be doing this trip return 5-6 times a year, I will make sure I join the Qantas FF program.
