On a flight back from CBR to MEL yesterday, on a 717, I was speaking with the CSM and it was mentioned that they are looking forward to getting the A220. One of the things that was of great interest was the mention of starting international routes from the likes of Canberra and Adelaide to Asia.

What routes do you think would be good for this?

Do you think this is going to happen?

Does anyone have any insight into the use of the A220?

Qantas international into Adelaide? Nah. Ya dreamin.

That CSM may be waiting a long time for their international tour of duty.

The A220s are designed to replace the 717s, and Qantas hasn't even ordered enough A220s to replace all the 717s. They're expecting to cover the shortfall with leased E190s.

So there are likely to be very few new routes with the A220s.

As is usually the case with Qantas, all marketing spin and no substance.

Surprisingly the A220 does seem to have the range (listed as 3450miles for -100 and 3400 for -300) so could do routes from say PER or DRW. I dunno if they'd want to though. ADL-SIN would be RIGHT on the limit tbh.

tbh these are the missions for the A321XLR rather than the smaller A220 imo.

Hopefully the 220 will be a nice step up from the 717 regardless (and maybe also the E-jets operated by Alliance etc, though the addition of a middle seat might be irksome). DL flyers in the US seem very happy with the Y experience compared to the 717s (though F is perhaps slightly worse given you have 2-2 on an aircraft only wide enough for 2-3 in Y)

I’m flying BOS-AUS on a 220 this week, which is blocked at 4h20m.

The A220s could only get to most of Indonesia, Timor-Leste and New Guiana from CBR. From ADL, they can't get much more then SIN.
They might do A220 flights to New Zealand from CBR/ADL, I can't see them going to Asia. Assuming they even got enough aircraft to do so.

An A220-300 (or -500 if launched and bought) could do ADL/PER/DRW/CNS-KUL; PER/DRW/CNS/ADL/CBR-SIN; PER/DRW/CNS-BKK; DRW/CNS-HKG; PER/DRW/CNS/CBR/ADL-MNL.

But that's not why QF are getting the A220 (initially anyway).

AC fly YYZ/YUL-SEA and BT fly GYD-RIX all are 5-5:30hr on the A220-300.

Coo, narrow body on a plane from Aust to SIN, now that is real cheapo now.
Real cheapskate.
Aust - NZ on a narrow body plane, maybe in J, but to SIN cooped up in a narrow body down the back in discY, coo, that will be a pain ful experience.
Esp row DEF.

Re: Pushka's reply, QF's frenemy, ie, AirNZ and QR already do the job, not sure if QF is ever interested in bringing int flights into or out of ADL again.
They (QF) are saving a lot by not flying int flight into or out of ADL, not paying AAL the fees for wide body planes on a regular basis, less catering on the narrow body, less wear and tear of the AAL terminal that QF would have to pay for, no X scissor lift lease charges, ...
Not counting QF's 2nd cousin ie, JQ flying ADL - DPS, that is also already el cheapo.

They had 20 717s. They had firm orders for 20 A220s.

DRW-SIN on an A220 could be a possibility.

I'd expect to see an A321XLR on a route like ADL-SIN before seeing an A220.
