So rather than criticising Qantas for its involvement in price-gouging, you lay blame at Lufthansa for exposing it? I know alot of posters are of the view that Qantas can do no wrong (except when it comes to program "enhancements" that actually affect alot of the ppl on here) but even Qantas admitted their fault on this one and pleaded guilty. Why do you think it would have been a better outcome if Lufthansa kept quiet and the price-gouging continued?

As for the OP, some ideas might be a little outlandish, but I do agree that Qantas is just a company that looks after its own interests and its own bottom line above all else - as is its right of course - which can tend to be obfuscated by this "national carrier" concept and the idea that it is unpatriotic to criticise Qantas.



Not all all Egg. Someone had to "break the bank", so to speak. But, it looks like LH got a pass from exposing the scam. LH still should have been forced to pay some kind of fine IMO. LH might have been more involved in the whole affair more than QF, but we'll never know.

QF paid the fine and moved on. There is no mention of the other airlines fines in roego's post and as far as l can tell, this happened back in 2008? (please feel free to correct me)

The OP says that the QF board should be sacked, so does that also imply that the board of all the other airlines involved should also get the sack? Sounds to me like the OP has an axe to grind with QF, but no mention of the others involved.

Why is not the Government doing something about the price fixing rorts on freight..Qantas fined millions in USA and officer goes to jail. Fined millions for same in Australia and now millions more in Europe.

How come Joyce and his board members are not being disciplined. How can you believe them? did this all happen without the knowledge of the Board and CEO? If it did they should resign on grounds of incompentency. If they knew about it they should resign on grounds of unconcionable behaviour.

True.. QF is always the first to lend a plane or 2 when required to get people home or out of danger.

It's cultural too. LH transporting the Berlin Philharmonic at the moment. QF transporting the Comm Games team a few months ago.

I don't know the full circumstances, but my understanding was that Lufthansa got caught and then dobbed in everyone to reduce their own penalty. Not that Lufthansa exposed the price fixing. So not a case, of lufthansa keeping quiet and the price fixing continuing.

Anyway, it still remains that the government has not sat on it's hands because qantas is the national carrier. Qantas has been dealt with under the current laws. The OP might not think that is good enough, but that is a problem with the law, not something to blame Qantas about.

But I would pick up the disciplining of the board suggestion and ask who would do that? Who would sack the board? Because the board are the ones that control the company. Should they give themselves a very firm smack?

The gouging lasted from 1999 to 2006 and fines were just handed down the other day. IT could be noted that 11 airlines paid the fines and another airlines got away with no fines and were not named, could be Virgin Blue, we’d never know. Though I doubt it.

I do not believe QF is a disgrace by any stretch of the imagination although their standard of service has lowered in recent years.

Can the shareholders of Qantas sack the Board, outside of an AGM, and removing access of the Board to the golden condoms in their contracts? That might be one way to suitably penalize those Directors who were getting rich from the illegal actions.

The shareholders appoint the Board and the Board in turn appoints a CEO. Theoretically it is correct, they can but with shareholding dilutions being what they are at QF it would be hard to coordinate.

A good question despite the practical issues.

Theoretically possible. Practically you need to get the agreement of the biggest shareholders. Those who have invested a lot of money and therefore have a vested interest in maintaining order and confidence in the company and it's shareprice. Hence would be extremely unlikely to cause a full scale rout.

Notable recent example was a director of NAB trying to do over the chairman. Seemed to have good reasons for it. But the director is the one that left.

They could, but bear in mind that there has been a bit of a turnover in the ranks of the board since these events occured. As I understand, one of the reasons for the Qantas fine being smaller than other airlines was an early admission of guilt by the airline.
