Qantas 747s to fly Perth-Sydney

Might be the only chance they get to talk uninterrupted by life for 8-14 hours, did you and your dad both have windows on your big trip ;)?
Luckily my father is very relaxed and likes window seats while my preference is aisle. There is no way my father would want me inconvenienced and he even told me if you get offered an upgrade take it as he does not mind sitting alone.

Most of our flights we managed to sit in the 2 seats with only aisle and window. On one domestic AA flight on 737 we chose C & D aisle and I made a mistake on the BA 747 in bulkhead where I had aisle and he had middle seat while a tiny female sat in the window seat. Dad did have a few words to me on why I chose those seats and I apologised. Should have allocated aisle and window and who cares if someone sat in the middle seat.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
The thing I found most frustrating about them was the way they flooded the, already too small, Perth terminal. They were often scheduled around the same time that other large, wide-body planes were leaving and it was just a debacle. The terminal is simply too small to handle the load that is being placed on it and the use of even larger planes just makes it all the more worse.

You know you can both sit in a window seat.

I guess I will never understand why 2 people who spend so much time together need to sit next to each other on a flight. Can't bear to be apart for a few hours? Much better to be apart for a few hours than expect one of you to make a sacrifice.

Ah, the unknowing musings of the single man.

In the paper today big ad for this with a picture of a guy on a skybed wearing QF PJ's.... Are they going to start handing them out? Also they say no more red-eye... but the flight from PER leaves at 1435 and arrives in SYD at 2020... When are they going to ramp up the services?

According to this article, yes:
"QF CEO Alan Joyce said the changes were a direct response to the growing demand for travel to Perth, particularly from business passengers. “Increasing the premium service we provide business customers flying from east to west will help further cement our position as the ‘Best for Business’ airline,” said Joyce, who noted that passengers in both cabins of the 747 between Perth and Sydney “will experience Qantas’ globally renowned international service [emphasis added].”
To me, that means all the fruit of an international flight, including amenity kits (in both classes).

I (also a single man) don't see the issue. Travelling to Europe in a few weeks with a friend. He wants Window, I want Aisle We've taken a punt and booked a Window for him and an Aisle for me, hoping the middle seat stays empty (not on QF).

If someone is seated there, we'll both cope.

If we want to chat, we can get up and walk around or something. It's no big deal for me (nor him)!

And happily single.

If I am going to travel with someone then they need to be aware that I will only travel in an aisle seat or if they really want to twist my arm I would accept a window seat. End of story. It cannot be any simpler....

I think that's being very optimistic.

When they say 'international standard' of service it may just mean international standard meals, cutlery and (again optimistically) hard product. (Mind you, the meals thing is supposed to be happening now; whether it is or not is another story).

I wouldn't mind if they offered these items on a red-eye (although they are fairly short flights due to tailwind! In addition, we probably won't see the big birds doing these until the capacity really does get to that point, which with DJ on the route will be unlikely).

seems only WP's can preselect the PE seats. Maybe a T-80 the others get a chance as well. Wouldn't mind a PE seat on these flights.

Just to clarify what it seems to me you've said.

Only WP can pre-select the PE section on these flights. Your avatar states SG (which I am too), so just wanting to confirm we can't (as SG) select PE seats on the 744 operated flights?

That's dissapointing.... would be really good for an economy fare.

jakob.

When looking as a SG there appears to be one vacant PE seat (32D) all the rest blocked. If I then look with a WP card (colleague's card) I can see he can see all seats as available...
Would be a huge plus if SG could pre-select these as well.

Sorry to dash hopes, but J class seating won't be available as it will be full of crew, who will be operating the return leg...:D

Have a JASA booked PER-BNE in September. After reading this thread I thought I might check my booking to see if I could change from the 763 to a new bird, only to discover that QF650 on the date I am travelling now takes 5 mins longer and is operated by a A332!

The booking had a big orange banner telling me "your flight has changed, either confirm or call QF". Same flight number, same departure time, same seat numbers (although row 5 is no longer the last row of J) and only 5 mins longer flight time, to the untrained eye it looks like nothing had changed.

G'day everyone. Just joined the forum!:)

I have the same message banner on my PER - SYD booking first week July. I had booked QF582 departing 14:30 on a QFF award booking for myself and family.
This flight was originally an A332 and now I see the flight now dep and arr 5 mins later and has now been switched to a B763!:(

This is the 2nd change to the flight details since I booked and I especially selected this flight as the we preferred the A332 over the B763.

Checking on my travel date the A332 now departs at 12:20 as QF580 and there is no new B744 service at all on Saturday.

What are my chances of very nicely asking Qantas to move us to the earlier flight (hopefully without charge)?

Cheers,

Welcome to AFF, I would recommend you call QF and explain that the change is what you have been trying to avoid, and let us know how you go!

I have flown 747 SYD to BNE international flight and SYD ADL.Jetstar 330
Bit of a pain going through customs - long delays in ADL. BNE excellent straight through only a few bags at pickup.

But It was more comfortable to travel with that configuration.

Can they use the domestic terminal in SYD for 747's?

Can they use the domestic terminal in SYD for 747's?

Sure can, they used to fly 747's from SYD-PER (and MEL-PER) multiple times a day, and always from Dom terminals.

They where always my a/c of choice and was quite disappointed when they took the 743's off the route. Me thinks I'll be looking for excuses to go to PER in the near future... :D

Has anyone got an update on the 747 configuration being used for these services, specifically in relation to P.E. seating.

I had been waiting for Virgin to go to market with their plans to see if I could be enticed to book, however, with the Qantas sale (that ends tonight) for $179 one way, if I can sit in P.E. seat with Y service (as a WP) I will be making multiple purchases this evening.

However, when I look at Expert Flyer, the seat maps all seem to show 2 class 747 layouts. i.e. economy starts at row 26 ABC DEFG HJK and beyond (so not P.E. 747s)?

Earlier in this thread, seat map images were posted showing Y starting at row 29 AB DEFG JK (i.e. P.E. seats) but I can't seem to replicate this on Expert Flyer at the moment. Can someone who has booked one of these flights, please log into the QF website and check their seat allocation is still a P.E. seat (and if so, which day(s) are the flights)? thanks.

Flight equipment with the 744 is likely to be highly variable, I doubt you will be able to lock down a daily routine when F or PE seats are on offer, especially since QF are still to decide how they will cut further capacity as stated in recent days.

As an update, I just did a BNE-KTA JASA, including QF 581/582 for SYD-PER-SYD.

The aircraft was OJD, and as I'm sure many here would know, it's without the new 3 class PE config. I believe this aircraft is now solely deployed on this sector.

No pyjamas were offered, nor were menus. The meal service wasn't to full international J standard either. As an example the mains arrived in the standard ceramic dish, rather than being plated in the galley.

Having said this, the 4 hr 30 min outbound to PER went by very quickly.........
