I’m more of a traveller than a model plane hobbyist, so am seeking information on Qantas 747 model planes.....what’s available? What’s recommended? Why a particular plane number is historically significant? Please inform (me) to help me give a great Christmas / birthday present.

Ebay.
A lot of them these days are modern plastic, so can break quite easily.
Hard to find those long lasting metal ones, that used to be more prevalent in the 1970s.
Have a look at that site anyway.
There are also other websites, google is your friend.
Prices vary.
Model size tends to 400:1.
As for model #, or plane #, I don't know.
VH fleet alphabets, can be harder to find.
There could be a great demand for them, so be prepared to pay a higher price.
You can find most planes on stands, or on the ground, not in the air sort of impression.

Thanks for your advice

I was already bamboozled by eBay before coming on here.

I’m guessing resin is like reinforced plastic.

Being a specialised gift I’m prepared for a higher price

Well... it's kind of like asking for a recommendation for a bottle of wine.

Like wine, models come in all shapes and sizes and costs to match. Some are made well, some not so good. Give a bad model to an enthusiast and unfortunately it's not a case of 'it's the thought that counts'. The biggest issue with bad models is lack of attention to detail and scale... for example coughpit windows out of size compared to the rest of the plane, or they have extra windows, etc.

Size of the model may be important... the tiny ones, usually metal are 1/400 scale. These are quite small and come fully assembled. The next size up are often plastic ones, often on stands, and snap together, and are 1/200. Those are usually a bit cheaper. Then you start go up in price and to resin models in the 1/100 scale. It's not uncommon for a collector to collect mainly one size.

There are some special edition plane models featuring special liveries. Maybe those have specific plane numbers, but I've never checked. One of the big manufacturers of models is Herpa: Herpa Wings 1/200 - Aircraft Model Store - but there are several others.
