The "coasters" are great in streamlining the domestic bag drop. It's a pity to see that being "enhanced" to zero.

Yep still fit for train and bus daily home to school/construction site commuting purposes. Since it is purely for aesthetic purposes when taking the bus/train. No use wearing a gold bag tag on the ground (also blends with the orange yellow shirt)

I just received my order for a replacement bag tag in the mail - I've been WP for many years but all they could muster to send me was a PS bag tag. I daresay they've scraped the bottom of the barrel for the final time. So long, bag tags!

There's an article on Executive Traveler about this now. They keep (maybe on purpose) conflating the new bag tracking app function to the legacy tags with RFID.

The two technologies are complementary - one lets you avoid the need to manually print out a paper/plastic bag tag and the other lets you track your bags after it's checked in.

That tech’s effectively been made redundant since Qantas introduced app-based luggage tracking across domestic and international Qantas flights.

But I suspect Hermès hasn’t gone down the “recycled materials” path just yet! Just tried and tested dead cow skin. Oh, that reminds my, I have lovely Starlux leather bag tag somewhere - possibly still in its original box.

The article suggests they are - well sort of. P1 within a few weeks, others if they requal their tier. But they have a choice between bagtag or freebie leaf towards GT.

One made it simple to drop off luggage, the other does nothing but tell you the time you checked in your bag.

Qantas says most frequent flyers have been using the Q Bag Tags for carry-on luggage (which honestly serves only to flag or perhaps flaunt their status) so the new tags have been designed for hand luggage and cabin bags.

“The new luggage tags will help our teams to spot our valued members, recognise their continued loyalty and deliver that signature Qantas service,” a Qantas spokesperson tells Executive Traveller.

Absolutely agree with this and at least QF are (in theory) embrasing this.

While sure, I am sure many have used the coasters as intended, I often see MANY on carry ons (mostly Gold and Plat) that screams "look at moi" imo. I sometimes see them outside of travel situations too (like people in J PJ tops at woolies lol).

I doubt I will attach mine when it shows up (though the P1 one does look nice) as I have no "DYKWIA mode" or wish to stand out tbh.

But that's just me.

I don't understand this though. Qantas could still keep the RFID, people could still put them on their hand luggage and show off. The people that don't want to show off still won't attach them. I don't understand what Qantas is trying to achieve here. Make it easier to lose bags, harder and longer to check in, and create more plastic barcode tags?

Do they have shares in a barcode and thermal printer company?

• The specific RFID technology in the tags are now deprecated/hard to source/etc., so it's harder to keep producing the older tags

Or maybe people realise that it's a good idea to have some sort of identification on their carry on bags. Instead of spending money on something they just use what the airline gave them for free. I fall into that category.

I find it so odd that so many people have such strong feelings on people like me doing this. How is it even remotely impacting on your life?
