I believe some TA's have the ability to submit such requests on behalf of their clients - they are generally granted.

However, an award flight does not normally have an associated TA who can do this.

Mine was booked through the Qantas website and was submitted without any special seat requests or other preferences. Also, it was a Red E-Deal (ca. $2050).

Very unusual - IME, more the exception rather than the rule. As an SG I had some difficulty securing that seat, even on request. These days I still need to request it as a WP.

Sorry guys i forgot about the 20% rule. Flight so busy these days it seems to happen months in advance now. Not that it worries me.

Your TA can book awards usually also, or atleast the couple i use can. (For a cost of course !).

So QF really do keep the front seats reservered for the people with status, thats good. (i think)

The pitch is the same as for any other standard QF 744 WHY seat.Call Qantas on 13 13 13 armed with your booking details and ASK. If there are less than around 20% of the WHY seats already pre-allocated they can pre-assign a seat for you.

You can get an idea of this by using www.checkmytrip.com and your Qantas booking reference. This may provide a seat map for you.
Success! 71 A and B are preselected for us in both directions. Thanks for the excellent advice.

Of course, when I showed Mr Vane, he grumbled about them being close to the toilets (five rows isn't 'close' IMHO), but he hates sitting next to strangers slightly more. I hate having to climb over people I don't know to go to the loo. So anyway, he can live with it. Also, seatguru.com is pretty bloody handy. I whipped it out to show Mr Vane where we would be and exactly why I'd done something so 'silly' as ask to be at the back of the plane.

Good Stuff.

Did you use www.checkmytrip.com to have a look at your seat map?

Click [+] View Details and click on the seat references.

As an aside, if successful you will see the premium are at the front of the cabin blocked out as allocated

I did, but I couldn't see a seat map along the lines of seatguru, just general measurements about the plane. I'll have another look after tea.

Hi Harriet,

Under your detailed itinerary in checkmytrip.com you'll see a red underlined VIEW DETAILS with a + next to it. If you click here it will expand and provide you with details on your current seat allocations and the like.

Thanks, Brett. I just found it and we are where I wanted us to be, so that's a relief. The cabin has very few allocated (purple) seats. I assume they are just people who are fussy enough to preselect, rather than that it's going to be a relatively empty flight?

It is hard to say, as this depends on dates and times of flights. Furthermore, as has already been mentioned, QF only allocate up to 20% after which seats are allocated at check-in. If you are really interested to see the PAX loads for your flights, PM me the details and I'll look them up on ExpertFlyer.

Cheers,

Brett

Getting "bumped" is very unlikely; generally you get to sit in your preallocated seat. Being on an award makes no difference, Qantas will treat you like any other WHY passenger.

Note that OLCI is not currently available for Qantas international flights.

One further question ... if you have no status, how did you get 35H preallocated for you? This seat is in the zone reserved for QP and above status, more than that 35H can generally only be preallocated on request and by SG/WP/CL only. As it's an award flight, was it booked on your behalf by a WP relative of yours?

I booked my award flight in Dec 06 through the website myself and the seat was automatically allocated at the time (or if not then, not more than a day or so after). I never spoke to anyone apart from asking for some help here on the forums :D. My seat preference for international flights is forward aisle and that's what got issued - for both my initial flight out of Sydney as well as my return flight into Sydney .

It's been an interesting exercise overall. Throughout my trip I fly Qantas, BA and AA. Using the forum tips and hints, I joined the AA club and managed to select my seat for that flight as well. The only flights I haven't been able to pre-select seats myself are the BA ones.
