How spot on is expertflyer in determining the punctuality of flights?

I'm trying to change from BA12 SIN-LHR to QF9 SIN-LHR. Having flown QF9 quite a few times I've usually arrived in LHR very punctually. But EF says that QF9 is late 25% of the time with the average delay being 72 mins :)shock:!), whilst BA12 only has a 5% chance of being late with an average delay of 8 mins.

I'm trying to fit in a day trip to Nottingham before flying off to DXB, so the more logical choice seems to be BA12.

But can someone advise me on whether I should trust the EF stats?

I use Flight Stats all the time and it seems pretty accurate - as accurate as any source I have seen.

Just noticed that flightstats have the same stats...hmmm

EF actually partners with FlightStats for the info - so it's the same info sourced by FlightStats

Sounds like I should stick to BA12 then. Knowing my kind of luck I'd probably end up on QF9 when it's part of the 25% of late arrivals for that flight when I do have to arrive on time.

Hmm... so if QF009 (with ETA of 0525) is 72 mins late into LHR, can I still make it to Nottingham by lunchtime (say 12 or 1 in the arvo)? I'd be catching the train. There are many reasons why I'd prefer to fly QF009 over BA12, amongst them being that QF009 is my handle. ;)

Or should I just be safe and stick to BA12?

Why not just be safe and stick with the one that's most reliable. Why make things more difficult than they have to be

True that...

Have you checked the likelihood of NNCW/NGCW on the BA12 route? That would be a factor for me.

@Dave - C'mon - this is AFF and QF009 is worse than me for being a flying junky

Still no reason to make things harder/ have more risks of problems especially when there is a desire/need to be at a location by a specific time.

Getting to the destination is the core point of the journey and taking unnecessary extra risks is a flawed idea imo

Even with NGCW I prefer QF J. I've realised that I can't sleep much on planes even with completely flat beds unless severely sleep deprieved, so the soft product does in a way matters. Plus BA's cabins are far too hot for me to get much sleep anyway - I always wake up in sweat. Gross.

I think I'll try to be sensible on the timing issue and go for BA12 though. ;)

Hmm and how on earth am I worse than you given that most of the stops in my DONE4 are for a reason other than MRs, unlike your BEHEMOTH? :p

Why are you flying to DXB again?

Because I'm actually visiting DXB. ;) [yes spending more than 48 hrs there]

Ok I'm going there via SIN and LHR...
Operative word = "most" ;)

you'd be better off asking this on the FT BA forum. if you are in F/J then you get fastrack immigration, which should help but is really just a longer wait for bags. HEX into paddington, then tube or cab over to st pancras. train from there is around 2 hours. so yeah, in theory very do-able.

it would probably help if you don't have much baggage.

hth,
jk.

just to put some rough timings on this -
- land ~630 (if late)
- immigration + bags ~730 - 800 (worst time of the day to land)
- heathrow express to paddington ~830
- district/circle line tube to st pancras ~900
- train to nottingham goes every 30 mins, takes 2 hours ~1130-1200

i think you will be fine. if you book your train ticket at least 24 hours previous it will be a LOT cheaper than a walkup fare.

the downside is it will take you that 3 hours+ to get back to LHR again, so you will not have much time out there. a better plan would be to get your friends/family to come meet you in london, that way you will have more time together, and less things to go wrong.

Yep flying in J so I'll get fast track. No bags - it's a long transit b4 heading to DXB that evening (dep for DXB at 2140). Friend has work which is why I'm the one heading over to Nottingham for lunch. Aren't I nice? ;)

Cheers for the tip about the train ticket. :)

I would avoid the pre-booked advanced tickets for this trip since they tie you a specific train. I would suggest just getting a saver ticket which will be valid on non-peak services but is not restricted to a specific train. If you book the v cheap tickets then you are v restricted
