QANTAS does on-departure cash upgrades?

Yes, from time to time. There have been a few from WLG.

They stick a modest sign up at the checkin counter if offering the upgrade. This is not a buy up, as SC and points earning are unchanged. It is simply a cabin upgrade.

Cheers, TK

I was offered to upgrade to J for S$1,000 on my QF36 SIN-MEL a couple of weeks ago.
Thought about it then declined.
Was fortunate as it turned out the Y cabin seemed only about a third full, which meant I had a row of 4 seats to myself

In my case no sign, I had to ask, lady replied they could do an "up-sell" but as you mentioned they said I would get SC and points as per my original booking.

Just got upgrade to business confirmation for my BNE-SIN flight tomorrow. Big thanks to the OP for letting me know about the promo. =)

Of course it all depends on the class, have a sale ticket, had no luck asking for J upgrade using points.

If only chauffeur drive was available on BNE-SIN...

@Limewood : I'm on an N class ticket, got the upgrade because of the promo.

.... and we're in Economy. SYD-DFW with the family.

I shouldn't be surprised - I've been flying Qantas International since 1997, WP with well over half a million points to spend on upgrades for this trip. 2-6 international flights per year with QFi and nearly weekly trips with QFd. Never had an international upgrade. Not Once.

Hugely disappointed Qantas. Try harder with your loyal customers please, after all - we're the reason you fly.

My J points upgrade for my wife and I didn't come through for SIN-SYD tonight. Currently have an empty seat next to us which hopefully our infant son can use. Ah well that's the upgrade lottery but I still have a tiny hope for the beep at the gate in 5 hours time. It will be the first flight in whY with QF in over 3 years.

No luck here today with an upgrade on QF 19 Syd-Manila.
Avaibility was looking good till yesterday afternoon, when all J seats disappeared.
I can only assume it was due to people changing plans to avoid the typhoon in Hong Kong.
Flight was full, but crew were great, and the trip was painless, even right down the back, other than the madness of the checkin this morning.

Currently in Pagstop Lounge, Manila airport, awaiting our Etihad flight to London, IN J!!!
These upgrade lotteries are not much fun.

Not much fun at all. As the customer, and a clearly loyal one at that, you shouldn't be made to feel indebted to the supplier for the privilege of letting you spend your currency with them, nor should you be left hanging to the end hoping they selected you in their cruel lottery.

So why collect QFF points at all? Not to use on international upgrades - my experience is that is a cruel joke. New ratios mean they're worth much less than ever before when buying a ticket outright. Should I be spending them upgrading my 50 minute ADL-MEL flights?

Well over half a million points to spend here and it feels like Ansett all over again.

Serious question - are QFF points really an incentive to fly Qantas anymore?

Not according to QF when they clearly think you should guarantee the purchase of a copy of Jamie Oliver's 30 Minute Meals for the same price*. Think of the kitchen makeover you could get with 500,000 points ... that's 4 coffee machines and a multi-processor!!

You're just not getting this subliminal message Curiosity is selling you, are you??

BD

Agree with your general sentiment and not a fan of the lottery myself - so I don't use it.
It didn't make sense to me with the QF system that an upgradeable ticket costs double or more than the lowest priced ticket AND then still you are in a lottery.
So I only my points for JASAs and hopefully soon, a FASAs
