premium economy

Y+ QF is much dearer than other airline. But having said that I just checked CX who I have used a few times, and they are now up at the $4000 mark to MAN. While I looked at SIA to MAN and they are around $3500. As QF is at around $4300, to LHR, that all they go to, are they worth it, when CX and SIA are cheaper.

what are the latest opinions about qantas premium economy? worth it or not? and is it worth using qff for premium economy seats long haul (to LAX)?

thanks in advance

I have done 3 PE QF flights, in both A380 & 747. The last was Syd-Santiago return. It is great value as the extra space, bit of peace and quiet and the much better food & drink makes a big difference. I was able to get a reasonable sleep on this flight which I doubt I would have on Y. These were all award flights.

Qf selling y+ at $3800 ish mel-lhr for Feb departures so they do come down. I just laugh at the price point it usually sits at. Yes it's much better than Y, but it is still NOT a flat bed and sits at margin value prop over Y.
@Red Roo - CR amenity kit might be nice but it represents $0 worth to the y+ value proposition to me. Assume CR pay for the advertising exposure (or share the cost) but if it puts up the Y+ ticket price it simply reduces the bums on seats potential. Not something I want to pay for - I can bring my own toothbrush and do a very little bit to save on landfill.

I booked Y+ during the early bird sale for Dec/Jan PER - MEL - LAX - JFK return with stopovers in LA (both directions) for $3600. Pretty good deal I thought! Upgraded to J domestic and requested upgrades to J for the other legs. I'm only a lowly NB but travelling solo so fingers crossed. I've been a QFF member since I was 10 years old, gotta count for something right lol.

downgraded, each to their own and as such I respect your view, but I am the opposite - I want decent kits - they are a touch that I love for premium travel. And I don't care about the mathematics of it :)

Just wondering if the Syd-Santiago was a 747-438? If it was,was it refurbished.Very curious indeed!!!!!

Speaking of pricing for Y+.......

The sale price available for a tiny amount of time and the rest of the year the fare is up to $6837. Seriously, who pays these prices? Do QF not know that you can fly J for that money?

I would say that Y+ is at least three times more comfortable than Economy and the major benefit is the separate cabin where you don't feel like you are in a sea of people.
There is no comparison though between J and Y+ with J being infinitely better purely to the lay flat seats.

What would be great is a service that offers J seating and Y service, I would happily pay for Y+ on this basis if it had the same price as now ;)

Now I normally book Y+ as a fall back then upgrade with points to J
This gives me Y+ SC earning which is the same as full priced Y economy that I don't think anyone ever pays for.

I agree, it's a lovely addition, but not something that represents any real value to me for when considering y+ travel. It's all about the food, seat and in-flight service in y+ for me. Lounge access would be a good addition if Qantas is considering any enhancements[SUP]*[/SUP] to y+.... :)

[SUP]* [/SUP]That would enhancements as per your standard English dictionary definition, not the Qantas dictionary. :)

I couldn't agree more, Vietnam Airlines are flying MEL to LHR A330 and B787 for $4400 in J. Although the A330 MEL to Saigon is angled seat, and the rest is fully flat.
Are some people both here and in the general public stupid enough to pay $6800+, I await Redroo's response and I do hope there is a response from Redroo, not silence???

Was looking at J flights from Per-JFK and was surprised that QF were the cheapest at ~$7K ... went back to check it a few days later and it is now $~10K.

Pricing lottery :)

You might have been initially looking during the early bird sale, it ended on Monday. I booked on Monday in Y+ PER - JFK return for $3500.

Not sure if all routes are on sale but Y+ sale now on and they are great prices.

We're off to South America in June/July and have booked Air NZ Y out and J in to Lima. We'll bid for Y+ upgrade out.

If we'd had a crystal ball we would have waited until now and booked Y+ with QF to Santiago and put in for points upgrades. We've flown Y+ three times now and enjoyed it each time plus last time booked got our points upgrades to J on both legs back from JFK.

Surely only taxpayers and shareholders would be paying $6-$7K for return Y+ fares, no-one in their right mind would pay those sort of fares out of their own pocket unless money was no object, and if money was no object you would be prepared to pay for F or J class class on QF anyway.

I suspect a lot of companies and some government agencies may have a hard "no business class" rule so that may explain why its sometimes possible to see Y+ fares higher than J fares. Classic pinching the pennies and throwing away the pounds policy.

how likely are you to get an upgrade using QFF points from Y+ to J? as I understand it's not a certainty

In the end, I was able to get 2 seats in y+ from LAX to Mel on qantas using my ff- mind you, it cost over $1000 in taxes- that's seriously sickening.

this morning i was excited to use my AA Advantage miles to score 2 seats in J - mel-syd-lax and taxes were only something ridiculous like AU$23 each- mind you, I had to buy the AA miles in the first place, so i guess it's as broad as it's long.

It can also be how much you are prepared to spend. e.g. Son was coming home for Thanksgiving. He only had a short period off (annual leave is not as generous in the USA.). I wanted to get him home as comfortably as possible so allocated an amount of circa $9000. I was planning to buy a J fare for him but they were mega high (even on air NZ), so looked at Y+ instead. They were also very high (maybe 8K). Even though I resented paying that much for premium economy, it fitted within the budget so I paid it. Because there wasn't much time available for the round trip I didn't explore options like going via Hong Kong.
