Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Brilliant news. Now, Australia?
Overseas COVID tests do not put a burden on our testing system in Australia so I think PCR tests prior to departure for flights to Australia will stay for quite a while yet. If the Feds removed this requirement some states would say everyone coming from overseas has to do hotel quarantine for 14 days if hey haven’t done a pre-departure PCR test effectively keeping the requirement in place.

Or maybe they may be more pragmatic and realise that the virus is circulating more within than from external. However, could be a case of being seen to do - something?

There are far more people overseas than in Australia and so new variants are far more likely to emerge overseas. So confirming using PCR testing that travellers travelling to Australia are negative makes it that little bit harder for a new variant should it emerge to get in, though in practice it may not delay it by much.

I'd much rather have to take a PCR test before returning to Australia than for the travel ban to be brought back.

You misunderstand my point. What if I test positive before returning to Australia, then continue to test positive 14, 28, 45, 65 days later due to virus shedding (I've heard some 89 days). Fed's can say all they like about just go to a doctor 14 days (against current domestic based 7 days mind you) after first PCR positive test to sign stat dec to Australian Government stating you are recovered. You could spend a month or two trying to see a doctor, let along get one to sign a COVID recovery letter. And still not get one. Needs to be something more firm. Perhaps 2 consecutive days of professionally administered RAT test (as you only show positive on RAT in height of infectious period of maybe 4 days).

And I’d prefer a pedicure to having my toenails ripped off with pliers.

In many ways, the PCR test prior to boarding is actually worse than the ban of returning citizens. If you’re living abroad (and have done for years), one can assume you’ve got the means and ways to support yourself. If an Australian heads off overseas for two weeks to a foreign country only to find themselves refused a return to their own country (and on their own trying to find doctors etc etc), then that’s got the potential to cause many issues.

What is definitely does, however, is ensure international travel is off the radar for 99% of the population.

I have no problems Novak getting a medical exemption so long at it fits with the ATAGi guidelines re exemptions.

My only problem is that it is not available in the same way to average Bob on struggle street.

Tennis Australia saying "its not up to me, or the pM ,or any other politician to determine whether or not he can play..." is basically a backhand way of telling the Federal government to lay off.

What TA does not seem to understand is that the Federal Minister for Immigration actually has the final say on the granting of an entry visa to anyone wanting to travel to Australia. (Or may be it does but is putting its best foot forward in anticipation of the Feds saying something)

Because of that statement, I do not support TA on this matter. (Not that my patronage carries any weight)

I believe that the exemption process for him to get into Australia - as he doesn’t fit into any of the open categories for travel - requires sponsorship by either the Commonwealth or a State.

Will be interesting to see who signs off on the exemption sponsorship. We’ve been down this rabbit hole before with the Queensland film industry -

“a foreign national whose entry into Australia would be in the national interest, supported by the Australian Government or a state or territory government authority”

Very clever!!!
Completely missed that

The individual exemptions:

Unless he’s donning scrubs and jumping into the emergency department, someone is going to have to argue admitting him is in the *national interest*

So my money is on the Vic Gov Department of Sport being the authority. Can’t see the Feds agreeing to do it.
