Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Do you expect that domestic flights will be allowable after an international arrival?
Within NSW? Probably not, at least initially, given they're probably going to require private transport from airport to home quarantine — a domestic flight isn't private transport! To other, closed States? Definitely not.
 
If PS is on schedule then by 2024 PER will be made redundant also

PER has a fairly big market - especially for inbound - that it could sustain a direct flight post PS. Or perhaps BA will pick it up with a QF codeshare.

In addition to the market size (Perth has the second biggest English born population, just behind Sydney), there was also the “promise” made by AJ that PS would be based in Sydney for the first 5 years - whatever that means. Some say that means the only PS services will be ex-SYD (although I think words were sufficiently ambiguous to allow services from other ports), and if that is the case QF9 from MEL via PER might still make sense.

Qatar. On the ones Im seeing they are using MAS to get into SA. So via KL. The direct ones using QR are mega expensive. Right now I'm seeing flights into UK and return in Y with a mix for 3 pax for $9500 total. Booked on QR. Also can book through MAS but longer transits.
Well done on tracking down an acceptable route/fare: just leaves the tricky 'last mile' including ground transport and home quarantine on return....

I too have been looking at QR (though for J seats to/from UK) and reached the same conclusion about them being uncompetitive. QR is continuing to make available only Elite fares for DOH-SYD, so that even with a Lite fare for outbound (the new unbundled P fare bucket) you are still up for $10-11K for the round trip. No thanks.

This is the case for SYD-DOH-LHR-DOH-SYD on QR for a sample of dates in all months from Dec 2021 until end of QR booking availability in Oct 2022. Looking on EF you see most fare buckets zeroed out and the seat maps show only a handful of allocated seats.

Presumably QR (among others) is still proceeding as though stringent caps on inbound loads will go on indefinitely. As Australians are making 2022 bookings now, particularly for the northern summer, QR must know they are losing business. All caused by the stand-off over inbound caps or are there other factors? A possibly hopeful sign – as flagged on another AFF thread – is a bit more Y inventory being offered in Jan.

Context for my interest is planning for several UK/EU trips from Q2 2022. I’m sitting on a QR credit voucher which must be fully expended by June 2022: if lower fare buckets in J don’t open up soon I will be taking my business elsewhere, cashing in the voucher and losing the 10% ‘bonus’ on the loan I advanced to QR last year. And yes – before anyone comments – this is rather a First World Problem compared with the situation of those seeking affordable availability for inbound travel in the more immediate future.
 
NSW is having a cabinet meeting later this week to discuss all this with the tourism minister. Home Quarantine trials are scheduled to finish end of October but they are looking to finalize the procedure by this week so that they can start actual home quarantine by Nov 1. They said they will remove all travel caps from Nov 1 as well.

I think they would finalize this by coming weekend and airlines start opening up bookings the following week.

Do we know whether 'home quarantine' actually means your home (we have tenants in there till January still) or whether self-quarantine in a hotel or in a spare room with a friend or relative is acceptable too?

I'd expect either everyone there has to quarantine with you or a separate house altogether. But it's NSW? Maybe anything goes.

Yea, I don't want to do this to anyone. Hence I'd rather pay for a hotel and it's all good. Hopefully, this will be accepted.

I doubt it, given by then the isolation rules will have relaxed I expect... wouldn't make sense?

That's likely the plan for the future but right now we really don't even know current! I'm just regurgitating SA conditions who acted as the pilot.

No mention about unvaccinated either - so I guess they are allowed to enter on those airlines without vaccine mandates

Still doesn’t outline the fate of tourists so no real date for the tourism industry to celebrate just yet

I think tourism is only like mid next year they said. First citizens and PR, then skilled migrants, then international students ad lastly tourists.
