That will come clear with time. Patience will be required but the federal government have plenty of levers to pull.

QLD will need tourism.

WA will need more money with iron ore prices heading down, and people there will start asking why shut-the-borders Mark spent 18 months with a crippling hospital system and didn't do anything about it. His argument will continue to be valid for a month or two, but when NSW and VIC are basically open and free, and at the first sign of one case, WA institutes a hard lockdown - that's when the big questions will be asked.

Also don't underestimate the power of the university sector in WA. International students will give WA a very wide berth until (relatively) free travel is allowed.

International students is one of the key levers. States that break from the plan and don't allow international travel to resume to a much greater extent than presently can hardly expect the Feds to approve huge numbers of international students to come to those states.

You're right, not that long ago we were the envy of the world, and virtually every country on earth would want to be in our position.

I really thought no nada zero zilch action on opening international borders until post May 2022 special date.

yes I must say in line with the last few posters above, I too feel like we might just have turned a little bit of a corner with many state and federal pollies coming out recently firmly in support of opening up at 70% and more at 80%. Also the growing emphasis on living with the virus. Such a different mood than poor Jane Hrdlicka encountered with her accurate but ill-timed comments earlier this year.

I agree that feeling of past 7 days, some, certainly at national level the pollies are saying, 'Living with covid', true jakeseven, only words, but we need something, anything to give us hope that common sense approach may eventuate from those paid by our taxes.

Case numbers in VIC & NSW irrelevant IMO, update us with Hospital cases & how well the Vac rate is going. End of presser.
Covid zero absolutely behind us now, we're locked down till at least 70%. It stinks. I bloody hope they are getting hospitals ready for the surge, it's bloody obvious isn't is??

Have you really booked a trip for 2023? I always found that I couldn't book a flight more than something like 11 months out.

Haven't booked the flight yet for the reason you identify. However, I have outlaid $13,000 to Luxury Escapes for the accommodation. I thought we deserved something a bit special for our planned family reunion. And yes I know how bad LE has been, but this one comes with a no questions asked full refund up to 21 days before check in. I figure I will know by Christmas 2022 if the border is really open.

I can only strongly agree about WA as the iron ore price collapses (and the AUD tanks!). WA has had hard economic crashes following mining booms before. The gold rush; late 19th cent boom; 1960s/early 70s boom (Poseidon anyone?); the early 80s boom; and now the China boom (parts 1 & 2).

Honestly, if the State border issues are any lesson, once international borders come down initially, just go - don't worry if quarantine/caps come back. (Assuming a person is fully vaccinated).

We've had a good experience with Luxury Escapes and that was booked before Covid. So no money back guarantees back then. They put everything into credit and allowed us to chip away booking other Aussie escapes. Their international deals are fantastic.

We're not there yet. Some LGAs and the regions are still largely COVID free, longer we keep it that way until vaccination is widely distributed and people have had a chance, the better. We still do have a responsibility to those who haven't had a chance to be vaccinated.

But it won't be far away.

Well, with current arrival caps just 3 overseas acquired cases today for whole Australia.
This would not do much damage even to still covid free areas.
