Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

So then the international borders is simply going to close until 2025? I don't think it will be realistic at all. Somehow some time the borders need to be reopened even if a Coronavirus vaccine is not available.

My opinion : borders WILL BE re-opened long before "effective, fully-tested, fully-proven" vaccine is widely available. Long before ! Whatever the pollies are saying today, can be retracted and replaced with something different tomorrow.

Right now ... 1589944730755.png

For me ..... IF I CATCH COVID (which is highly unlikely... even in NYC where 20% of pop have antibodies and so 80% do not ) ..... anyway .... IF I catch it .... I would have a 99.6% liklihood of living on , with immunity .... and only a 0.4% chance of dying. That is WITHOUT any vaccine.... I am happy with those odds.

Remember proven for other respiratory diseases... is that a bigger immune response can be more deadly than helpful... With 99.6% chances on my side, I won't be taking a vaccine.

I would agree with you, and whenever Asian countries re-open their borders, so would Australia I think, because you simply cannot afford your tourism to lagging behind everyone else in the region.

There are some hints that the safest country within this Coronavirus crisis, Taiwan, is announcing that international travel will resume in October. So I suppose we might see similar timeline for that with Australia, although once again it is just a speculation.

The borders, believe it or not, are not closed right now. They are open - and people are crossing them every day, but obviously passage across the borders is extremely restricted, both in terms of who can cross and what they need to do once they cross .

I think what we will see in not wholesale relaxing of conditions (which what many would term as "reopening") but gradual changes (relaxations, and possibly even tightening again from time to time) of restrictions.

Statement released from the Chief Health Officer of WA explaining the position he's recommended re continued closure of WA borders.

Dr Andrew Robertson Press Release

Key takeout - WA can open up hospitality, community services and community sport faster if they keep borders to other jurisdictions closed. They are looking at two incubation periods (eg 1 month) of no community transmission in the "other jurisdictions" as an appropriate benchmark for reopening state borders. Feels like that's quite a way off yet...

If this is the health advice, then Western Australia can become independent then.

Two incubation periods (eg 1 month) of no community transmission in the "other jurisdictions"? How will that going to happen?

I think Scoot Morrison should intervene once the Eastern states are ready - I think it is too long and costing the economy too much for State borders to be closed.

I think it’s time to review GST arrangements don’t you ;)

There are a couple of barristers out touting for someone to take an action to the High Court challenging the border closures under Section 92 of the Constitution. They do point out it is allowed on public health grounds but the State CMO/CHOs are going to have to test their advice against the Commonwealth CMO,his Deputy and presumably the NSW CMO as well.Could be very interesting.

Even though I’d be happy for the SA border to open the WA Premier has a point though. Why should any state take the advice of NSW after their pathetic and disgraceful handling of the Ruby Princess. Happy to listen to the Feds but NSW needs to butt out of other states affairs

Except it is now the advice of the Federal Govt CMO. I think Gladys should stay out of any further discussions. What is happening now is starting to become unconstitutional.

SA is likely, well, in trouble then. And also some pointed comments about submarine contracts might fix it.

Nothing is going to the High Court.

All the Karens need to calm down and take a time out.

Exactly my point. Gladys and co need to stay in their lanes and leave it up to the Feds. Just think she has had a bit too much to say and it’s not helping anyone

I don’t want to be a killjoy, but in the last hour I’ve seen state border closures discussed in three separate threads (lockdowns, VA administration and this one), isn’t the right thread the lockdown thread? Or merit a separate thread of its own.

From that:
With the introduction of Phase 2 on the 18 May 2020, health surveillance, including enhanced testing, is being undertaken to ensure that there are no outbreaks or community spread.

WA has the lowest testing rate in Australia at only 2647 tests per 100,000 people.
The average in Australia is currently 4366 tests per 100,000 people.
Positive tests at 0.8% is second highest in Australia

Test rate in WA bounces around, but averages only about 1300 per day recently. National average recently applied to population of WA would be about 3000 tests per day.

If that amount is enhanced testing, I would hat to see normal testing. I assume an increase is on the way?

So wasn't the entire point of this excercise to "flatten the curve"? Have the states now decided they are going to eradicate, against the policy of the Commonwealth and without any plan to make this happen other than "shut the state borders!!!".

Cant eradicate - impossible. The smaller states are just feeling comfortable because they aren’t testing enough. Sigh

Cant eradicate - impossible

Exactly.

So one really has to question wtf is going in when you’ve got premiers making statements like “I want to see two incubation periods with zero new cases”. It’s really getting out of control. I feel if we started to get the country back on track, we may get through this, but if these measures continue for much longer than the damage will be very hard to undo.

With the UK still having no clue what direction to take, the Republic of Ireland is now forcing us (and others) to a 14 day mandatory isolation period; unless you're coming from Northern Ireland. We're about to tick over into June now and I dare say nothing is going to be relaxed until late, late this year .... even if at all.

There's talk about all these different travel bubbles and maybe allowing Australians in here because low risk etc. but it's all just unknowns.
