Preallocation on BA/QF

Am now happy to report:
Seat Request: 40G / 27G / 80K / 24B
MEL-SIN (4 class 744), SIN-FRA (3 class 744), LHR-SIN (4 class A388), SIN-PER (2 class A333)

how do you all select your seats beforehand without calling them up? I am looking at my online booking via QF website and can't seem to have any options to select seats, or to see what i've been assigned.

At the top of your booking, under 'special requests' it will have something like this listed:
Seat Request: 40G / 27G / 80K / 24B

If there's nothing there, you have not been auto allocated anything.

You can't choose beforehand either, you just get an auto allocation (if you qualify); and then you can ring up to change.

This is not necessarily the case; www.qantas.com/yourbooking does not always show all seats allocated, often it shows none when indeed they may have been.

If none are shown, you can use www.checkmytrip.com to look up your booking. Once 'logged' in and your booking information is showing, look to the bottom of the "your flight selection" box for:
[+]view details click to see additional information including price, payment and flight special requests.

Click the "[+]view details" and the window will expand and you may see any seat pre-selection there. If you do see a seat number, click that/those and you may get a seat map.

Yes, to request or change seating you need to call Qantas.

If you are traveling after March 13th and never been on the A380 yet I will post and let you know how good seat 80K is as I am preallocated on that seat for my SYD-SIN trip on the 13th. of course if my upgrade to J comes through I will report on how good the new J offering is instead. Actually it is about time I did my first trip report for AFF this time so I will do that.

Thanks for your replies re: seat allocations - i had a look using checkmytrip and sure enough it showed by seat allocation but only for the QF - not BA metal (with QF flight number). BUt checkmytrip is only for viewing, not changes, am i right?

I tried calling QF up and asking for seat request for the SIN-SYD route on BA metal (QF codeshare). They told me they couldn't do it yet as BA have not released the seats yet, and asked me to call back regularly close to the date of travel.

Is that the norm?

Correct, only for viewing.

I don't believe you will be able to preallocate unless you are SG or WP. You will be able to checkin online for the flight at T-48.

T-48 hrs? Really? My experience with OLCI is T-24 max. I'll give QF a ring closer to the date again anyway just to see what's the deal. I'm travelling together with my partner i'm hoping they will let us sit next to each other in J (ie the middle section). Thanks for your responses!

It IS T-24 hours or there abouts.

Are you and your partner on the same booking? If so you have little to worry about in not being seated together - this is one of the benefits of BA's seating philosophy.

Hi serfty, yes we are on the same booking. But i was just concerned that they may put us sitting opposite each other (the window side) rather than facing the same way next to each other. On paper it still looks like we may be next to each other.

I find the window/aisle facing each other actually pretty decent when travelling with someone and quite decent for having conversations
