pre-assigned seating upon online seat assignment/online check in?

hi does anyone know how the velocity computer pre-assigns seats on check in/seat assignment?
I'm a silver member, and generally purchase saver fares, in my velocity profile i have a preference for an isle seat.
every time i do the online seat assignment (even up to 14 days in advance as is allowable), I'm always put into 8C, and it shows all the seats closer to the front in economy, as occupied.
However just in the last few days my seat assignment on flights appear to be in 5C

Does anyone know how to get it pre-assigned to 3C, or do you move closer to the front depending on frequent flyer status?

Platinum members typically will get 3C.

The higher your status - the more forward in the cabin it will assign you.

The other day I went to pre-allocate for an upcoming flight and I was already assigned 3C.

I normally get 3C auto'd due to status and profile preference which is great
Last month I made a booking the day before I was flying out and got allocated row 7 and I called up to see if anything could be done to get better seats but had no success. Then when I got to the gate I asked again and they managed to place me in row 4 on both flights for my friend and myself and scored a fee seat maybe a 'shadow' seat but the rest of the plane was full so <3 Virgin for that!

Just gone to check in online and found the seats I have chosen have been removed and we have been bumped back.....

Just out of interest what would happen if there were 12 Platinums on a flight? Would they all be pre-allocated 3C? There may also be Golds who already choose 5C, 6C and so on. So where do the other Platinums go? Down the back or is it a cascade effect?

Just checked my seating allocation for a flexi fare in 2 weeks time. 1A!!!

Not sure what has happened, but yesterday I arranged 2 half price points upgrades on other flights. Tried for a 3rd for this flight but was told no availability. 3rd time lucky perhaps?

Problem is now, I can only be disappointed if there is a reallocation and I end up in Row 3!!

You are probably on a 737-700 with no business class for the 3rd flight.

737-700 it is. Strange for them to be scheduling a non-business equipped aircraft at 5.00 pm MEL-BNE. I guess I could lose out if there is an equipment change to a -800 and others pre-select row 3 in the meantime (or I just take up the upgrade I originally intended).
