Possible forum posting change?

Some have varying levels of experience to offer when they join forums like AFF.

I had been maximizing my travel opportunity / status as much I believed I could for 10 years before coming across AFF.

Back then I was Gold having been top tier until Qantas made it harder in 1998. 50 weeks after I first posted on AFF I became WP.

Here's links to my first few posts here:
Some may have been useful, some show naivety

Anyway, I received my very first PM from one of the regulars here wanting to know who I was & lambasting me for awakening old threads (who'd have thought that would be a problem:shock:) and noting the use of the 'ignore' facility could be employed.

Its fair to some some first time posters can frustrate us regulars, prime example was 'Macgret', man was I tearing my hair out with that one!!!:!:

I might skip finding my old posts - but it is easy to overlook posting dates, and easy for a newcomer to find the site, and read an old thread and respond to it. Not so bad if they have some content to add.

You definitely weren't alone there!!

He/She/It takes the prize for the most annoying newbie.

Sorry TG but I'd like to voice my strong objection to the idea. I see AFF as not only a close knit community full of knowledgeable people, I also see it as a source of information and empowerment to newbies who are seeking information they'd otherwise not be able to acquire elsewhere or a forum for people with the same interests to share their insights. I can't remember what my first thread here or on FT was, but I can bet you it was probably a 'help help what can i do' or 'help me choose an ffp' type thread. And don't all of us start somewhere? Heck I still find myself starting those threads from time to time when I have a blonde moment. Then occassionally you also have Gurus ;) coming in to dazzle us all with something most of us have not known about.

I see TG's point about the inane whingers, trolls and spammers (I've had to deal with a fair share of those myself as one of the mods on SQTalk), on the other hand however frustrating these people are they constitute a small minority of new posters. The vast majority of new posters are genuinely here to look for answers to their queries, or to offer new insights to the forum.

To impose the proposed restriction on new posters would be to make AFF a lesser forum, less welcoming to new posters - and more of an elitist clique of regulars.

You're not the only one....

Travel Guru - don't agree.

I think someone having a good old whinge sometimes generates interesting discussion. As long as spam and inappropriate posts are suitably filtered as Admin suggests happens then first time posters should be encouraged.
.

agree 100% here unless of course someone knows something I don't know and should I be going out tomorrow and joining the socialist party?

we have a right for free speech, and for that case free postings, if the Travel Guru does not like first time posts, well, honestly dude, dont read them...

Mr!

Having just read this thread from top to bottom in one hit I have to say that I agree with the principle of what Travel Guru is saying. ;)

That aside if admin and the moderators believe they have this under control then I would not go any further at this time as our collective awareness has been raised. I'm sure people will now refer to our fearless leaders  more frequently if they see an issue.

There is always the option to review this again in the future.

Indeed; if people see something that they think shouldn't be there, please use the report post facility and it will be looked at pretty promptly
