Possibility of reaching Platinum

Thank you for the replies.

All my flights are international and very little domestic. My sectors are mainly Asia; although next year I will have one or two European trips.

You are absolutely right though; to see if there is really a need for Platinum.... Tbh, after weighing all the options; prob not.

My long term goal is to reach the Lifetime status Gold so working towards that really.
Flying enough to get Platinum certainly accelerates progress towards LTG.

However there’s always the possibility of changes to the program that could make it harder to reach LTG.

Many were well on the way to BA LTG (similar to QF LTP), but not yet close to reaching it, and then BA switched to a revenue model making it no longer realistic to reach BA LTG.

I am trying to progress quickly towards QF LTG so that if QF does make it harder to reach, I would be close enough that reaching LTG would still be realistic with grandfathered progress.

LTG is mainly of benefit for flying QF domestically in economy or internationally flying QF/OneWorld/other partners in economy or premium economy.

Yes, I mainly fly only One World partners where possible. Very different quality of service, meals and comfort. They tend to go out of their way to make you feel warm and special. Something I am almost always find it disappointing when flying QF.

I just searched on google flight for Manila to Singapore return on CX on a few random dates, and all priced at around 1k AUD equivalent.

You get 40 SC (MNL-HKG) and 80 SC (HKG-SIN) each way, so 240 on the roundtrip. You get full SC rather than half because Qantas does not service these two routes even via codeshare.

Obviously you need to do your 4 Qantas flight as well but I assume you can meet that requirement.

I would agree with Mviy's. I don't see QF keeping LTG at it's current place or maintaining SCs in it's current form for the next 10 years.

A decade ago I also set out achieving LTG and I reached it 2 years ago (under 10 years) but I've recently also paid the price of trying to get LTOWE with BA only to have the rug pulled out from underneath me after getting 30% of the way there.

I would ask yourself why do you want WP/OWE and how frequently would you use it? I enjoy flying even in Y. I recall trying to achieve AS status and flew AU-US every weekend. Do you enjoy flying? Is this a hobby for you? If so then go ahead!

Perhaps but I am hoping to stay positive; have to give it a go. No one can really predict the future for certain. If not use the points and move to another alliance. Currently Star Alliance has no LT right?

Yes, frequent traveler here but stumbled upon this site recently only. And yes, I am that person that takes the longest route possible not because of maximising SC's but simply because I love flying! And yes 95% of my flights have been in economy class. But now I learnt about the SC game and LT value; there is even more passion in flying :)

I mentioned the comments from travel agents in another thread here...

For what it's worth, I think this is a good approach. We're all speculating as to what Qantas will do in the future re: mechanisms for status earn, whether they'll shift the goal posts for LT status, or whether they'll devalue LT status in any way, so until such time as anything is confirmed, your choice is to either keep plugging away at earning LTG until such time as you achieve it or Qantas moves the goal posts, or simply give up on it and go with whatever airline/fares offer you the best cost/benefit for a given journey. If you decide to chase LT status and Qantas shift the goal posts on you (similar to what BA did for a number of members here), you'd just have to re-evaluate your position and decide what to do from there. It may still be worth chasing if the goal hasn't shifted too far.

I'm one of those chasing LTG as a safety net for when I don't - or simply can't - fly as much. Hit LTS last June and figured that requalifying for WP/OWE each year would ultimately get me to LTG without too much hassle. However, once I saw what was going on with BA messing around with their LT offerings, I decided that Qantas may take a look at that and decide to "enhance" their own program (albeit unlikely that they'll go to the extremes BA did). Consequently, I've sought to significantly accelerate my plans and am now on track to hit LTG next year, hopefully having avoided - or at least significantly mitigated - any enhancements Qantas may decide to introduce between now and then.
