I am looking at spending a couple of days in Port Douglas, and have got down to a choice between two hotels - Redisson Treetops (cheaper) or Sheraton Mirage (looks better). Has anyone here got views on these two, or maybe other options in the area?

The radison tree tops is ok, but not the most styleish. They were planing a refirb when we were there, so it might be better by now. If you go there the tree house's are a great place for a special dinner, have to pre book though. The staff were awesome when we stayed there (2 yrs ago), went out of there way for everything for us. Was worth the money, but wouldn't of payed any more.

The mirage is very nice. Didn't there but played golf and had lunch. Very nice. Guess you pay for what yo get.

Have just come back from Port Douglas. Stayed in a villa at Sheraton Mirage, and it was great, a walk across lawn to the beach, plus hotel has some great "lagoons" for swimming.
Breakfast was included, and buffet selection excellent.
Staff were friendly, tour office and reception very helpful.
Refurbishment is planned for the hotel, but surprisingly it is holding up quite well for its age. Rooms look adequate from looking at them, though maybe not as spacious as the villas.
The really big benefit of staying at the Mirage is the extensive grounds, well maintained and expansive.
I've heard good reports of the Radisson, but you don't get anything like the same environment.

Just a tip if you're thinking about staying at the Mirage, get a Starwood Priviledge Card before you go. It's dining discounts can certainly make eating at the Mirage much more enjoyable, especially the seafood buffets they put on there.

The Starwood Priviledge Card also offers a number of accommodation vouchers.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

When compared with the Mirage, Treetops is a Motel with a restaurant that has a good presentation/rap (the restaurant that is).

IMO, at the Sheraton, you pay for what you get, at Treetops you don't get what you pay for!

(And I have stayed at both...)

Thanks for all the feedback. In the end, my travelling companion (aka SO) made the decision for me :)

I liked the way that serfty's message had a google ad for the Thala Beach Lodge inserted. Unfrotunately, couldn't justify the $$ for that.

Oz_Mark,

just to add another one to the list is the Peppers Links Resort. Having stayed at both the Sheraton and Links resorts, if SPG points aren't your main motivation and your price sensitive, then this is a very good alternative.

Address is http://www.peppers.com.au/links

So which one did she pick, I mean which one did you pick?

Johnk, Was going to go the Mirage, which I could get for $300 a night, but the Treetops came in with a deal at $140 a night (including breakfast). I was going to go the Mirage, but got talked into the Treetops. Apparently there are other uses for the money saved!

SPG points were not a motivation has I have no points with them, although I have joined.

A big difference in price there. Hope you enjoy your stay.

Now with the money saved you can now afford to come to AFF's inaugural golf challenge in August. ;)

Had they not come through with the price reduction, it would have been the Mirage. But $140 is a pretty keen price, which certainly swayed the decision somewhat!

I stayed at Treetops and wasn't hugely impressed (it was OK, but I wanted better), so I'd definitely go for Sheraton Mirage next time I'm up there.

After reading some of the comments, I am not expecting too much, so hopefully won't get too disappointed.
