I’ve booked a domestic economy flight Red E-deal N. There are business seats showing to be booked with points. I have requested an upgrade. I thought this was done fairly quickly in the past but now QF told me over the phone that they will let me know within 7 days of the flight which is next July!
Is this new? Or does the fare bucket make a difference?
Thanks guys.

Fare type makes no difference here. If there is a business class reward seat showing than it should clear instantly. It shouldn't be a problem but has your booking been ticketed yet?

As the Frequent flyer T&C's state (my bolding):
16.2.1 Classic Upgrade Rewards can be requested for a specific flight and date between 353 days and 24 hours prior to scheduled departure of the flight. The awarding of Classic Upgrade Rewards is subject to availability at the time of request. If a Classic Upgrade Reward is available at the time of request, it will be confirmed immediately and Qantas Points will be deducted from the Member's account.

I don't even know where they got the 7 days from given the table on the Qantas website suggests 3 days - 24 hours for domestic depending on status.

I'd wait a bit and then try again later to see if someone can help.

For this to happen without issue the following needs to occur in order:

1. Book Online noting sufficient U class available.
2. Wait for E-ticket to arrive (with ticket number*).
3. If U class still available request upgrade online.

If you did 3 before 2 you almost always find the upgrade gets waitlisted and you'll then find yourself needing to contact a sometimes ill informed Qantas Agent who may relate to you an incorrect or irrelevant line.

*A Qantas Ticket number starts with 081-

Yes. You must be ticketed before requesting the upgrade. This is quite important.

Now odd QF would tell you you're on the waitlist. that seems odd.

You can always cancel the request and try again. Unless a policy change has occured (seems unlikely) it should clear as per above.

Thanks guys very much. This was an agent in CapeTown today. The call was answered within 1o mins but the whole call took over 2 hours to fix this problem with my ticket, and cancel 3 points domestic flights one of which is still showing in MMB!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
