Points upgrade chances QF1&2 vs QF9&10? (SYD vs MEL).

Hi Flyers,

I'm a Zurich based expat QF Gold looking to use up a lot of QF points and change program. I'm visiting Aus again in November, and hoping to upgrade me and my wife from Economy to Business on the long leg from Dubai to either Melbourne or Sydney (and the return leg as well). Of course, I'll be getting an upgradable fare.

I was wondering if anyone has any sense that upgrades are easier/harder to come by on QF1,2,9 or 10? My intuition is that there would be slightly better chances on the Melbourne routes?

My upgrade track record has been pretty good before, even as silver, but usually I've been upgrading on the full trip LHR->SYD. Are upgrade chances impacted by joining/leaving the flight in Dubai?

Thanks for any thoughts!

i couldn't guarantee you for sure, but i would be confident in saying that QF9/10 is the better choice ;)

There are certainly more award seats in premium cabins on QF9/QF10 looking ahead ... that's somewhat of a pointer.

What day of the week are you planning for?
i found mid week can be better sometimes for upgrades.

I agree QF 9/10 is a better chance, especially Tuesday - Thursday.
If you have enough points, why not just book a classic award business Melb - Dubai. Seems to be plenty available in November and that way you can be sure of a more comfortable flight. Also avoids having to pay for a possibly more expensive upgradable economy flight.

I'm GVA based and have a EF subsription - let me know your dates and I'll see how I can help. Hope you had a good national day on Friday :)

Thank you all for the advice, particularly the offer to help via EF, Bryan, Thanks! (I actually spent Swiss National Day in Wales :)) I'm all booked now and we'll see how it goes, into SYD and out of MEL, mid-week.
