Hi there

We are currently in Sydney but will fly to Guangzhou, China soon. My husband's company will pay for economy flights (2 adults, 2 children) and we were thinking of using our points to upgrade to business class.

We have Amex points which we can use to upgrade but we're told that we won't know until it comes time to check in.

This is crazy as it means we can't pack and use any extra luggage allowance that business class affords.

Also, are the points on qantas the same as cathay pacific - I can't seem to get the information on upgrades that I need.

Does anyone have any info on confirmation/luggage or points?

Thanks

The availability of the upgrade will depend on the type of economy ticket you have - some arent upgradable.

The upgrade will be confirmed or not at least 5 hours before your flight - so plenty of time to pack.

What airline are you flying with ? And will you be transfering the Amex points to a Airline FF account ?

We will be flying QANTAS. Yes, the points will come from Amex.

Which airline gives 5 hours notice? Our agent said that in Sydney airport they won't tell us until we check in. Is that 5 hours standard? Are there any circumstances considered that enable you to get an answer earlier?

simongr is referring to when QF is believed to process mileage upgrade requests (as opposed to op-ups). You can find out if you have been successful by viewing your PNR, seeing the mileage being deducted or phoning QF. You do not have to wait until turning up at check in (unless you are connecting from elsewhere and checking in earlier than the upgrades are processed).

Qantas will deduct the points from your FF account before you fly. I have been told that in general this will happen roughly 5 hours before the flight once the loads are confirmed.

Can be earlier than 5 hrs, I think it depends on time and other factors as I have checked 8/9 hrs prior and have seen the points deducted.

I have seen the point deducted at 8am for an 11pm flight; by 8:05 I had called Qantas and changed my seat allocation.
