Just wondering if anyone has first-hand experience claiming on their complementary Platinum or Signature card travel insurance.

I travel to Asia for 4 - 8 weeks in order to escape Canberra's winter, and have been doing this for greater than a decade. During each visit I rely solely on my Citibank complementary insurance. I have no pre-existing medical conditions, take no regular meds and have never made a claim.

I am now spending more time in Asia and doing more interesting activities. For instance, in July/August 2015, I am cycling solo 1,100 km across the Tibet plateau at altitude in Aba and Sichuan provinces. There are no hospitals except in the start and finish cities. I clearly need good travel insurance.

Although my Citibank travel insurance is basic, it seems to sufficiently cover hospitalisation and evacuation if required.

Does anyone have any specific experiences with their complementary credit card travel insurance (good or bad) that I may need to take into account before relying again on mine.

Cheers

Personally I havent, but I know people who have. They all havent had an issue although none were for medical. The CC insurance can sometimes be more comprehensive then other brough ones, sometimes not. They are all underwritten by a couple of the big companys. If you are doing specific things I would read through everything to make sure you are covered and even email them with specific questions. As far as i know none will cover extreme sports or compeating in events. Cycling solo I wouldnt imagine a problem with that

Thank you for you very prompt reply

I have read the exclusions, and agree that extreme sports (and illegal) activities are excluded...as they are with most insurances. Cycle touring is not specifically excluded. (However, some may consider cycle touring in China extreme due to traffic risks).

I guess my concern was more about whether cc insurers are less likely to pay out when compared with OTC travel insurance. It seems they no different from OTC insurances.

Your reply was very useful, thanks.

General reviews about claims in instances where the policies are underwritten by Zurich are quite good. Before two months away last year I had a good research and felt comfortable with the internet's general feeling.
