Re: Platinum reserve flight changed to travel credit and pooling of multiple travel c

Just got a physical letter from Amex stating the free flight on Edge will covert to $200 travel credit on 31 March 2017, so if you have a free flight book before that time or it will be converted.

Thanks for the update.

I guess by 'pooling' this means credits from more than one card?

Re: Platinum reserve flight changed to travel credit and pooling of multiple travel c

I was redeeming my free flight reserve today and the guy on the phone told me that there will be mandatory conversion of the free flight/night to a $400 travel credit from a set date.

Intersting, $400 travel credit is the same you get for the Explorer - I wonder if AMEX is finally pulling the plug on Reserve and replacing them with Explorer...?

Re: Platinum reserve flight changed to travel credit and pooling of multiple travel c

Doesn't seem like the Edge card is worth keeping in my opinion. This change makes it hard to justify the annual fee.

I'm planning on swapping to the Engineers Australia fee of $149 which makes the reduction from free flight to $200 travel credit more palatable.

Re: Platinum reserve flight changed to travel credit and pooling of multiple travel c

I always find out hard to use travel credit. For airline book it has to be an airline which is bookable on amex travel which excludes most budget airline, and for hotel booking you lose elite benefit and SNP. So I would apply at least a 25% discount to the value of the travel credit.

Re: Platinum reserve flight changed to travel credit and pooling of multiple travel c

Another issue with the travel credit (versus booking direct) is I believe that Amex charge an additional service fee to change/cancel a booking on top of the fees that the airline charges.

You basically lose the entire credit amount in the event of many cancellations.

Re: Platinum reserve flight changed to travel credit and pooling of multiple travel c

Just got the letter and exciting tri-fold card stock announcement of the "enhancement' of my Platinum Reserve free flight into $400.

There is more text about the restrictions and exclusions than there is about the benefits. Amex has really downgraded the benefit of membership this year. I think they've gotten greedy because so many people applied for the Platinum Charge and companion Platinum Reserve Credit this year. They must have a false sense of certainty that the people have taken up the offer for the rewards of membership, vs. the 100K point bonus. I for one am not paying $1200 to renew based on the chan-I mean enhancements they've made this year. I have until March to find a new card. We've charge 90K in travel alone this year onto the Plat Charge. I wonder who wants that business instead?

Re: Platinum reserve flight changed to travel credit and pooling of multiple travel c

I have yet to receive the letter for my Reserve, but have received for my Edge. They really try to sell the credit as an amazing benefit and I wonder how much all these 'letters' are costing them. I'm definitely going to be asking to be swapped to the PA version of the Edge before my annual fee renewal so that I am only paying $149pa for a $200 travel credit.

All up, annual fees will be $1100 (Charge and Edge) for a combined $900 travel credit. I can make up the remaining $200 in statement credits many times over.

Does it tell you when the 'enhancement' comes into effect?

Do you mean $500 in credits:
$300 for charge and
$200 for Edge

and $400 for the Reserve.

Re: Platinum reserve flight changed to travel credit and pooling of multiple travel c

Makes sense then.
I've just replaced Edge with Explorer so have $1600 annual fees for $1100 in travel credits.
I've read they will allow us to pool travel credits across cards. Hope you can split it up if required otherwise will need to book the annual non points redemption flight in Y with the kids with the credit.

The letter stated effective March 31, 2017. My card anniversary is May.

Thanks for the advice, going to call today and see about using flight.

Maybe my letter is lost in the post with my gifts from Santa ;)

This. The Reserve is free with the Charge so makes no sense not to have it with its free flight/travel credit.

Re: Platinum reserve flight changed to travel credit and pooling of multiple travel c

My Platinum card was renewed in Nov this year and I have used my comp flight recently. Does this mean the new $400 travel credit becomes available after 31 March 2017 or after my next renewal date in Nov 2017?

Re: Platinum reserve flight changed to travel credit and pooling of multiple travel c

Received my letter yesterday. It states "The current complimentary flight or hotel stay can be redeemed until 29 March 2017, after which, this benefit will be replaced by the $400 Travel Credit."

My Platinum card was renewed in Nov this year and I have used my comp flight recently. Does this mean the new $400 travel credit becomes available after 31 March 2017 or after my next renewal date in Nov 2017?

For this renewal year Nov2016-Oct2017 you either get your free flight pre 31March2017 or $400 credit thereafter. So you have already used your free flight/credit for this renewal year.

Next renewal year Nov2017-Oct2018 you only got $400 free credit.

So essentially it is telling people that for this renewal year if you want to use your free flight book it prior to 31March 2017 or else it will be $400 credit, and continue to be $400 credit in subsequent years
