Platinum CC Travel Insurance

I am sure this is one topic that I have not come across in this forum over the years!

My suggestion is simply to avoid issue and arrange for one of the spouses to have a simple trip related policy - best through one of the more cost effective (generally online) insurance companies. e.g Columbus or Travel Insurance Direct.

Finally managed to speak to someone at AXA who had researched my query, and get email advice on same.

Email reads:

"Further to our conversation I can confirm that given the information I have received your wife will be covered for her trip but your de facto partner is not.

If your de facto partner is a supplementary card holder she will automatically be covered for any journeys she may take."

Only recognise one spouse at a time, even in the sceario that equus presents. But overcome easily by ensuring that both are supplementary. As I deem the AXA coverage to be sufficient for my needs, this is an simple and cost-effective course of action.

Just a quick update.

There have been a few threads re the appropriateness of credit card based travel insurance.

On this trip I originally sought advice on, it turned out that I did need to rely on the insurance for the loss of a piece of hand luggage that was left in a taxi on the way to the airport. With a toddler in tow, a full boot and a couple of items in the front & back seat of the taxi, one of those bags got left behind which happened to contain mostly new high-end store purchases that I didn't trust to check in and was to be hand luggage. Even the luggage itself was new!!! Luckily it was only one bag and a smaller one at that, having departed for HKG with 2 suitcases and coming back with 5, I would have hated to work out what was missing in one of the larger cases.

Axa were very helpful, everything got sorted out relatively quickly compared to previous experience with "specialist" travel insurance companies, resolved to my satisfaction, they rang when they said they would and things got done within the timeframe promised, a very pain free experience.

Obviously situations vary and perhaps if it was a different type of claim I may have had a different experience, but now I not only feel that the Amex policy suits my needs for most trips I will undertake, but I have some reassurance in the way I was dealt with by Axa.

Also worth a compliment is the first class lounge in HKG for Virgin Atlantic. The manager dealt with the taxi company, promised to let me know the outcome by the time I landed in SYD or if not then via email, and followed it through with a couple of emails without prompting. Axa were then happy to rely on this as "reported" rather than requiring a formal police report to also be lodged which saved a bit of hassle as well.

Yes and this is the question I'm trying to get answered by AXA. Also note "Spouse means basic holder of an American Express Platinum Credit Card member’s husband, wife, fiance(e) or a de facto and/or life partner" so everything up until that point is one or the other.

I also now believe getting my girlfriend the supplementary will not work:

Q: Are my Supplementary Card members covered by this insurance?
A: Yes, if their airfares are charged to the Supplementary
Platinum Credit Card.

As everything is charged to my card, I would be restricted to spouses and dependants. Ahhhh, the joys of travel insurance...

Hi,

I was curious so I was reading through the threads, but I just thought I would point out that Life Partner is the politically correct term for a partner in the same sex relationship.

Furthermore, AXA is not the insurer to this policy - AXA is the assistance company, where as ACE Insurance is listed in the PDS as being the Insurer of the cover. :)

It was happy to hear though that you had a good experience with the luggage you lost. So I guess that means that travel insurance on credit cards is sometimes useful :)
