Platinum Card, what will I get for $900

I paid the annual memnbership for my Plat credit card in September 10. As I'm, thinking of upgrading to the Plat charge card at $900 / year with the free associated Plat credit card, I rang AMEX up to confirm that I would get a pro rata refund on the annual membership fee I paid in September for the Plat credit card but they said I wouldn't.....this seems to go against the info given above. Can anyone who has had recent experience clarify?
thanks
kpc,

When I did this several years ago I simply range and said I required the refund and they said yes. Maybe things have changed.

My Amex Plat arrived yesterday, will activate next week.

With the free domestic flight could it be say Brisbane to Perth return?

How long does it take for the 75K points to show up?

Is the $900 charged to card then interest on top?.

Up to you if you don't need it yet, however despite the long weekend you can activate easily online yourself.

I'm sure the flights have been covered a million times before, however here is the link American Express Australia - Destination Guide

I've had my card for a few weeks now and no bonus points (75k) yet - as we all know sometimes when they say it could take up to eight weeks, it actually can

I'm not quite sure you understand how charge cards work - they do not charge interest as the full balance must be paid when you get your statement... Therefore you will be charged the $900 as soon as you activate your card and it will be due as part of your next statement.

Know how charge cards work and always pay balance in full before due date, but was thinking this $900 could be classed as cash payment but apparently not, it just a charge.

Looks like I can get a Brisbane to Perth flight plus I'll buy one for my good woman.

Just had a gander through the privileges book, more than I expected, will give the Amex travel service a try to see if they are competitive, we normally book flights accom. online direct.

The Domestic flight is with the Credit card, not the charge card. So you need to get that (free with the Plat card) to get the flight.

Re the 75k points I was told that it could be paid when the offer expires I believe that is the end of March but happy to be corrected (as usual :p).

I don't use the lounge programme as I have QF-WP and mostly fly One World. I was starting to review the value of my membership. I called them and discussed my plans to stop after being a Platinum charge card holder for the last 5 years and Amex member for over 20 years and they were keen to stop me from leaving. They credited my Membership Rewards programme with a nice number of points and promised to reduce my renewal fee when it comes up.

Got approved for my card the other day. :) Don't forget you need to spend $500 in the first two months to receive the 75,000 bonus points. They won't appear automatically. :)

Cheers,
- Febs.

One final Q before I sign up....After 1 year, what happens if I want to switch back to the Plat Credit Card only? Do you keep the same card number? and what happens to your points? do they get TF back to the standard Ascent program (as opposed to Premium Ascent)? thanks

No you would be given a new number. and from memory you would change back to Ascent, so you couldn't transfer to QF after the plat charge card was cancelled.

Unless you cancel altogether to sign up with an AMEX provider that has a Qantas direct earn option.

Got my card today. Pretty impressive list of Sydney restaurants with guaranteed tables. I was expecting Tets, Bilsons, Marque etc.. but didn't expect to see so many other (2, 1, and no hat) restaurants. Plenty of Merivale joints too, which is good because we visit them often. :)

With the "by invitation" program - how often realistically do invites come out? Do you have to ring up to give them a "profile" of the sorts of things you'd like to attend (e.g. wine tasting, shopping nights, sports events etc..), or is that based on spending patterns? Can't imagine they'd invite every Plat Charge card member to everything?

Cheers,

The new list came out a couple of months ago. originally it was only a couple of restaurants. There is a great selection there, especially Melbourne too..

You get the invites every few months. There will be about 3-5 different ones that come in together. I'd say they send them to most Plat cardmembers as they cap the number of guests so it's first in. Having said that i've not taken up any yet, nothing has appealed to me!

Thanks Nick, appreciate the quick response. Am I right in assuming the events are a mixture of free and paid? The examples in the brochure sounded like some would be free (VIP shopping night), whilst others wouldn't (Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine tasting dinner, AFL grand final experience etc..).

Correct on that, most tend to be paid events. the F1 was in the last one I got. A few get away type packages too. Note you can pay for them with points too.. 10,000 points = $100 (same as amex travel)

One good one recently that we were very tempted by was dinner with Rick Stein and a weekend at his restaurant in Molly Mook - $3500ish though...
