Hey Guys,
am planning to have a quick 4 day holiday in SP in Dec, fly out on 15th and head back on 19th! Planning to stay at QT Hotel (GCI International) anyone stayed here before? whats it like? planning to visit Movie world & Wet & Wild, still contemplating between VA & Jetstar! any other recommendations? To taxi it from OOL to Surfers or take a bus? My BF wants to visit Bris, would one day be enough to cover Bris CBD? or would we need to extend until the 20th dec? just wondering, would any car hire company let a 20 year old hire a car? :)

GCI was ok when I stayed there in 1999. Also when I was a member of the gym there in 1994. But that was a while ago. I'd you are doing a couple of parks look into multi park passes. A day should be enough for Brisbane CBD. Do you have something you particularly want to see, or just to wander around town? Well it shouldn't be too boring, you can check out southbank, the botanic gardens, even kangaroo point cliffs, go for a ride on the citycat and shopping of course. I'm not sure about getting to brisbane, but maybe the train is an option if you can't get a car. There should be a bus from SP to the train station.

I have travelled to the gold coast from Adelaide about 8-9 times. My last trip was last weekend (also drove to brisbane to watch the mighty power play the lions) Usually go 1-2 a year. From my experiences I can offer you this advice. Rental car: go with action-rent-a-car ( Action Rent A Car - Car Hire in Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast ) I have hired from them for the last 4 years (I am 23 years of age) and they (unlike big car rental companies) hire to younger people. Excess is high ($3000-4000) but I recommend getting domestic travel insurance (can range between $35-$50 for a short week long trip) cars always neat & tidy. I usually rent a Nissan tiida. Last week when I went up they didn't have any tiidas avail so I got a hyundai elantra which was also good and cost me $90 approx for the 2 1/2 days (+ $34 travel insurance to bring the $3/4k excess down to $0 from Online Travel Insurance Australia) Also I have heard QT is good but I would highly recommend (especially if you have a car) staying in Broadbeach, quieter, free on-street parking etc) in particular the Meriton. I have stayed in 5-6 hotels at the GC and the Meriton (Broadbeach, Gold Coast - Meriton Apartments Australia) is the best value for money by far, bar none! On a side note. For fancy pants food if you like steak you can't beat MooMoo ( Moo Moo ) at Broadbeach or for buffet try Waves at the Watermark in Surfers ( Waves Restaurant voted Best Buffet serving Indian | Mediterranean | Seafood | Asian | French inspired Desserts ) Oh and you can cover Brissy CBD in a day quick and easy 40-50min drive from GC. Hope this helps!

Thankyou MedHead & Neon_Crossing!! makes my decisions a lot easier! still doubting that i will get ahire car, just dont want to waste all of our money on transport lol

Just did a trip to the Gold Coast a few months ago, things to watch out for - credit card surcharges everywhere you turn - and not the usual 1.9% but often 3+% - even for Visa as well as Amex. Public Holidays - play havoc with plans - a lot of places closing early or not opening at all on public holidays. Food prices often surprisingly high - even from the budget places up to fancy eateries, and last but not least - traffic which is often worse than even Sydney or Melbourne if you are caught out at the wrong place/time. Get to Wet'n'Wild early if you can.....

Each time I've gone I've had a car, the Gold Coast is relatively car friendly, I've always been able to find parking spots near where I wanted to get to.

The Movieworld \ Wet'n'wild and Dreamworld are prob about 30 minutes drive away from surfers (as a guess, I don't remember exactly). Most hotels have some sort of shuttle bus and I do believe there are normal busses out there as well.

There are car companies out there who will hire to under 25's. They are usually older cars. Be very careful to check the car over prior to accepting it otherwise you may find that little pre-exising scratch (which all older cars have) becomes a big issue when you return it. If you do find one of the majors which will hire you a car be prepared that there could be a massive excess on your insurance. Check out domestic travel insurance, it covers car hire insurance excess.

There is a train to brissy, but there are no stations in surfers. I do believe the nearest one is in Robina (Not sure, check the train timetable). Of course you'd need to get yourself out to Robina first.

Well, I live on the Gold Coast. I know little about Surfers and it's inner workings, like most other residents of the cost, I avoid it.

However, I'm happy to answer any specific questions. I'm sure I'll have some sort local advice.

Never stayed here, although I know it quite well, the GCI is starting to show it's age. It'll probably be looking to get a makeover in the next 2-5 years. What is your reason for staying there? We have a couple of brand new hotels, have you considered looking into the Mantra?

fly out on 15th and head back on 19th! planning to visit Movie world & Wet & Wild

This is the busiest time of the year for wet and wild. Just bear that in mind. Movie World will be busy too. But since it's the Christmas holidays, everybody flocks to Wet n Wild.

Can I make a suggestion?

Wet n Wild have 'Dive in Movie' nights. Basically, the theme park stays open (and the majority of rides too), and shows a movie on a large screen at the main pool (Wave pool), there are usually very little queues for the rides, and it is still very warm.

Since Movie World and Wet n Wild are right next door to each other, you could do movie world in the morning, and then when the park closes (5pm I think?) you can head over to Wet n Wild and go on all the rides, or watch the movie if you prefer. You'll usually find there is a discount if you come after 5pm just for the Dive in Movie. (Most of the rides are still open.) The park usually stays open until 9pm ish.

It is a fair distance from surfers to the theme parks, so doing both in one day (and one night) will save a lot of time & money. (And you can beat the queues!)

You could easily do it in a day. Go to the Science Museum and Arts Centre if you want to do something fun. Not sure if the GOMA exhibition will still on, some of our friends up at Brisbane might know. But yeah, Brisbane in one day isn't a problem. It's about an hour drive from Surfers to Brisbane.

To taxi it from OOL to Surfers or take a bus? ........would any car hire company let a 20 year old hire a car?

Get a car. It will end up being cheaper than the taxi fare to/from the airport. It'll end up being much more useful than public transport on the coast as well. The traffic will be bad in the morning, and around 4pm. But it's much more efficient to get car. Just be careful with parking in Brisbane, make sure you get a parking ticket.

You shouldn't have a problem with getting a car if you are 20. Just look out for insurance.

still contemplating between VA & Jetstar! any other recommendations?

If they are the same price? Pick Virgin. Where are you flying in from? Virgin flights to/from Sydney have a bad habit of being delayed.

Enjoy your time on the Gold Coast, the beaches are beautiful, and Gold Coast people are very active always at the beach or going for a run, I'm sure you'll have a nice time.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

thanks for the input guys! my bf is 23 but hasn't got his full license yet! (am pushing him :)), was thinking of hiring it under his name then ill be driving hehe, we are flying from Melb, and im swaying to VA's side, was planning to grab the VIP 3 park pass, but will think about hitting W&W & MW in one day! i chose QT because the website and reviews are pretty good, sounds nice and classy for a couple of days :) Any reviews on dreamworld & their water park guys?

You may have issues with a car given your age, public transport is not a bad alternative, certainly no issue with getting to the parks etc or even Brisbane, you can plan the trips here:

If you aren't the person named in the car rental agreement and you are driving and have an accident I am pretty sure you will not be covered by any insurance at all. Id give the company I mentioned earlier a call, I rented a car from them when I was 19 and on my P plates, and it was fine.

Dreamworld & WhiteWater World are great value with a world pass where you can actually skip between both parks freely during the day or over a couple of days, which is good because you can go on some rides, go for a swim then head back into the park to other things, gives you more options and the waterpark isnt as big as wet & wild but it is just as good.
