Sounds like a great trip.... I think you'll need some help from the real RTW experts though!
You might have to add a few separate side trips on to a more "normal" RTW ticket methinks!
I CAN help (a bit) with the "train across the country to Vegas" bit...
Doable - but LOOOONG... Departing Washington it's 17 hours 40 on the Capitol Limited to Chicago, then 34 hours on the Southwest Chief to Kingman AZ... then a 3 hour bus ride to Vegas..
I'd REALLY want a sleeper for those long hauls...
Desert? I'd suggest AZ instead of NV.... Head south (vist Tombstone if that interests you at all) then on to Bisbee etc... the "Desert Museum" outside Phoenix is very good indeed....
Love that area myself! YMMV!
You could also travel by train to Southern AZ (Tucson) via St Loius... An even longer trip!
Its been a slog I can tell you
Actually its a cobbled together trip, we had looked at a RTW fare, but it did not seem to suit our travel style. Thats is we are rather insane
We are doing the gold coast to kuala lumpur with air asia (cattle class)
Kuala Lumpur to Seoul in Via Manila on Cebu - we have left plenty of hours for changeovers - and are well aware of the hit and miss service - although for AUS$100 a pop it was too cheap to pass up
We have two choices to get to Japan, a ferry called the Beetle - or a flight to Kyoto and then onto Sapporo - we may do business for this depending on what the damage is
The flight out of Tokyo is BA in club world (to London) - it better be good - it ate a lot of the travel budget.
Its still very sketchy in Europe, we flew into London as it was close to relatives. I suspect its off to the emeral Isle via a train/ferry and then a LCC flight to europe somewhere
when its all done its London-Iceland-New York with Icelandic Air. We did the economy comfort thing as it was not much more - I would love to do the Saga class and I think we will fork over for the longer flight if they offer it (maybe)
You are spot on with the route from Washington, looks like the sanest option is to go all the way to LA and backtrack slightly. We are going to get a superliner roomette. And watch the world go by.
The plan with the driving is to head up to the grand canyon/mese verde
Tombstone sounds interesting and we could even make a loop of it I suspect (check out the mexican border)
Lol I could type forever.. its .. um complicated
We still have to figure out how to get home to Australia, I am not terribly confident on getting a cheap jetstar flight though from Honolulu
We may take the easy option and do a cruise ship home to Australia (oh the pain!!)
Needless to say I have been slaving away researching
Did you know for example that Philippine Airlines flies from Las Vegas to Vancouver - fairly good fare when compared to Air Canada to
And I learnt if you want to fly from asia to china book it as a through trip ie Seoul-Shanghai-Hong Kong : seems to be much much cheaper
right im off to checkout the Tombstone thing
