Place name mispronunciation

Most yanks mispronounce Melbourne.
I also noticed during the last election, the suburb Lalor and electorate being pronounced two different ways. Lay-lor by locals and by politicans la-lor.

I also noticed yanks, even after being told how to properly pronounce a place, will just ignore the proper pronunciation and just keep saying it their way. Ask a yank how to pronounce Zadar!

I have been led to believe that the original pronunciation was vocalised as in "Law-ler".

Another one is the the pronunciation of castle in Newcastle, NSW and Castlemaine, VIC, which in local usage I believe are different.

Wondered what you were talking about in the OT thread.
But let us take Derby in WA.There are Derby's in many places.5 in the USA and I am sure they pronounce it differently to those in the west.Are they mispronouncing it?
Just for fun looked up a few others-20 Manchesters in the USA!.

After driving through Kilkivan and Goomeri for a few years to work in the north Burnett I finally stopped and found out I was way out in the way I pronounced the names.

The Melbourne suburb of Reservoir also catches non locals out. Re-se-voooooooooooorrrrrrrrr.

Pronounced Ma- Jinca -Bell .

And by the locals just, “Bell”.

Melbourne suburb of Laverton = "Lavver-t'n", WA goldfields town = "Laver-t'n" (as in Rod Laver)
Melbourne suburb Malvern = "Molv'n", Adelaide suburb Malvern = "Malv'n" (as in Mal Meninga) (I think, please correct if wrong)

There are others, but they escape me at the moment.

I don't think there is much doubt about the pronunciation of that wonderful NW Victorian town Tittybong! :shock:

Flying from CNS-SYD last week and the pilot said we were going to fly over More-RAN-bah (Moranbah). It's pronounced More-'n-bah / More-en-bah.

Nothing about towns, but was also once told off by my primary school teacher whwn I explained/talked about being in Norway and going by boat to/between fjords.

Pronounded F-yords, but he went off at me, saying I'm wrong and its F Jords!
