I have had a friend's small dog die in the hold of a plane. It was so traumatic. There is no way I will ever put my dog there.

The holds are air conditioned, and pressurised. Why did it die?

If you aren’t prepared to let your pet perish in case of emergency you probably shouldn’t be taking them onboard IMO

Generally not kept in cages under the seat in front, though perhaps an idea to be taken up in the future.

Interesting that we're equating pets to people. I wouldn't be allowing this for many reasons, but one is that the owners are guaranteed to drag the cage out and thus slow any evacuation.

Thats a fantastic point - I wonder if the instruction would be to leave them as is with bags, though we know how it would actually play out.

The instruction will be exactly that… the pet carrier - which is unlikely to be a hard ‘cage’ as everyone seems to suggest, but a soft-sided carrier akin to a pack back - is to be left on board during an evacuation.

In AU properly registered and extremely well trained guide dogs accompanying an equally "trained" blind "handler" are allowed by law provided all conditions are met.

I don't have a personal problem with the above, a rare occurrence anyway. But random pets with various DYKWIA owners on whim in the cabin vs the already existing hold arrangements - no!

so what happens if
1. there is someone with a dog next to me and I don't like it and then it does its business in its carrier and I really don't like it and nowhere to move too?
2. I vomit from the smell or get and asthma attack and need oxygen . Could easily happen to a pax.
