Hi,

I have a short round trip coming up in a few weeks SYD-BNE-SYD, I wondered if i'd be able to take my new puppy with me on Qantas (in a box in the hold)?
I have never flown with an accompanying pet before and wondered if anyone has before? Id been to hear your experiences and any advice you may have.

ps. Can I get my dog a FF number? ;)

Paul

I would also factor in how young the puppy is, and how they are likely to cope with both the flight itself (scary, dark etc, especially for a small puppy), and also whatever your plans whilst away are going to be (how much time will they spend cooped up etc).

No it's not free any more - you need to pay, certainly if you fly out of sydney or perth as you don't take the dog in to the terminal anymore. YOu also need to ensure you have an approved crate with metal fasteners now as well. (although they very kindly changed all the plastic fasteners on my dogs crate for me a few months back)

You will need to use the AAE express Pets service, which is free if part of your luggage allowance

The OP is talking about a puppy ex SYD to BNE, in this case it would be free (note you cannot fly a kitten or puppy under 8 weeks age), of course they could not check in any bags as the pet would be the 1 piece :

On Australian domestic flights from eligible airports*, pets which fit into a small or medium sized pet pack can be taken as part of your free baggage allowance , subject to the exceptions below.

* Pets are not permitted in the passenger terminals of the following airports either for departure or arrival: Adelaide, Alice Springs, Cairns, Canberra, Darwin, Gove, Hobart, Karratha, Perth, Port Hedland, Rockhampton and Townsville. All permitted pets in these airport terminals must be lodged at the Australian air Express freight terminal and you will be required to pay the applicable rate for the carriage of the pet. When pets are travelling to any of these destinations they must be collected from the freight terminal at the arrival destination.

no they've changed it in syd. my dog goes in a medium petpack and they won't accept it in sydney anymore.. i've tried arguing twice with them (with dog in hand) in the terminal, and also if you ring up qf to put pet on booking they tell you to ring AAE now.

Does it depend on your destination? Certainly to Perth would be a no go, but I thought to Brisbane would be ok.
