Hi all,

I hope this isn't too much of a basic question but from reading the various threads I understand that there are different types of aircraft that fly the Perth-Sydney route. Here's the situation, I need to fly to Sydney in a couple of months to attend an event sponsored by Qantas for which they are flying us over and back in business class and I need to let them know the day and flights that I want for Perth-Sydney then Sydney-Perth. My question is this, given the choice are there any flights that a better than others in terms of the business class experience? Ideally, I need to fly to Sydney on a Wednesday with a little flexibility (but need to be in Sydney for Thursday night) and return around 12 days later (the following weekend) after a short hop up to Bougainville. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Qantas use 747-300s for a few flights each day from Perth to Sydney, both ways.
The 747 flights have better seats and personal entertainmnent screens. Its the old international business class.
Just check on the Qantas website in the bookings section and it will tell you what type of aircraft it is. I avoid any 737s on the long flights.

Thanks Batesy, I hate the long flight (I get bored to easily) so any improvement in the IFE and comfort department is a winner for me, sounds like the 747 is the way to go.

I agree with Batesy. Your best choice would be one of the 747-300 flights. While they're not fitted with Skybed and AVOD, they still make for a comfortable flight.

Note that if your flight is after mid/end-October your only choice of aircraft (other than the 743) on PER-SYD-PER will be 737-400/800 or 767-300. It's a bit of a hit-and-miss as to whether you'd get an Internationally configured 763 (25J/204Y) so at least with the 747, you can be guaranteed IFE and Dreamtime seat (subject to no aircraft changes/substitutions).

747-300 all the way I say :D

Regards

Do they no longer use the Airbus A330-300s between PER and SYD?

They used to have several flights a week on these, and they have Skybeds in business class...

The A330-300's were typically used when there was some positioning requirements, such as for the Tokyo flights from Perth. These have changed to a 767. Sometimes they will do a SYD-PER-SYD flight, but this is not something that is too reliable.

Much safer to look for a 747-300, especially a few months out.

Thanks oz-mark, I note that on the day I am looking at returning they have the A330-200 marked for the flight. Is this a better aircraft than the 747 for the business class flight if given the choice?

TonyB, what date are you looking @ returning?

The J cabin of the 743 is 10x better than that of the 332.

No, take the 747-300 over the A330-200. The A330-300 is the one with international config and Skybeds seats and AVOD. The A330-200 is in domestic config with 2x3x2 across Millennium seats.

If you're flying after mid-to-late-October, it's very unlikely you will have the choice of the A330-200 (which is a good!) as they will go o/s for repaints and will then have an interior refurb in preparation for service with JQi. Note Qantas are very slow at updating their online schedules...

Your best bet would be to choose the 747-300!

Actually had a chat to a flight attendant mate over a beer the other night who advised the A330-200's will be around til QTR1 next year on various QF dom routes.JQ int get 2 to start with in NOV and the rest are moved across from from then on .QF will try to keep the A330-200 on PER for s long as poss ...they carry 300 and use a bucket less kero than 747s..
the A330s are basically geting a new coat of paint and leather seatcovers for JQ int thats it (the 330-200's are actually higher spec performance-range than the A330-300s)

Well, they are a smaller plane.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback, I really appreciate it. Looks like the 747 is the clear winner.

yes, the 747 is the clear winner. you should also see if you can get allocated a seat upstairs - much nicer flying experience.
